231-192: House passes legislation providing $28 million in emergency spending to the FDA to address the baby formula shortage

I have a hard time believing lack of $$$ is why the FDA F’d up.

They need more $$$ to allow imports?
I believe that money might help with chartering transports.
So, to be clear: Why did Biden let these private companies screw up, why didn’t Biden fix the screw up faster, and I don’t like how Biden is fixing this not his screw up?

Doesn’t seem to be the case. Sounds like the money is just to support more hiring at FDA. Or maybe funding overtime for FDA inspectors?

AP: House Dems Propose $28 Million To Address Formula ShortageHouse Democrats unveiled a $28 million emergency spending bill Tuesday to address the shortage of infant formula in the United States. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the Democratic chair of the House Appropriations Committee, said the money would increase Food and Drug Administration staffing to boost inspections of domestic and international suppliers, prevent fraudulent products from getting onto store shelves and acquire better data on the marketplace.

I think the problem was multi-faceted.

Production concentrated in just a few companies. One goes down (Abbott) and we're totally screwed.

Domestic friendly regulations as benign as labeling limiting imports from European and other countries. Have a real hard time believing Europe isn't providing safe baby formula when their infant mortality rates are lower than ours.

Government inertia....this problem has been known about for months...should have expedited getting Abbott back on line...should have cleared the way for imports.

Some of these safety regulations were probably pushed by domestic producers to limit import competition because of "safety". Remember reading a while back there's pretty much a revolving door with FDA officials getting private industry jobs. Grease domestic producer wheels while in the FDA...get out and get a sweet gig with one of these companies.

Bacteria contamination in production facilities like that can get so bad that entire building get razed. Prevention is the most effective way to combat widespread food illnesses.

Does anyone know if there was a drawing down of the number of inspectors prior to this?

Too few companies is the primary reason. It's also why we have other distribution problems ongoing now.

It's long past time to start enforcing the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. These large companies can simply put a gun to our head and say, this is what it's going to cost.

Our free market economy is not working because we have not allowed enough participants (producers). The ones we have then pay Congress to limit the size of the playing field.

I don't think FDA rules that place undue hurdles on imports helped anything either...they basically facilitate these monopolies...

Atleast the shit we are talking about passing is in the millions and not billions like usual, that's a start.

Now change the rules, due to the extreme circumstances of a pandemic, and stop the government from buying the product to hand to illegals at the border. Might slow dow the rush if they here there isn't food waiting for them.

Given the choice between raising taxes on the rich to pay for saving children's lives or doing nothing, you can bet your house on the Rs to not only do nothing but to blame the Dems for what they refuse to fix.

This is the party a majority of Americans will vote to take over Congress this fall.

Just how awful are we?

Awfully stupid.

To save what's good about America we may have to split up America.

Where would you want to live?

So…..the solution to the current baby formula shortage is to hire more government workers in the future? Makes sense.

Maybe less red tape would do just as well?

Please.

Many of our problems - not just this baby formula issue - stem from under-funding and under-staffing the agencies that keep them safe and functioning in accordance with our agreed priorities.

When they blow up in our face, it makes sense to reverse that neglect.

Unfortunately, Rs actually prefer to inflict neglect - because their big money donors prefer to operate with minimal scrutiny.

Wait. Maybe we are not thinking this thing thru. If we drop regulations and oversight the coming abortion ban could be sidestepped.

And when understaffed government can’t juggle all the balls, they can point to government failures and say “look how bad the government is at X.”

Then raise more money on reducing government even more and letting the free market handle everything.

Which is how this problem started in the first place.

The issue is so much market share wrapped up in just a few companies. You could apply that to so many areas of the American economy.

JD Scholten constantly raises this issue (granted he’ll never win in NW Iowa). He’s been particularly critical of Grassley (rightly so) of supporting corporate meat packing and corporate dairy that has crushed a lot of small farms.

This is a pox on both the repubs and dems house. The capitulation by the government to corporations concerning monopoly laws and the globalization policy by both repubs and dems brought this mess to where we are today.

192 Republicans vote against because of course they did.

Did you read the bill? ALL it says is that $28 million will be available to the FDA until Sept 2023. That's it. WTF are you cheering about? The lame ass administration could have been working to alleviate the situation since October but hasn't until now. And just making some money available to a government agency is your big plan to applaud?

Other countries manage with fewer regulations. But I guess that is too difficult for the U.S.

All Hail the Federal Government!
