Yes, it's beating a dead horse. But this horse needs beaten until KF realizes and fixes the problem or changes are made at the top.

Iowa's 2024 passing yardage totaled 1580 yards (131.7 y/g). They managed 9TD - 7 INT, which puts it on par with Navy with their 1410 yards and 13TD - 6 INT, with one game to play.

Indiana has a Top 5 passing offense.
UNLV's Go-Go offense comes in Top 20.
Even Iowa State has a Top 50 passing offense.

KF needs to make the move to 3.0.
Evolve the passing offense to something functional & modern.
There are plenty of ways to protect the football and still threaten the secondary.

It's the only way forward.
Get the job done KF.
Clock's ticking.

Well of course, but thats why Brian is gone, and the cupboard was completely bare when Lester arrived this spring. Let's give him a year or 2 to see what he can do. It starts at QB.

It's not the player(s). It's the schemes. The concepts.

When Charlie Jones can go from 323 yards receiving at Iowa to 1300+ yards at Purdue, there are only a couple conclusions that can be drawn.

1) Iowa is not good at identifying talented players at the WR position. -OR- 2) Iowa is not good at utilizing the talent that they have in the passing game.

Losing VanderZee really hurt us and losing several TE's for muliple games exaserbated the problem. Being down to a fourth string QB was the final straw. One complaint about Lester, he isn't throwing down the seam to our TE's. Should be open the way teams are loading the box and bringing safeties up.

You have to take shots when the defense rolls up the safeties.
The TE seam routes are a higher risk throw, but throwing the route will keep those safeties honest and open up space outside.
The screen game gets the ball on the edge after clearing out the secondary -- and forces LBs and DBs to tackle in space.
The 'echo' routes also clear space, and then run a second receiver into that space. They are also underutilized.

I'm not suggesting that we need to throw 15 yard in-breakers. Just vary the offense and utilize working into spaces that the defense creates with their alignment and pressures.

You need a QB that can throw the deep ball, and that requires time to throw that ball. This isn't as simple as drawing up a bomb. The Oline needs to improve, and then the QB needs to have an arm.

In Lester’s defense he was stuck with a qb that budmyer and Brian brought in that wasn’t mobile and missed a lot of makeable throws. Not sure what coach got Gill but kudos to them as Cade and brown massive failures as our offensive NIL additions. Flip side how great was Jackson replacing Jacobs at LB.

Hopefully Kirk lets Lester go out and look for a qb in the portal. I know I’m beating a dead horse but Brian and budmyer brought in deacon as a backup after May left. Lester gets Sullivan and even Stratton that look like Tom Brady compared to deacon.

It's mostly NOT about deep shots, though they have a purpose (especially on 2nd and 1). With the way NEB's safeties were within 10 yards of LOS -- we could've easily taken a 3 step drop and thrown a post or floated one down the seam.

No doubt many of the OL lack the lateral agility to protect well on a full drop, but a good dose of screens and drag routes would give them something to think about.

i think Lester will help this over time. just not sure how quickly this can be fixed. we return 5 wideouts that could not get open no matter who played qb this yr. TE injuries were a prob, but they were not open much either when healthy. This is against loaded boxes because of our NFL tailback. what happens next yr when teams can actually not load the box to stop the run? hopefully Lester can address this in the portal.

Chicken or the Egg. Are the athletes at WR not good enough to get targets. Or is the scheme poor enough that the athletes aren't in good positions to make plays.

If the aim is to be unpredictable, then our guys should see it as a slap in the face every time a team loads the box.

Kind of looking forward to see how good Shaggy can be if he practices full time with the 1s and has a full practice season under his belt

I said it before the season and it's borne out over its course. The O will be better AND they will still be bad. Both are true.
There was virtually no chance they were going from next to last into the top 20. Or even top 50. If Lester gets the passing O to somewhere around 75 next season that would be an accomplishment.

I'll say this. Lester took essentially the same personnel and finished about 30 places higher than Brian. Kudos to him
And the main pt is the scoring has about doubled which is the main thing; Score more than the other guy and you get to win. The defense basically had about 5-6 bad qtrs of football; 2nd half against ISU, 1st qtr of Minny; first half of MSU and a couple 2nd half drives; 2nd qtr at Ucla. Ucla scored 3 pts in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th qtrs and we lost.

107th ranked is a decent improvement; I was hoping for about 90th but I didnt see Kaleb Brown, the returning best WR, being totally non-productive; Lachey and Ostrenga missing about 8 games between them; Cade barely functioning and being down to our 4th string qb.

The scoring improved by around 80-100% so that stat is great.

I will take the improvement. Now we need to improve to 80th at least next year and avg 35 pts a game rather than 28

Don't care. We saw how important stats are yesterday. Stats are overrated. Clearly. Just win.

That's certainly the short view. I'm sure that we'd agree that to play meaningful January games in the future improvements are needed, mainly on offense.

If KF will not modernize the passing game he needs to go, their is a reason against any ranked team Iowa gets smoked, you cant expect the running game to win you games always, you have to have some balance and be able to pass . Before the qbs got hurt the passing game was garbage.
