21 offensive rebounds, just 7 turnovers, and we still lose

Its so tough when we have 2 defensive liabilities (Garza, JBo) in the game at the same time. The other 3 are constantly having to help out. We can get away with 1 liability in the game (Garza) but not 2 at the same time. And as a 3rd, I really don't see what Connor is bringing right now either.

Connor very smart role player....but he is 10-15 mpg talent because it is 4 on 5 on offense

JBo shooting the way he has so far this season is playing 4 on 5 on defense without him
making enough shots to cover up for his defense.

Take away Nunge's 3pt greenlight.

Play Keegan and JoeT big minutes. Play some man defense.

Iowa destroyed them on the boards 55 to 38 tonight. Unfortunately we couldn't hit shots again and the defense failed to pick up the hot shooter.

Jordan was great at times over the years but he has been a net liability in all games save one this year. I don't understand why Joe T and Keegan aren't getting more minutes at this point. Joe T breaks down the opponent's defense and is the only threat to drive to the rim. He is completely disruptive on defense. At this point the only thing that JB really does better is free throws and he doesn't shoot enough of those for it to matter that much. Keegan has shown himself to be a better all-around defender, rebounder, scorer than either Nunge, Patrick, or Connor. He has shown a skillset that can be effective at the 3 or the 4. When he and JT have been on the court at the same time there has been a chemistry.

In the last 5 games Connor and JB are averaging LESS than 10 points per game COMBINED with the most being 11. I don't think winning teams can afford to play 2 starting guards that average less than 10 points combined. Iowa is just not that hard to defend right now.

Dude is really zoned in on JT. He is going to be on his death bed like why didn't JT make all of his free throws against Minnesota.
Another question: why did every player who attempted 3+ shots not named CJ Fredrick shoot way under 50% from the field? Our offense was awful in the first half, as was our defensive rebounding. Tough watch, and I’m bummed the Hawks didn’t come out hotter than they did... especially on Christmas

Noticed that too. Only answer I have is that is basketball. 37 and 33 is not going to do it.

Garza will never miss that many shots this season, period.

Keegan needs to play more, have to play for what we want to look like in tourney and we might take a few lumps in near term. But guy is a gamer, let him play.

Toussaint is an amazing talent but he scares the hell out of me with the ball in his hands. We have to roll with him because of his quickness and defense. I can live with some mistakes but he has to improve his "quarterbacking" of the offense

What happened to Weezy?

Nunge needs to play more but my goodness, stop launching those 3 balls. He is skilled around the bucket and can block shots and rebound.

JoBo when he is not hitting jumpers brings minimal value. Ugh.

Time to Move on to next game. Very frustrating.

Just an off night for Weezy. He has been on recently.

Lol. You could say "None of it matters if Bohannon doesn't miss the shot at the end of regulation!"
JT is standing on the free throw lane and no one guarding him. Bohannon is half court with a man all over him...I'll blame this one on JT and I'm sure he would also....

None of it matters if JoeT makes 1 of 2 fts with 10 secs left. Thats the story of the game.
JoeT played 17 mins and provided a spark and still was 5-8 from line with those misses. Shit defense and not picking up the hot shooter and allowing them 45 second half points and NINETEEN in OT is the story of the game and the story of Fran's career at Iowa. He's an embarrassment the way he coaches D

Ouch. Nothing is ever apparent until it's put in writing.

Hawkisoaker, Serious question for those follow this logic (and there are a few more besides soaker).

At what point is it not the fault of the last player to miss 1-2 free throws while nursing a small lead? If Joe T had done the same thing but there was 30 seconds left in the game does the fault still fall on him all other things the same? How about 40 seconds?

Not trying to bash your logic although you know I don’t agree with it.

Nail on head.

Im afraid this team isn't going to be all it could because Fran will not be able to bring himself to sit these two for most of the game.

That's a pretty easy answer. Nunge and Connor are shooting 15% and 22% respectively from 3 this year. Jbo is shooting 27%. Weiskamp and Murray are shooting 42% but Murray only played a total of 9 minutes in the game and didn't shoot any. The only guy not named Fredrick that shoots close 50% from 3 on the season is Garza at 53% and other teams have figured that out so he's having to work at getting those. Overall the team shot 33% for the game and is only shooting 36% on the season and only exceeded 40% twice. They shot 36% against Purdue and 18% against Gonzaga. You're making it sound like this was some crazy sort of an anomaly when it was pretty much the norm. Rebounding was fine. The Hawks crushed them on the boards.

It was a rhetorical question directed at the guy who thinks Iowa only lost because of Toussaint’s missed free throw... but thanks

And rebounding turned out alright, but we got killed on the offensive glass in the first half

I agree that blaming the loss on 2 missed free throws is ridiculous. I'd call a 55-38 advantage on the boards more than alright. I'd call it dominant.

If you want to be high on Iowa’s rebounding when many came off of our own missed high percentage shots (layups and bunnies) then go ahead. Teams who actually dominate the rebounding battle typically win the game, especially when they also win the turnover battle, as Iowa did. However, Iowa lost by seven which is a big red flag in regards to your theory

Both JoeT and CJ missed free throws down the stretch to open the door, but they had a lot to do with why the Hawks came back to take the lead, especially CJ. Fran needed to find someone who could slow down Johnson, once he got on a roll from 3. I wonder if Keegan is up to that task for guys going off who are 3s or 4s. His daddy certainly had that ability.

It really is unusual to get 17 more rebounds and have only 7 turnovers, but lose. 3s are the great equalizer, and you must make free throws at crunch time.

53-35 = domination. No theory necessary.

39 39 38 34, and 28 minutes for the starters. We have a much deeper bench than last year. We didn't really use it well or enough. Check out the minutes played in the Purdue game. If you want help from your bench you have to let guys that put up numbers to get into the flow of the game. Then you can have fresher legs at the end of the game. But credit Minnesota for really tough defense, and getting red hot at the right time at home. This is the big 10, and every team can play defense and get hot, especially at home. Like everyone has been saying all year, the Big 10 is going to be a meat grinder. Plenty of things to learn from this game, hopefully they will and move on.
