I don't know if you all have seen this stat, but in Kirk Ferentz's tenure only 3 of his teams have had 30+ sacks, those being the 2002, 2009, and 2015 teams. In those years we also happened to have 11, 11, and 12 wins (some of the best years in Iowa FB history!).

So far I believe we have 12 sacks through 3 games, easily on pace to surpass 30 for the season. Does this mean we are destined for a 11+ win season? Only time will tell!

Not entirely accurate ... the Hawks had 30+ sacks in '03 and '04. Of course, we had 10 win seasons in those years.

Also, the number seems a little tenuous ... because the Hawks were pretty close to 30 sacks in both '01 and '17 ... and those seasons, while CLOSE to being really nice seasons ... still were just a smidge off.

I thought the stat was 30+ from the dline? Which either way we have 9 already from the dline

Those seasons would have been great seasons with a few more sacks and forced fumbles ;)

The DL didn't have 30+ sacks in '09. The '02 D owned the most sacks of any Ferentz era D ... and it owns that distinction by a margin. It's one of the few Ferentz era Ds where the DL had 30+ sacks. The '03 DL also had 30+ sacks. I don't know of any other Ferentz era DLs that have hit that mark.

Also, from my count, the Iowa DL has accumulated 10 sacks through 3 games. (4 for Epenesa, 2 for Hesse, 1 for A. Nelson, 1 for M. Nelson, 1 for Reiff, and 1 for Lattimore)

Comparing sack numbers from early Ferentz to now is not the same with QBs now being able to throw the ball away anytime they get outside the pocket. It's more appropriate to compare NCAA ranks for the given year.

So what's the magic number here? 30 or more sacks = at least 10 wins?
It shouldn't take a great team to get 10 wins with this schedule.
If we go 10-2 with losses to wiscy and psu. that'll be nice, but nothing special imo......

For the Hawkeye football program, a 10-win season is always a great season... no matter the schedule.
nothing wrong with a 10 win season by any means, that said it would probably be my least favorite 10 win season......

Yeah, 2002 was the era of big statues at QB. I think Michigan had a 6'6 stiff name Navarre and he was pretty easy to sack.
