*****Iowa vs Illinois Game Thread*****

That was the worst played game by an Iowa women's team in maybe 10 years. Simply inexcusable. For the first time, I'm questioning Jan's coaching. This team was NOT ready for a very winnable road game against an opponent who just lost their two starting guards for the season.
I am also questioning Jensen knowing what the h*** she is doing.
very little improvement from game-to-game floor play, passing, intensity, offensive sets, etc.
bad FT shooting,
bad passing,
unexplainable and WTF subbing,
AOG/HS/KF/stemlow/SA do not even have a BBall shot they just throw the ball up and hope it goes in
AOG is just too slow mentally and speed wise but continues to get big minutes
She plays everybody in the first half (except AH) including team managers and then some folks never see the court the second half.

I do not think JJ knows what she is doing as the head coach and is way over her head. This team will be lucky to be .500 in BIG.
That was a pathetic game from just about everyone, players and coaches.

Probably said in here already, but the handling of Heiden tonight was atrocious.

She should’ve been in as backup.. but putting her in midway through the 4th and yanking her quickly is not the way.

She’s either mixed in the first 3 quarters.. preferably over Ogrady or not at all. Putting her in that spot isn’t fair for a freshman big.

Just like the freshmen learning as they go so is Jan learning to be a head coach as she goes.
Unfortunately this is division 1 and not a learn as you go league.

The team played poorly, but one thing that really rubbed me the wrong way was watching the players on the bench when we were down in the 4th quarter. Laughing, whispering jokes, smiling. The lack of a sense of urgency is all over the team and shows up on the stat line with the turnovers. The girls need to get locked in and take the game seriously. This starts from the top. Jan seems to be too much of a players coach. They have no discipline.

CC was like a coach on the floor. She got on players when it was needed. I don't see that this year from anyone (coaches/players).

it’s getting real old when two of our players keep laughing and giggling on the court when they screw up. I get it, doing it once in a while is fine but let’s get a game face on and show some intensity, get pissed. This is basketball not volleyball.
Until this team gets serious and plays 40 minutes with intensity, they will be average at best. JMO

I have to wonder if this team would be performing better if Lisa was still the head coach? Or, did Lisa for see some of these issues coming and decided to retire? I guess we will never know.

But we do have to be pleased about their wonderful free throw shooting. I'm over 65 and would bet I cold shoot 50%. I've never understood how these college kids can play basketball for over 15 years and be above the normal college player and piss away so many non guarded shots?????

Anybody who has been an assistant as long as she has shouldn't need learn as you go. If she doesn't know what she is doing by now it's not happening. She isn't some youngster in their first coaching gig.

Lisa had JJ.

I don't think anyone is stepping up to be a meaningful asst coach DURING games.

Absolutely no one is playing well right now. Has the Gyamfi, just have fun approach, overtaken the team?

This team has been sinking and could go down the tubes real quick. No leadership from top to bottom. Poor game strategy. Poor game execution. Same mistakes over and over. There is no savior on the bench and no easy way out. The program is in danger of throwing away the momentum built up during the CC years. The post feed obsession needs to be exterminated and accountability factored into playing time.

So Guyton w/4 TOs, is that stat more meaningful now @pablow @HawksGoneWild1 @MVPFAN etc….

Yet another reason why I’m more than happy to let the coaches make personnel decisions without my help. Both ways, I’m glad started her, but in no way was I upset she wasn’t 🤷‍♂️

I guess you'll have to take up your beef with Jan as well as to why she started Guyton. The reason she started Guyton is exactly the reasons as stated.

Maybe you think frosh shouldn't be able to progress throughout the season? So having ONE turnover in her last 47 mins prior to the IL game shouldn't factor into a decision, is that what you're saying? Or are you saying, once you've exhibited you're TO prone, you can never get out of that doghouse? If that's the case, then I would say most of the upperclassmen shouldn't be starting as well.

How do you reward a player and the team when a player is executing in areas your team is sorely hurting? It seems to me the only person who can plug 4 holes with one player at this point is Guyton.

Jan speaks about why she started Guyton:

One other thing not mentioned on why Guyton needs to start is because we don't have ballhandlers who can breakdown the defense. She has this ability. Plus, her scoring %'s, defense and having only ONE TO in the prior 47 mins. She was rewarded for this consistent play like she should have.

Are you saying you'd rather have AOG start yet so they can keep on lobbing errant passes to her? This is another reason I want AOG out to stop the lob madness fest we seem to have when she is in.

At this point, we don't have many perfect options, we're mostly coming from a place of the lesser of X# of evils at this point. As many have stated, CC covered up a multiple of sins that our current upperclassmen are having problems with now.

I will also point out Ka$h's take on Guyton. I'll take the advice of an insider who has played the game and has more insight on it from a player's point of view. @40:55 - 52:00.

Wish we had better option to choose from, but they are few and far between. Recently, Guyton has demonstrated she can play without turning the ball over much. She's a frosh so there will be growing pains to smooth out the rough edges. Guyton to me fills the most holes in one player and has the most potential to lift this team into a better place if given the chance to do so.

We can’t get DEAL quick enough. Hope like hell she’s the answer..

We didn't play like this in the MG years before Caitlin. This reminds me of the mid-2000's when we had Megan Skouby. Like O'Grady, she'd plant herself on the block, where bad things usually happened.
Before CC22 we had Sam Logic and Kathleen Doyle both all B1G point guards and both #22 by the way. Doyle played most of her career with Gus, and Doyle was the B1G player of the year, the year before CC22 got to Iowa. To repeat, we don't have that player, and Jan was not the HC coach then either...

This. Its been going on all year. Even without Bluder that shit would not have been going on not only with CC22, but Kate or Gabby as senior leaders. There would have been some red ass on the bench, in the locker room, and at practice the next day, and wouldn't have had to be up to Bluder either, but she'd have brung it if she had to. We heard all off season that "this is our time". Well okay, this is your legacy ladies, how do you want this chapter written, because right now it looks like you gals were just there to carry CC22, gym bag for her....

Doyle was certainly good, but not the wunderkind that Clark was, and yet we didn't plant the post on the block and hope for good things. But yes, that was Bluder then, and now it's Jensen. Grinder-ball it is.

As for us not having any players, Olsen was just named to the Wooden Award Top 25 list.

I'm not saying KD was CC22 by any means, but "good". She was B1G player of the year, and an AA. Thats a bit more then good. She was also the point guard when Gus was B1G player of the year, and NPOTY, so she certainly helped in that regard. Lucy's a good player, and I'm glad we got her , but tell me how she's made ANYONE on this team better. CC22 obviously made those players around her WAY better, and I think Doyle also raised the teams level of play. Really good point guards do that. I don't see that from Lucy at all. Maybe a part of it is that she's "the new kid on the block", but I don't see her making the team better like a elite point guard does.

Doyle was very good but what I liked about her most was that she was a gritty player, loved her toughness.
