3.44M Viewers for All Star Game(most for WNBA game or event in 27yrs); 2.3M:Jun23 Fever@Sky(most in 23 yrs); 2.25M: Jun16 Sky@Fever; 2.45M: WNBA Draft

I
Still surprising that the WNBA Draft drew more viewers than any game the league has played in 23 years, that's kind of sad albeit not surprising coming so soon after the Final Four. Wonder if Sunday on ESPN will actually beat it since the game is a bit later in the afternoon than the previous 11 AM Sky-Fever games? Should beat the current ESPN record anyway. I wonder what the peak possible audience would even be. Is 3 million the absolute most they could ever hope for? 5 million under the most perfect of circumstances?
The way these numbers are going and all the storylines, I think over 3 million today. Hopefully Fever get the win and Caitlin has a big game.

What sucks is whenever Angel is involved (the draft or a game), because she takes partial credit for the numbers when she knows damn well that it is Caitlin who is driving viewership.

Magic is giving too much credit to Angel, imo. Angel is not selling out arenas when Caitlin/the Fever is not the opponent.

The full text of Magic's tweet:

Larry and I heightened the NBA’s overall popularity. The Lakers and Celtics sold out arenas throughout the league and increased television viewership exponentially. The higher viewership numbers led to the NBA signing significantly larger TV contracts which then led to higher salaries for the players.

Caitlin and Angel are now doing the same thing, selling out arenas and increasing the viewership. They have taken women’s basketball by storm and with expiring TV deals on the horizon, the WNBA is now in a position to negotiate higher TV contracts and increase salaries for all of the talented players.

Thought the game might sniff 3 million, which would get to # 4 all time. 2.3 million is still outside the all-time WNBA top 10.

Going back 16 years: no other WNBA telecast, including the playoffs and finals, had managed even one million viewers since 2008.

The numbers Cailin has been putting up since the April 15 WNBA Draft:

June 23, 2024 Indiana at Chicago Game (2.3M Viewers on ESPN):

June 16, 2024 Chicago at Indiana Game (2.252M Viewers on CBS):

2024 WNBA Draft (Mon, Apr 15, 2024 on ESPN):

Another Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese matchup sets another viewership high for WNBA

by Jon Lewis
June 25, 2024

For the second-straight week, a nationally televised matchup of Caitlin Clark’s Fever and Angel Reese’s Sky delivered the top WNBA audience in 23 years.

Sunday June 23rd’s Fever-Sky WNBA regular season game, the third meeting of the season between Indiana’s Caitlin Clark and Chicago’s Angel Reese, averaged 2.30 million viewers on ESPN — surpassing the teams’ meeting on CBS the prior week (2.25M) as the most-watched WNBA game since Memorial Day 2001.

The three most-watched WNBA games since 2001 have come just in the first 6 weeks this season, two being matchups of Clark and Reese and the third being Clark’s debut against Connecticut on Opening Night.

Chicago’s win was also the most-watched WNBA telecast ever on ESPN.

After the WNBA went nearly 16 years without a single 7-figure audience, there have already been 9 games this season to surpass the MILLION viewer mark.

8 of the 9 have involved Clark and the Fever, including Friday June 21’s Fever-Dream game on ION — which averaged 1.18 million, the largest WNBA audience ever on the Scripps-owned “netlet” that began airing games last season. The previous high was 1.02 million for Fever-Mystics earlier this month, and the high before that was 742,000 for Fever-Sparks in May.

Indiana’s games against Atlanta and Chicago were their 11th and 12th this season to set a viewership record on their respective network. In total, 13 WNBA games this season have set a viewership record, with Liberty-Lynx in May setting a mark on CBS that was later broken by a Sky-Fever matchup.

Caitlin is driving this, but it would be disingenuous to not acknowledge the bump in numbers for the Sky games, after the season settled in and numbers slumped. Then again, the "bad" numbers are when the game was only on the App. Looks like about 1M viewers for Ion games, and 2 to 2.5M for games on the networks or ESPN.

