Congrats on the ranking. Just remember, these rankings can be volatile from week to week. The committee starts from scratch every week. If you drop to 6 (or more) after next week, don't be outraged. Just keep winning and all will work itself out

Iowa fans are accustomed to both volatile rankings and performances. Nebraska fans are also accustomed to both, but struggling to acknowledge the reality of one of the two.

No need to drag Nebraska into this thread. I want to see the Big Ten do well nationally. Iowa and OSU need to keep winning so the winner gets in the playoff

Sorry, you're right. You've always been fair here (and on the hoops board). You don't want the Hawks to beat Nebraska, though :). You want Iowa to keep winning until Black Friday. And I'm Joseph McCarthy until Iowa loses.

You used the "s" word. I don't think that's allowed on message boards. :p

Well of course I want Nebraska to win the Black Friday game, but Iowa will be favored and will already (should) have the division wrapped up.

Great to see the respect/recognition from the CFP Committee, and I hope it slows down all of the "disrespect" whining that seems to be coming from Iowa fans in the media. However, I'm not sure I like being this high at this point. With 3 losing teams left on the schedule, there is very little chance Iowa can move up in the next 3 polls, and a very good chance they could drop down even with solid wins, and that's hard to watch.

From another point of view, could you image how things would be if Pitt didn't flake out and was able to beat N. Carolina and ND? Iowa would be a Top 4 team with a strong case for #1.

We'll find out over the next 3 weeks if Iowa can do what they haven't done very well the past 20 years - Can this team handle this high level of success and expectations?

what worries me is the following:

1) #1 Clemson wins rest of their games; they are in
2) #2 Alabama wins out
3) #3 Ohio State loses and is out of top 4
4) #4 ND wins out, moves to #3
5) #6 Baylor moves to #4 because of its upcoming wins over Oklahoma, Ok State, TCU and Texas
6) #5 Iowa stays at #5 with "just" the win over #3 Ohio State

Baylor isn't going to win every one of those games. They haven't played a team with a winning record all season and those remaining games are going to be brutal - except for Texas - of course.

What a pleasant surprise. We'll see how long it lasts.

I'm not worried about Baylor. OU will take care of them for us this week. No freshman QB is A) outscoring a hot Baker Mayfield or B) putting up big points against OU's defense. Yes, there's at least one B12 team that plays honest-to-goodness defense. K-State nearly came back on Baylor last week and they're turrible, to quote Sir Charles.

Hey, congrats Iowa! This ranking is certainly proof that the committee has not particular dislike for Iowa. Your team has earned it. I still think Iowa wins the B1G by a good margin. The playoffs will depend on a lot of factors no one can predict now, of course.

But as long as the Hawks keep playing like they have, and CJ stays healthy, you guys have a great shot at it all. It's remarkable what a coach with a great QB and generally good players can do. The end of last year, a lot of you were wondering about deficiencies in recruiting, coaching, and any number of other things. Once in a while, for whatever reason, stars align and magic happens. Now, if Iowa keeps the magic going for a couple years the Hawks will have a chance to join the ranks of the perennially elite. THAT would be awesome for the B1G, especially the West, which has had abuse heaped on it from everyone.

BigRed, As much as I want that to happen we've been down this road before. Iowa doesn't get the five star recruits, but they do get a lot of guys who can be just as good as any of those 5 star recruits. They just need time to develop. This means that every few years, after these players have gotten big and strong enough combined with the experience of a few years Iowa gets a good football team. But what they can't do is just replace players year after year with somebody who is just as good like Alabama and Ohio State can. Heck, those are probably the only two schools in the country that can do that. It also takes a solid quarterback too, and those are hard to come by.

The committee basically just told Iowa that if they win the rest of their games they will be in the playoffs. Now, time to take care of business.
Doomed if: Undefeated Iowa wins the Big Ten -- including a win over undefeated Ohio State -- and is still left out. Last week we talked about the possibility of a two-loss Michigan team winning the Big Ten and being left out, but this is decidedly more painful. Fans would like to assume that an undefeated Power 5 conference champion is an automatic lock for the CFP, but the committee clearly has no problem putting a one-loss team over several undefeated teams, and Notre Dame's schedule -- assuming the Irish win out and beat the Pac-12 champ in Stanford -- could trump Iowa's in the eyes of some committee members. Notre Dame's SOS is No. 12, Iowa's is 62.

62 must be pretty good. I could have sworn that Jeff Long just said yesterday that Iowa's SOS was the second highest of any undefeated team on the list.

Long said the committee is increasingly impressed with Iowa because it has the strongest strength of schedule among undefeated teams other than No. 1 Clemson, and the Hawkeyes have two road wins over top-25 teams (Wisconsin and Northwestern).

Ya know, funny thing is I could see Baylor coming in at 11-0 that final week (which I think is Conf. Champ. week), and then laying the ultimate egg against Texas ala West Virginia-Pittsburgh in 2007.

I honestly think the absurdity of Long's explosive offense comments last week helped us this week. Alvarez and other B10 supporters must have given him a talkin to

It's possible, but even a two loss Michigan would be ranked somewhere around 10 in a CCG. I still think somebody else would get the boot in favor of Notre Dame because one of the spots is reserved for an undefeated Big 10 team.
