66k tickes sold vs. Illinois

How is this not sold out? You guys are 5-0 and in the drivers seat in the West Division against another 1-0 West Division team, and a team many of you (at least on the eastern border) consider a rival.

Well a lot of fans gave up their tickets after last year to send a point to the AD that they weren't going to fund future years of playing the way they have the past four years. Now that we are playing better so far this year, they are slowly coming back.

It surprises me. I guess many of the fans saw the poor schedule this year and what they thought to be a mediocre team and made other plans. Now they don't want to break them. It may take some time to gain the fans back. Oh, and Illinois isn't much of a rival in football. Basketball, yes.

Maybe everybody got invites to game day weddings

$70 per ticket is a lot of money to pay with a home schedule that features an unranked Pittsburgh as the "premiere" game. Combined with the general fan discontent prior to this year and mediocre at best schedule and a lot of people decided not to renew.

If Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan were on the schedule, it probably wouldn't be like this. That said, if Iowa gets past NW undefeated with two home games to get to 9-0, ticket prices will soar.

Those who didn't buy season tickets apparently aren't buying single game tickets either. They are at home grumbling "product" and "weak schedule" while some of us are at Kinnick enjoying a 5-0 team.

Could not agree more. The 'weak schedule' is tired and has more than run its course.

The fans there Saturday will be there primarily to support the Hawks. Does not matter if it is Illinois or some other team. This team deserves all of the fan support possible.l

Am I the only one who thinks its a possibility we may not see the 71k numbers again?

As it's been mentioned many times, it's a growing trend nationally.

I'm guessing that many people who gave up their season tickets might be seeing how cheap & nice it is to watch the game from home versus waking up early, driving over an hour, and dealing with all of the game day traffic, all while saving money.

The occasional game is fun. But it gets old doing it every single game.

I'd need more of an incentive from the University to go every single weekend.
Translation: sell beer at kinnick and make the shit semi affordable.

Long time fan, no doubt.

The experience differs for many. It is too bad that you will not likely ever be able to understand how thousands of Hawkeye fans cannot wait to see the game from their respective seats in Kinnick.

First off, I don't see the correlation between being a "longtime fan" and having joined a message board less than a month ago.

Im curious on your reasoning & await your response on that.

Second, in no way do I understand why that would even be relevant to what I've said.

When I go to a game, I can't wait to be there. But it's much easier/cheaper and sometimes nicer to do it from home.

Lastly, you can reply to my original post without sounding like a stuckup jackass. Yes, I joined a couple weeks ago. I've had more to do in the past few years than sit on a message board all day, every day.

You can buy 50 yard line seats on the street for under face. Why would anyone pay face off the Iowa website for tickets in the upper corners. This isnt 2010 with a loaded football team and an excellent home schedule. If Iowa finishes well this year, with a decent home schedule next year, ticket sales will improve for 2016.

It's expensive going to a game when you drive 4-5 hours one way. You spend 55-70 per ticket then if you stay in a hotel the night before or night of in Iowa City you're looking at 115+. Then food, etc.... I mean even two people and you are looking at dropping 400-500 for a weekend.

We actually count how many attend-Nebby troll!!

No troll. Serious question.
It's him.

Alum, the drop in season tickets was just too large. That is a lot of single game tickets to sell. They lost something like 7k season ticket holders? That would put them at about 3k over capacity right now with 66k sold so far.

They probably won't be too far from a sellout this week.

This years success will show up in next years season ticket sales. Plus tougher home schedule by far will also have major impact.

My question for Alum-Ni - for the rather putrid/inconsistent product that Nebby puts on the field this year, how are the huskers still maintaining their attendance levels?

I don't understand the "weak schedule" argument. Don't folks pay to see the HAWKEYES play? I am not a Miami Marlins fan so I pick and choose the games I go to based on the opponent. As a fan of the HAWKEYES I don't give a rats ass who they are playing. I want to see them win.

That makes sense. Thanks for the info.

It's the "thing to do" in Nebraska. The entire state lives for Husker football and has done it for generation, after generation, after generation. That, and the tickets were sold before the season even started, not knowing how Mike Riley's first team would fare. So if the tickets are already bought, might as well use them.

People have threatened or wondered if the product gets really bad, will people stop showing up.......hard to say. I think most will continue to go, just because of the love of the game. However, I don't think you'll see anymore expansion of the stadium in the near future (outside of some luxury suites perhaps), the university has seemed to have hit a maximum on season ticket demand.

Wish I could go, but like many others my kids and their sporting events are more important. We make it every couple of years on an off weekend.

Keep in mind, Illinois returned 2,000 of their 3,000 tickets. So now Iowa has to find buyers for those tickets at the last minute.
On the HawkeyeSports website, you can't get 2 tickets side by side in any section on the sideline. Only seats available are upper corner endzone and upper middle endzone. Lower endzone seats are sold. You won't see large gaps of empty seats on Saturday.

Like Michigan, they have loyal fans? Didn't that putrid team beat you guys last year?

I have to work about half the home game weekends. Kids have sporting events every weekend. It takes 5 hrs to drive there. The royals are in the post season. I got season tickets for several years in a row. Couldn't give the extras away. Financially it just became stupid to continue paying the ticket price and seat fee. The product was pretty bad. Yes, we are 5-0 but we could easily go on a skid. I can get tickets any time I want. Other questions?

Imagine a season where Iowa state, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Ohio State all play at Iowa City. You don't see that home schedule as being more desirable than our home schedule this year?????

A buddy and I are heading over from Des Moines. Count me as a former season ticket holder who gave my tickets up 3 years ago ... I still enjoy getting back to Kinnick every now and then ... Actually, this will be my third game this year (Ill St, Pitt, Ill) ...

One thing I wish "some" fans would not do and that's "call out" other fans for not going to games (just because you decided to go or just because you have season tickets). For the "super fans" who like to call other fans out: You don't know other people's situation (i.e. money, time, work, kids, etc.). And, you have to remember, Iowa football has been down ... not just for one season ... And, technology (i.e. social media, etc.) has really changed our lives. There are lots of factors why people aren't going to games ... and it's not just Iowa City.

So how about instead of labeling yourself "Super fan" (because you go to games) that you instead enjoy your experience at Kinnick and let's all enjoy the ride and see where this season takes us. I will be at Kinnick tomorrow. That being said, I am not going to critique those who won't be there.

Been to the Illinois State and Pittsburgh games - both were not sold out, but the crowd that was there was as loud as any sold out game I have been to. If we end up with 67,000 in the seats tomorrow I am fine with it. the fans that have been going to the games have gotten their money's worth- the games have been a blast so far.

That's all fine and good but make those same comments to the fans that called us ST holders the problem for the mediocre seasons.

I think it could be. Its a trend in college sports, a lot of stadiums are not filling up because every game is accessible via internet/TV. Why pay the money to travel/tailgate/tickets/etc... when you can sit at home and watch it on your 50+in Big Screen?

I personally think in Iowa's situation the hammering down on tailgating ran a lot of people off. People used to come up just to tailgate, and then get enough booze in them and would buy a ticket and go to the game. Now you don't see that as often and most tailgate areas are smaller and spread out. People are not making the trips anymore and just staying at home.

Last week @ Wisky, they said 80,000 were there, but you see in the one end zone the top 1/4 of it was empty for majority of the game.

It seems a bit crazy to me that this game isn't sold out for you guys. Over the years I have lived in San Diego, LA, San Fran, Portland, Honolulu, Anchorage, and now Houston and have seen a pretty big fan presence for you folks everywhere I go. There is the support, so it is surprising to me with your start it isn't sold out. Different world today though.
