**************2024 All Class High School Football Thread***************

Waukee Northwest last night, didn't go but heard it from my house a couple blocks away. Watched the second half on YouTube (which has surprisingly good coverage). Waukee's QB was just too much as a runner. Northwest hit some long passes which was kind of surprising given the unorthodox throwing motion of their QB. Overall a good rivalry match.

Checking in from western Iowa. As expected, Tri-Center pummeled West Monona 56-6. Didn’t learn much as the game was 28-0 after the 1st quarter. I have to wonder if WM could fall to 8 man at some point. TC travels to Westwood (Sloan) on Friday. Westwood appears to be better than West Monona, but not by much. Woodbury Central buried them 2 weeks ago 41-0. District 8 ahould come down to the TC vs WC matchup in week 7.

Logan-Magnolia is toast this season. Started out in the top 10 rankings based on last season. They are already 0-2 in the district.

3-0 ACGC looks legit and has a tough matchup vs 2-1 Riverside this week.

In Class 1A, Underwood bounced back after starting 0-2. AHSTW lost a tough game against 2A Carroll Kuemper. Heard Avoca lost their senior, starting QB last week with a broken collarbone, but seem ok as long as they keep giving Sternberg the ball. 1A District 8 will come down to Underwood and AHSTW. Treynor likely 3rd.

Y'all. I may have just gone to one of the best high school football games I've ever seen. Big plays. Good athletes. Fantastic/ weird ending.

Cedar Falls at Liberty

Liberty and CF traded scores all night. CF stopped on the first possession going on 4th. Liberty only stopped with possession at half. Was that way all 3rd quarter and then it went bananas.

Liberty took the lead on a one handed catch from about 50 yards.

CF took the ball straight down but Liberty's corner made a FANTASTIC defensive play on a 1v1 fade route, turned at the right time after being on the wr's hip and got a pick.

Liberty then went up 42-28 with 2:55 to go on a long 61 (I think) yard TD.

CF drove straight down after a long timeout for an injury and scored to make it 42-35 with 2:22 left.

Liberty just needs to recover the onside kick... and they didn't. CF ball again and scored almost immediately to tie the game with 1:41 on a 3rd and 2.

Liberty, used timeouts to stop the clock on the possession giving them time. Liberty's QB took over after that point. Had a few short throws that ended in big plays by he took 2 broken plays and scrambled for huge yards. Scored with 20 seconds left to take the lead 49-42.

CF returned the kick to the Liberty 48 with 11 seconds left. Incomplete on 1st, short completion with 1 second left on the 40 to get a Hail Mary shot.

Was sacked by a 3 man rush.

Lightning Jacks for everyone!

Easily the biggest win in school history!

City and West ended... interestingly? As well.

City took the lead by 1 very late in the game. Proceeded to get an unsportsmanlike (no shocker there) and kicked deep in their own territory with little time left. West had a huge return, got the ball to the 2 yardline and then missed the field goal... but don't worry, City got more unsportsmanlike penalties after the game.

CF v Liberty sounded ridiculous. Would have been nuts had CF pulled that game out.

It absolutely was. Had CF won, it would have taken away probably the best win in Liberty's young history. Plus, like myself, there's a ton of Cedar Falls grads living in North Liberty that have fully switched our allegiance to the Bolts :)

I go in the wrestling thread sometimes and ask why they have all landed on iowa preps high school wrestling forum to discuss politics and just get attacked in there lol
I went in there for wrestling and was shocked. It's a bunch of SEC castoffs that got booted for being far right whackos politically. I still love going in there occasionally to lift the rock on those roaches.

Anyway, really intrigued by a matchup of two irrelevant rivals: CR Wash and CR Jeff. Washington has a new coach in Eric Addy who seems pretty good. The Warriors look better than they have in a few years. Ed Miles has Jefferson off to another 4-0 start after a fairly weak schedule, but their QB just broke the school record for passing yards in a game and they have a legit D1 caliber receiver. Wash exposed Jeff's weaknesses at this time last year, but both are better. Intrigued enough that I'll make the short drive to watch it next weekend.

I dunno if Ankeny is any good, but nice to see Johnston whip them up. Dragons had a couple rough weeks.

How does one do that?
whose line is it anyway wl GIF

Liberty is now up to #2 in the RPI (which is very flawed and we are not #2) but did beat #12 Ankeny tonight. Missed a field goal that would have easily sealed it but had to settle for a pick in the endzone to hold on. Liberty's offense, when healthy, is almost unstoppable. The defense is young, especially in the secondary, and still developing. Just not quite where it needs to be yet. Leads to lots of close, high scoring, entertaining games.

Liberty seals the group and will be in the playoffs at 6-1. The great season continues! Go Bolts!

