45 Points

In Noah Fant's interview on B1G Network, he referred to the goal of 45 points a game for the offense. It didn't sound like a number that he pulled out of thin air, but possibly one that has been talked about within the offense meetings. I don't recall ever hearing this type of talk before. Is this possibly something that Brian Ferentz has brought to the program? If so, I have a few thoughts.
This is very encouraging.
I know the team reads books every year with different ideas regarding teamwork, motivation, and self-improvement. The first step to achieving a goal is to vocalize it or make it known, write it down. This means that it is a focus of the offense.
Rather than just playing ball control football and winning or losing by one score, this tells me that they are going to put the pedal down when they get a chance and build a nice cushion, before playing grind it out football. And step on some throats when necessary, allowing me to breath a little easier against some of the lesser opponents.
In order to get to 45 points, you have to be more aggressive than the Ferentz-ball we are all used to. I think this tells us that Brian might be chipping away at his old man, and getting him to open up the playbook a little more. I feel we have been on the up swing for a few years as far as talent on offense. We have some nice weapons this year, I think that we are going to use them.
If we can put a typical Hawkeye defense out there this year and even if we don't hit 45 a game, but increase our average by 3-7 points per game, we probably win 1-2 more games this year vs. last.
Now if this 45 point this has been around the whole time, please disregard everything above, we're screwed.:)
Go Hawks!!!

He realizes he won't be playing EVERY game vs our defense, right?

I'm sure Iowa will score some points this year. They got rolling toward the end of the year.

I also think (pray) our defense will be better this year. It really couldn't be worse, so we have that going for us.

I would love to see that. It's hard to imagine a KF coached team averaging that for a season. Realistically it won't happen. But, man, I would REALLY love to see that much scoring firepower.

I love it. So Iowa only scores 38 sometimes. Other times they'll go all Ohio State and get 55 or more. But, of course, far more important than the number 45 itself is the mentality behind it. The traditional KF offensive mentality has been to avoid the turnover, then punt.

What a reversal it is to send the kids out there with the mentality that they need to score at least 45 points! Now THAT's offense. And that's what many of us have been pleading for lo these many years. To think it could be happening at last is incredible.

Bottom line: defense limits the other team's points while the offense scores as many points as possible. Now that's football, certainly. ;)

Really? They were 17th in the country in scoring defense. I could be one helluva lot worse.

The first game (will it be against isu that apparently will trot out the b12's highest rated DL, or wisc's kryptonite defense, or NW's voodoo defense?) in which we end up clawing our way to 13 points, this thread will be bumped up (justifiably) by resident trolls. So not looking forward to that.

What has the offense averaged the last few years? I'd guess 30 or so. I could be totally wrong, but to ask for 50% improvement seems a stretch.

Hmm, yea we did only score 44 against ISU last year, so there's that...
