Over the weekend, there were 26 shootings in Chicago, resulting in five fatalities.

One incident involved a confrontation between a Walgreens employee and an armed man who entered the store.

The employee suffered a graze wound to the chest, while the alleged offender sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is in critical condition.

The previous weekend saw 21 shootings, with three fatalities, in Chicago under Mayor Johnson’s leadership.

The city has enacted some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but it has also struggled to reduce gun violence.

In 1982, Chicago became the first major city in the United States to ban handguns. The ban was challenged in court, but it was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1994. However, the ban was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2010.

Despite the lack of a handgun ban, Chicago still has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Residents must obtain a Firearms Owner’s Identification (FOID) card to purchase or possess a gun, and they must also obtain a separate permit to purchase a handgun. The city also has a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

However, Chicago also has a high rate of gun violence. In 2022, there were over 800 homicides in the city, and more than half of those homicides involved guns.