For all you 8-man football fans that don't exist, I have drafted a mock playoff picture for the 1st Rd matchups as we enter the final week of the regular season for the 8-man class (don't worry, I get paid for this anyway, for those wondering if I have too much time on my hands.........):

Class 8-Man State Playoffs 1st Rd Mock Pairings (entering Week 8)-
(D1s vs At-Large)
Audubon vs Ar-We-Va
Don Bosco, Gilbertville vs Tripoli

(D1s vs D3s)
Remsen-St. Mary's vs West Bend-Mallard
Bishop Garrigan, Algona vs Boyer Valley
Gladbrook-Reinbeck vs Collins-Maxwell
Lenox vs East Mills
Iowa Valley, Marengo vs Springville
Edgewood-Colesburg vs Clarksville
Fremont-Mills, Tabor vs Southeast Warren
Montezuma vs Winfield-Mount Union

(D2s vs D3s)
Central City vs B-G-M
Janesville vs Kee, Lansing

(D2s vs D2s)
Belle Plaine vs WACO, Wayland
Woodbine vs Bedford
St. Edmond, Fort Dodge vs CAM, Anita
GTRA vs Riceville

About the Des Moines domination, it's really about just the 5A schools; the other classes are much more balanced. Really bad news and bad luck for 3A Algona to lose their star quarterback and ISU recruit with a serious injury. Probably the best quarterback in the state. 3A Dubuque Wahlert has three close relatives of Iowa and Iowa State starters (who were all NFL players) in their starting lineup this year: quarterback Drew Reilly is the grandson of Iowa all-American and Minnesota Vikings linebacker Mike Reilly (he's also the nephew of Iowa linebacker and defensive captain Jim Reilly), Tackle Carter Brant is the nephew of three year Iowa State starter and pro player Aaron Brant; and wide receiver Brody Schumacher is the nephew of Riley McCarron, Iowa's leading receiver his senior year and former New England Patriots player. 3A is so strong and balanced that any one of about twelve teams could go on to win the state title, in my opinion, with Williamsburg, Sergeant Bluff Luten and Wahlert the favorites.. And to answer a question from above, yes Mount Vernon has a very good team, and is in my top dozen 3A teams..

Honest question... why did Jeff not play Ankeny? They are in the same district but not on the schedule.

Jeff's schedule is terribly easy but that's not the point. They were litetally one of the worst programs in the state just a few years ago.
I think there IS some rotation system based on geographical distance. I know assistant coaches with both Jeff and their next opponent, Liberty. I’ll ask.

I can as well. I just thought the whole purpose of a group was to have all teams play each other and have an automatic qualifier that way.

That group was:
1 seed Ankeny (doesn't play # 6 Jeff)
2 seed Prairie (doesn't play #5 Wash)
3 seed IC West (plays all)
*4 seed Liberty (plays all)
5 seed CR Wash (doesn't play #2 Wash)
6 seed CR Jeff (doesn't play #1 Ankeny)

*already won group (of course I had to get that in there, proud of our kids)

So I get what they did in allowing the top and bottom teams to play an extra game suited to their program's level but that ultimately hurts those teams in the RPI even having a better record. Plus the state already aligned a game with a team the same seed (ex- Liberty vs Waterloo West was set up by the state). So that's 6 games determined by the state out of 9 games for the middle two teams and 5 games determined by the state for the top and bottom 2. I guess the only thing I can think of is that the Liberty vs West game wasn't actually assigned but they were always going to play since it is a rivalry game?

Either way, it just seems odd to have group champs that auto qualify that may not play every team in the group.

CCA wins at #4 Xavier to keep our playoff hopes, and a chance to tie for the District Championship, alive. 28-24.
💙🤍💙
It was a tough Friday for some of 4A's perennial powers as Ol' Doodle's alma mater also lost in upset fashion to Norwalk and let the District 6 title slip through their fingers.

Makes the playoff road a little tougher potentially, but in the end, Iowa HS seasons are defined by getting to the dome...not by district championships.

Come what may be, you will all see, Titans in the fight.

I hear ya, but you have to walk before you can run and CCA has never been able to crawl. After starting the season 1-2, they've peeled off 4 of their last 5 with two top 10 wins. Earning a tie in Districts with North Scott and Xavier would be quite the accomplishment in Coach Pedersen's first year.

With only one loss for each the JV and FR, and a few sophomores playing key roles for the varsity, it looks like things are headed in the right direction in Tiffin, Iowa.

Doodle, may I ask what year you graduated from LC

Little younger than you, sis graduated’90 I did in ‘94. Would’ve graduated with the youngest Coyle but they ended up moving to Colorado good basket ball players
Grew up next door to Rich Stockton. Good friend of mine growing up had an older sister that dated and still married to Mike Noble. Guy was a beast when I was young.

Mason City, Newman (4-4) at Nashua-Plainfield (5-3)
Sibley-Ocheyedan (5-3) at Woodbury Central (6-2)

starting with the mess that is the 8-P pairings:
I haven't followed HS football in years and know even less of the 8-man pairing structure.

Can you briefly explain the criteria?

It seems bizarre 2 teams with losing records get at-large bids but 2 teams with winning records do not.

Also looking through the pairings and digging into schedules a bit, it seems Bedford got screwed. Losing 1 game to the #1 team in the class and gets rewarded with a 3 hour road trip?

On the flip side of that, Belle Plaine went 3-1 vs playoff teams and draws a top 10 opponent?

Looking at box scores, it seems talent at this level is wildly disparate. I see the 17 point differential thing, but is that the only criteria to determine strength of schedule?
