NIL for one thing it’s hard for Iowa to compete with that oil and gas money. The On3 article I saw had it at 1.5 million for the #1 kid in the 26 class that just committed to Oklahoma That’s not happening at Iowa. . . .

Demographics Oklahoma City metro population 1.4 million of which 13% African Americans or roughly 182,000. Iowa City metro area 174000 and 5.8% African American roughly 10,000. . . . because Iowa was too white. Iowa is a tough sell to a lot of people

SEC is by far the best conference for women’s basketball and I don’t think the Big10 is close at all.

Ask someone that has never been to Iowa what the first thing that comes to mind when they hear the name Iowa and I bet their answer is corn. When you land in Cedar Rapids what are you surrounded by corn fields. Hayden Fry talked about this the hardest thing they had to overcome was getting a kid to visit the campus. If they could get them here they felt they had a good chance to get them to commit.

This is my opinion hell I could be wrong about all of that. I just feel that recruiting kids to Iowa is a tough sell
First, Aaliyah Chavez was asking for a ton of money and a guarantee that she would not only a start but be the #1 option on offense. LSU, SC, and TX told her bye-bye. She's in love with herself and her dad is pulling all the strings. I don't envy OK - good luck Jennie.

As far as the Hawks being in a "white" state, ISU has no problems recruiting black athletes to Ames. So I'm not convinced that we are that handicapped in that area. At various times both the men's and women's teams have had a lot of black players. It's a factor sure, but can be over played.

I agree recruiting has picked up getting Deal and Heiden was impressive. Didn’t Hays mom or aunt play for Bluder so Iowa already had a good connection with the family before the recruiting process started. Being from Alaska there was no Division One school within driving distance that has a great basketball program so she was going to have to go a long way from home to attend school no matter where she went. Distance from home can be a factor in choosing a school.

Leah Magner was her Aunt I believe I read, that played for Lisa.

So would a coach now have to bench or cut a player if they didn’t pass to Miss Top Dog enough?
Crazy.
Scholarship players don’t get “cut” except for personal conduct reasons.

Coaches bench (or reduce minutes) for players all the time.

What’s the big deal?

It’s a real thing. Kakert told me once that Donavan Mitchell told him he loved Fran but just couldn’t see himself living in Iowa. It’s always been a thing. Hell it’s why Raveling left, even though he later said it was his biggest mistake.

She's shopping herself for 1.5 million and you are having trouble believing she wants to be top dog?
What I am doubting is you saying that she said she has to be the 1st option on offense and an automatic starter and that this is guaranteed. I am not buying this. Again- please show where you found this.

Gotta give the post CC era time. Wow, instant gratification much?
Agree. I think the women did real well this year after losing an all time great. Thank you Lucy for being the bridge. Love her
Ava, Hannah, Kylie and Addison I feel really good about our starting line up. Also have new big coming in from Alaska to provide quality minutes. If Jan snags a 4 we are in great shape.
If Ava stays on the court she is a 20-10 machine on average. And Addison needs to start from day 1.

Which 5 star recruit are we going to land? Which one? I am telling you that we will land none of them. Then you have to ask youself as a program. Why? It’s called self-reflection and lessons learned. You don’t just move a long. If you want to build something you have to figure out why you keep losing on big recruits.. You know we cannot compete with the big brands right now. Do you think these big brands just somehow became big brands overnight? No. Someone stopped and said how can we build this thing. Why do we keep losing on talent? How can we build something that most talented kids want to be a part of…

So, now you are backtracking saying we will get none, or now Harpring is a longshot in the WBB 2026 recruiting thread.

Did not know that about Chavez, surprised a coach like JB would cave to that

I have never seen where Raveling said he left Iowa because he didn’t want to live in Iowa…not that he didn’t say that…I just never heard or read that , but he was always very complimenting towards Iowa after he left from what I recall.

I doubt he said he didn't want to live in Iowa publicly, but as I recall it was pretty well known that he didn't enjoy all of the attention he received on what he felt was his own time.

I thought it was common knowledge that being black in a very white state wasn’t simple for him.

Maybe it was, just never saw or heard him say that.