2.3M viewers seems good but compare that to Iowa's 6 game 2024 NCAA Tournament run:

3.23M viewers vs Holy Cross
4.9M vs W Virginia
6.87M vs Colorado
12.3M vs LSU
14.4M vs UConn
18.9M vs South Carolina (All-Time College WBB Record)

Fever-Aces latest WNBA game to top million mark

The Tuesday July 2, 2024 Fever-Aces WNBA regular season game averaged 1.45 million viewers on ESPN, marking the 11th game this season to surpass the million viewer mark — the most in any WNBA season since 2002.

Entering this season, no WNBA game had averaged a seven-figure audience since 2008.

The Aces’ win, which peaked with 1.71 million in the 10 PM ET quarter-hour, ranks eighth for the season in viewership.

Caitlin Clark and the Fever have played in the top 8 and 10 of the top 11 WNBA games this season.

For the night, Fever-Aces was cable’s top program in all the key adult and male demographics.

Caitlin Clark’s Fever continue to drive TV ratings, Advertising Revenue, for WNBA

by Jon Lewis
July 9, 2024

In the Caitlin Clark era, WNBA audiences that would have once qualified as milestones have become routine.

Saturday July 6th’s New York Liberty-Indiana Fever WNBA regular season game averaged 1.87 million viewers on CBS, marking the fifth-largest WNBA audience in the past 23 years. Each of the top five have come this season and involved Clark and the Fever.

Indiana’s win, which peaked with 2.65 million in the 2:45 PM ET quarter-hour, was the 11th WNBA game this season with a seven-figure audience — the most in any season since 2002 (12). The WNBA entered this season having gone nearly 16 years without a single seven-figure audience. Clark and the Fever have played in 10 of the 11 games with a million viewers this season, and led into the lone exception — Sparks-Aces on May 18.

As should be no surprise, the Clark bonanza is translating into higher ad revenue for the networks. According to the advertising analytics company EDO, WNBA regular season games generated an estimated $12.4 million in television ad revenue through the end of June, up 36% from the same point last year ($9.1M) and nearly doubling the same point in 2022 ($6.6M).

The increase in ad revenue is relatively modest compared to the rise in advertising impressions, 2.2 billion through June — up 57 percent from the same point last year and up nearly 700 percent from just 278 million in 2022. By comparison, the full regular season of women’s college basketball generated $26 million in ad revenue off of 2.7 billion impressions.

Fever games account for just over a third of the ad revenue ($4.3M) and nearly half of the impressions (1.0B), no small feat given Indiana has played in just nine percent of the total number of national games thus far (17 of 53). (Excluding NBA TV, Indiana has played in just over a third of the games, 12 of 34.) EDO estimates that advertisements during Fever games generate more-than-double the level of engagement of those during other games, which the company measures by tracking behavior such as visits to advertisers websites and searches related to their products.

As for the non-Fever games, ION averaged 516,000 for regional action late Friday night, preceded by Dream-Wings at 414,000 — the network’s two most-watched games this season that did not involve or follow the Fever.

Clark the main draw, but rest of WNBA picking up with viewers

by Jon Lewis
July 16, 2024

Caitlin Clark continues to be the WNBA’s biggest draw, but the league is drawing some of its best numbers in years even without her on the court.

Sunday’s Fever-Lynx WNBA regular season game averaged 1.57 million viewers on ESPN, marking the seventh-largest WNBA audience since 2002. The ten largest audiences since 2002 have come this season, all for games involving Caitlin Clark and the Fever.

Indiana’s win was the most-watched WNBA game to ever involve the Minnesota Lynx, a four-time champion and six-time finalist that dominated the 2010s under star Maya Moore. Indiana and Minnesota played against each other in two WNBA Finals (nine total games), with the most-watched of those being Game 2 of their 2012 matchup at 778,000.

Fever-Lynx was the second WNBA game that day and the third in 72 hours to top the million viewer mark. Earlier in the day, ABC averaged 1.02 million for Mercury-Sun, marking the second time this season that a WNBA game has topped the million mark without Clark on the court. Unlike the first such game — Sparks-Aces on May 18 (1.34M) — Connecticut’s blowout win did not air directly adjacent to Clark and the Fever. The game aired at 1 PM ET on ABC, concluding more than an hour earlier than Fever-Lynx began on ESPN.

