2023 Softball

Big Ten gets four into the NCAA Tournament

Indiana
Minnesota
Nebraska
Northwestern
I was disappointed only 4 teams got in. Maryland, Michigan, OSU and PSU all had RPI in the 40s. Was thinking at-least one of that group would get in.

I don't know, but it's possible some of those 4 were invited and declined. I'm guessing teams have to pay to play in the NISC (though you wouldn't think that would be a problem for OSU and UMich)

I believe we did or would have declined last year. So, very likely that those other teams declined this year, as they would have probably been invited before us.

That would seem likely, max scholarships are only 12 total (including partials), and we already have a larger-than-normal roster at 27 with only 3 graduations (at this time).
With 9 freshman in the 2023 class, you'd certainly think more exits are on the way.

Don't know about Vasquez. We're up 4-0 over the Terps, bottom of 6; if we hang on we face BYU in a one game championship right after this game, even though both teams would be 3-0.

A great way to end the season. In former Hawkeye news Sarah Lehman pitched 4 no hit innings to start the game for San Diego State as they advanced to the regional final in Los Angeles. They play later today.

What an exciting game for the softball team to win the NISC. They were down three runs in the top of the seventh. Not only that down to the last out, two strikes (twice). They came back to win. A really crazy game. Happy for the softball team!!!!! They deserved the victory but things just had to break their way.

Denali Loecker is in the transfer portal. I didn't see her entering the portal. I believe she has one year left of eligibility.

So far between using their 5th year and new portal entries it looks like there are 6 leaving. Anyone missing? I would have thought there would be more with a roster of 27.

Denali Loecker
Emma Henderson
Anna Henderson
Kalena Burns
Nia Carter
Kat Serna

Bree V has used her eligibility so she will not be back. I had not seen anything about Serna transferring but it makes sense as she did not get a lot of playing time. I would assume there will be others transfer or stop playing.

I think Nia got some B1G honor and I think led the team in hitting or something. And Loecker pitched ok and also hit ok. So they will be missed I think. Too bad Hawks can't keep those 2.

Two great kids. They will both definitely be missed. Will be interesting to see where they land...

Thanks for sharing the Twitter page, SunsOut. It looks like Mya Dodge from UNI is in the portal. She hit .396 with 17HR and is from Cedar Rapids. I hope Coach G will take a look. It's crazy the number of players in the portal.

Jada Cecil from UC San Diego is in the portal. Big West pitcher and freshman of the year. Was on the Top Ten freshman of the year list. Might be someone to keep an eye on. Coach Gardner was at UCSD last year and I would assume played a role in recruiting her. Hoping we take a look.

Indiana's Taryn Kern, one of the nations top freshman, is in the portal. Doubt if we'd be in contention, but will be a big loss to IU.
