Of course the 1st half production cost us the game, but no folding up the tents for this team in a tough place to play.
Good to make the Boilermakers and their fans sweat some.

Yeah it's a loss but one I won't lose sleep over tonight.

Great. Moral victories. You win or you lose. This is the 9th loss. Nothing to celebrate.

This makes no sense - who was celebrating the loss? OP just said he won’t lose sleep over it. I won’t either. Doesn’t mean I’m throwing a party and talking about how awesome this loss was. Flush it, there are some you lose and sometimes you just get beat by a better team. No shame in that.

I would agree with the intimidation reference. I was flipping back n forth with the Iowa women, (A much better game). Anyway, I think Sanfort misses his wide open 3's way too much. It was nice to see Josh O. get some minutes, he might not be really offensively productive and no he is not going to shoot 3's but he got some rebounds and is not afraid to challenge. As hot as Perkins was against Illinois he was not against Purdue. Pretty weak guard play by Iowa. And once again Fran waits until we are at least 10 points behind before calling a timeout to maybe talk about things.

So Iowa scored 52 in 2nd half cut the lead from 17 to 14?

The starting lineup was awful...they didn't guard at all to start the game and got down 13 or 14 in 1st 5 minutes,
The in the 2nd half the backups got the Purdue lead under 10 and Fran brought back the 4 starter plus PMAC and they again lost ground to Purdue.

I thought Josh looked competent and could keep Edey from getting position too close to basket. Sandfort was off in his shooting. PMAC was on. Perhaps a longer leash with Josh Dix might have helped. Ulis and Perkins need to play better defensively. Can't sell out on the Edey double teams and go under screens and let Purdue play a game of HORSE.

This loss was expected. Defense hasn't been good so has this year so that limits Iowa's chances of winning when the shots are not dropping. 5/18 from 3pt line ---needed to be 10/18.

Ulis should have been benched about 2 minutes into the game. Think his man scored 7 and burned him another time for an easy kick out 3. And intimidated isn’t a strong enough word, ive never seen a team look like that whenever they got in the lane! Pretty much just laid down and cowered at the sight of the almighty Edey.

Coming out with ultra soft, token defense is a hallmark of Fran teams. We see it most games.

As long as you don't foul you stay in.

That strategy has its positives and negatives and the negative is that its easy for the opponent to score.

No one called it a moral victory. No one is celebrating.

Interesting analysis here. Note that Braden Smith scored 11 more than expected based on the shots he took

Our only chance to win this game was to press from the jump. I would have increased our intensity early and worn out Edey in an up and down, higher tempo game.

yes. Brock is taller, however...and higher ranked, actually.... ;)

I would be thrilled if Brock turns out as well. I was really impressed with the way Smith handled the press and obviously he shot the ball well against us. He looks a little beefier than Brock, but that's often the difference of 1 year at that age. He was pretty quick with the ball, got past Ulis much to easily.

Triple teaming Eddy sure wasn't the answer.

If we run into them again I'd like to see more Ogundele and maybe even some Mulvey and just play him straight up. Let him get his shots but stay home everywhere else.

That's how they beat Rick Mount. Let him score 60 something, but shut down the rest. Against Zach Edey, Iowa can certainly manage that with the defense we play under Fran! :D

The problem with this team is that someone has a big game and we expect (hope) he has turned the corner and will continue that same trend. And then they don't. Time is running out for certain players to establish themselves as B1G threats.

It reminds me of the two reg season games last year with Purdue. We all know what happened in the BTT where I think Iowa finally figured out how to beat Purdue.

I re-watched this game today and was struck by how easily we could have actually taken a lead late in this game and maybe stole this one.
When Patrick scored on that drive and was fouled there was around 5-6minutes left.
If he makes the ft, then Sandy makes that layup and two open threes we lead by one pt.
Who knows how PU reacts to losing the lead? They were coughing it up vs press anyway and a few more made buckets give us more pressing chances.

As Fran said in his postgame our rotations were not great in the 1st half.
But we did not play that bad. I would like another crack at them in Chicago.

That was probably the worst display of handling pressure I've ever seen.

Purdue tried to choke that game away and Iowa couldn't hit the shots to take it.

Iowa could have easily scored 60 in that half.