The other million viewer game did involve Clark, as ION averaged 1.34 million million for Mercury-Fever on Friday night — the network’s largest WNBA audience yet, surpassing the previous high of 1.18 million for Fever-Dream in June.

In total, 15 WNBA games this season have averaged at least one million viewers — surpassing 2000 (14) as (in all likelihood) the most in any WNBA season.

Rounding out the weekend slate, ABC averaged 961,000 for Liberty-Sky on Saturday afternoon — the 20th game this season to average at least 900,000 viewers — and CBS scored 676,000 for a battle of cellar-dwellers between the Sparks and Wings later in the day. ION scored 460,000 for Lynx-Storm in the second half of its Friday doubleheader.

Going back to last week, NBA TV averaged 238,000 for a Mystics-Fever game last Wednesday that began at Noon ET — the seventh-largest audience on the network this season. As one would expect given the Noon weekday timeslot, it was the least-watched Clark game this season.

That's what I meant by the rest of the League working this "Like a borrowed mule." ;)

That's what I meant by the rest of the League working this "Like a borrowed mule." ;)

It's too bad the WNBA was not better prepared for the eyeballs it was about to receive

All of these viewers are seeing:

* The horrible officiating

* The jealousy and pettiness of the players

* The jealousy and pettiness of the Olympic Selection Committee (CC should be on the team)

* The Olympic Head Coach being a complete ass (giving more reason not to watch them in Paris)

There continue to be people who are pushing the narrative that Angel Reese is a big part of the buzz. Just now a new ESPN video popped up on my YouTube home page, with the title, "Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese cause record-breaking viewership...". What a load of bull. Angel Reese has little to nothing to do with it. I also saw a WNBA segment on ESPN tv this morning in which one of the women couldn't say "Caitlin Clark" without also adding "... and Angel Reese...".

It's been 26 years (!!!) since the WNBA has had these types of viewership numbers.

Caitlin's impact has been, simply, incredible.

WNBA ends First Half with Record 16th Million Viewer Audience

by Jon Lewis
July 18, 2024

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever closed out the first half of the WNBA season with yet another million viewer audience.

Wednesday’s Fever-Wings WNBA regular season game averaged 1.70 million viewers on ESPN, marking the 16th game this season with a seven-figure audience — the most in any WNBA season (including the playoffs and finals). The previous high was 15 in 1998, a figure that included all three games of the WNBA Finals.

14 of the 16 games with a million viewer audience this season have involved Caitlin Clark and the Fever. The lone exceptions were Sparks-Aces on May 18 (1.34M) — which led directly out of a Fever game — and Mercury-Sun this past Sunday (1.02M).

Keep in mind that three additional Fever games, including Clark’s home debut, aired on Amazon Prime Video and were not Nielsen rated.

Prior to this season, the last WNBA game to average a million viewers was Candace Parker’s career debut in 2008.

Overall, Indiana’s loss — in which Clark set the WNBA single-game assist record — delivered the sixth-largest WNBA audience since 2002. The top 11 games over that span have involved Clark and the Fever.

Fever-Wings was the last regular season game before the All-Star break. Due to the Olympic break, there are no more WNBA regular season games until August 15 and no more Fever games until August 16 against Phoenix.

Yeah, but what about all of those million-viewer Sky games due to the huge popularity of Angel Reese? People keep telling me the surge in popularity is because of Clark AND Reese.

The largest TV audiences in WNBA history:

(1) 5.04M:
June, 1997, the first day of play, Liberty vs Sparks

(2) 3.59M: June 1997, second day of play, Sting vs Mercury

(3) 3.44M: July 20, 2024; WNBA All Star Game

The previous record for a WNBA All-Star Game was 1.44 million for the 2003 game on ABC, the first to air on broadcast television. Last year’s All-Star Game, which also aired in primetime on ABC, had 850,000.

The WNBA All-Star Game easily outdrew the NHL All-Star Game
on ABC earlier this year, which aired in the afternoon (1.40M), and also comfortably topped the NASCAR All-Star Race on FS1 (2.57M). The other three major all-star events ranked higher, with the NBA All-Star Game at 5.40 million, NFL Pro Bowl Games at 5.79 million and last week’s MLB All-Star Game at 7.44 million.