Not even saying you are incorrect….just would like to be pointed to an article or interview where he said that.

As far as I know, you're not going to get it exactly from his mouth.

The Daily Reporter - Nov 20, 1985 - George Raveling Settling In at Iowa

The Daily Reporter - Apr 4, 1986 - After he left Iowa

The Courier - Mar 28, 1986 - Anti-Green Acres Effect - New York is Where I'd Rather Stay

Think there's several issues at play here.
1) Even feeling like a celebrity he was suffocated in a fishbowl (more privacy).

2) The quote by Lute Olsen in the 2nd article. Since he refuses to talk about it, tells you all you need to know on this subject. He was open on other subjects and praised Iowa fans. Being silent on this one means one thing.

3) Proving himself over and over wasn't his cup of tea. My gut tells me Iowa was a tough place to recruit his kind of players. He knew there would hits and Iowa city would treat him like a king and he knew there would be misses and then he would have to reprove himself again. That's what his 5 years from now quote tells me.

Which one dominated his mind more is to be debated. However, when taken collectively, things can be a double-edged sword. Suspect there's too much weight coming from several directions that he felt trapped under them. At the same time, if he could garner a great hit rate on recruits committing, he could see winning more often and then he didn't need to reprove himself again.

This is why I say his hit rate on commits wasn't as good as he'd hopeful for and this would tell him 5 years from now he's just going to go through ups and downs of reproving cycles. It's those fishbowl downs he didn't want to relive again and then #2 on the list above has a propensity to rear it's ugly head along with it. Instead of reliving the pain of groundhog's day cycles, more privacy under an urban diversity won out in the end.

Just my 2 cents on it.

Nobody in women’s basketball has the atmosphere that we do. Nobody. We’ve had the goat for the past 2 years and tried everything in our power as a program to get players here. We’re in the running for a lot of big fish. Deal is a nice start. Can we get 2-3 more and actually keep the momentum going? I just don’t know.

He did, but it was along the lines of anonymity. Fish bowl.

I agree. I really thought it would notch up our recruiting. It's been good, of course, but I really thought it would hit another level. Not saying it won't but it's been a little disheartening although I still have hope it'll happen.

It's been said before- I don't think we will see any commitments until revenue sharing is a done deal (late summer?). JJ will have a certain amount to offer and split up along with NIL $. Until she has the amount, she can't really extend dollar amounts. The top recruits that we are wanting are going to want something before committing.

This is how I understand it now. However, you can correct me if you understand it differently.

This ruling on 3/17/2025 allows for player and school to negotiate and even sign players up right now if they wanted.
However, believe it's prudent to wait 6 more days from now to sign Rev Share deals so they know for sure what the legalities are.

The Rev Share amt IA will get this year is already known at $20.5MM as that is like the Rev Share salary cap. Only 29 schools get the highest amt to divvy up between the their different sports. Collective NIL and Corp NIL pots would be extra above the Rev Share amt to disburse to players as contracted.

Believe the part you're talking about is Rev Share payments can't start until the summer on July 1 which is the start of the '25 - '26 season.

Article Title: NCAA to let athletes negotiate NIL deals before enrollment

Despite efforts to keep money from becoming an inducement, many coaches have publicly stated that NIL packages are a major factor in the decision-making process of recruits. [This is what Jan said that no recruit had asked her about academics in the last 6 months in the recruiting process.]

Last February, a federal judge in Tennessee granted a preliminary injunction against the rule. The injunction has allowed booster collectives and schools to make specific financial offers to athletes in the recruiting process during the past year. Monday's [3/17/2025] settlement makes this change permanent. The NCAA's current rules state that only third-party groups can pay athletes for their NIL rights, but that is on track to change this summer.

A hearing to approve the terms of that deal is scheduled for April 7.
As part of the House settlement, each school will be able to share roughly $20.5 million with its athletes via NIL deals next academic year -- a figure that is expected to steadily rise during the 10-year lifespan of the settlement.

Many schools have already started signing contracts with their athletes in anticipation of the settlement's approval. Monday's agreement clears the way for schools to continue negotiating the specific terms of these deals with athletes during the recruiting process."
