Aaron Nagao in the Portal

I usually consider lightweight 125-133. If that's the case, then it's been longer since PSU has had an All American at 125 than it has since Iowa has had a national champ at 133...

If you want to throw in 141 to make PSU look more respectable at the lightweights, and only going back to when wrestling was invented in 2010, then we're looking at 29 AA honors for Iowa and 20 for PSU, 23 top 4 finishes for Iowa and 11 for PSU, 17 finalists for Iowa and 8 for PSU, and 7 titles for Iowa (4 different guys) and 5 for PSU (3 different guys). Take 141 out and it's pretty lopsided.

Actually, the only weights that PSU has been better at than Iowa since 2010 are 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184, 197, and HWT.

Thats always the question when discussing weights, light weight , middle weights, upper weights. 10 weights whats the consensus on what weight belongs where.

Name somebody not named Spencer in the past 8 years. Or name a weight above 125 in the past 8 years. Can't, but hey you made a point, didn't you.

If the kid wants to win a championship or two he is going to PSU.
Two can play this "game". In the past 7 years, name somebody not named RBY that has won a title at 125-133 for PSU. The answer is ZERO. Even with your take, Iowa still would have 1 with Clark. Still, getting past all that the results for Iowa at 125 and 133 DWARF PSU's. Yes, PSU dwarves Iowa above those weights, but what would that have to do with what is best for Nagao if he doesn't move up?

Even if we go back 13 years to a nice round number of the year 2010(the year Cael took over), you only sneak in 1 time with Megaludis. Even MORE telling RBY is the ONLY Finalist at 133 over that entire time period!

2010: Iowa-125-McD 1st, 133-Dennis 2nd------------------PSU-125-Pataky R12, 133-DNQ
2011: Iowa-125-McD 2nd, 133-Ramos R12------------------PSU-125-Pataky (1-2), 133-Long 3rd
2012: Iowa-125-McD 1st, 133-Ramos 3rd-------------------PSU-125-Mega 2nd, 133-Martellotti (1-2)
2013: Iowa-125-McD R12(inj), 133-Ramos 2nd------------PSU-125-Mega 2nd, 133-Conaway R12
2014: Iowa-125-Clark 5th, 133-Ramos 1st-----------------PSU-125-Mega 3rd, 133-Gulibon (1-2)
2015: Iowa-125-Gilman 4th, 133-Clark 2nd----------------PSU-125-Conaway 8th, 133-Gulibon 5th
2016: Iowa-125-Gilman 2nd, 133-Clark 2nd---------------PSU-125-Mega 1st, 133-Conaway 6th.
2017: Iowa-125-Gilman 3rd, 133-Clark 1st-----------------PSU-125-Suriano(0-2 inj.), 133-DNQ
2018: Iowa-125-Lee 1st, 133-DNQ---------------------------PSU-125-DNQ-133-Keener (1-2)
2019: Iowa-125-Lee 1st, 133-DeSanto-5th-----------------PSU-125-DNQ-133-RBY 8th
COVID: Iowa-125-Lee 1 seed, 133-DeSanto 6 seed------PSU-125-DNQ-133-RBY 5 seed
2021: Iowa-125-Lee 1st, 133-DeSanto-3rd-----------------PSU-125-Howard-(2-2), 133-RBY 1st
2022: Iowa-125-Ayala (1-2), 133-DeSanto-3rd------------PSU-125-Hildebrandt-(1-2), 133-RBY 1st
2023: Iowa-125-Lee 6th, 133-Teske-(1-2)-------------------PSU-125-DNQ, 133-RBY 2nd

So, that is 7 NCAA Titles to 3 for Iowa. On top of that, Iowa 6 more Finalists to PSU's 3. Going even further, Iowa had 4 3rds to PSU's 2.

Out of 26 chances, Iowa at least made the R12 23 times. Of those, 21 were AA's finishing 6th or higher. Iowa only had 1 DNQ.

Out of 26 chances, PSU at least made the R12 15 times. Of those, 12 were AA's wtih 2 8th place finishes. PSU had 6 DNQ's over that time frame...

Only 8 of 10?

The reality is, there are TONS of places guys can go to develop into a national champ.

List of Schools who have produced Champs other than PSU during Caels reign, the majority of them with multiple champs.

And since we're on the topic of 'lightweight' champs, I bolded the schools who have coached a 125/133/141 champ during that same timeframe.

-Iowa
-Ohio St.
-Minnesota
-Michigan
-Northwestern
-NC State
-UNC
-Northern Colorado
-Arizona St.
-Rutgers
-Oklahoma St.
-Oklahoma
-Iowa St.
-Stanford
-Cornell
-Princeton
-Lehigh
-Illinois
-Harvard
-Wisconsin
-Mizzou
-Nebraska
-Kent State
-Virginia Tech
-South Dakota State
-UNI
-Pitt

Certainly went a different direction for Aaron Pico. Kid would have been the real deal in NCAA.
Pico dislocated his shoulder early into his last fight or he’d be fighting for the Bellator title right now- he was on a long win streak. Either way he’s made a hell of a lot more fighting than he would have wrestling.

I suppose. To me he could have been legendary and he just disappeared.

At one point in time I think their options were more limited. You have training, coaching, MMA, and more. One thing we are not privy to with most guys is their health history. At some point many might opt for something a little easier on their body than the grind to win a world title of Olympic medal.

minidick on twitter is saying nagao might not be able to pass up the big bag iowa offered. this one is honestly hilarious because nagao clearly says in his interview with the psu spokesman that he isn’t transferring for money.

You’re naive if you don’t think it is a factor.

And as far as the high $$$ offer…good. We have the resources and it’s legal, so let’s use them.

agreed it is a great thing to have, but that’s not what i meant. i meant minidick is calling nagao a liar because this Twitter post specifically counters what he told basch.

sorry to bring up that scumbag.

the most important thing is i hope nagao comes to iowa. he would look great in black and gold and his top game would make a huge leap just like woods. the spencer effect is for real.
It has literally nothing to do with Spencer and everything to do with cash. His top game doesn’t need to make a leap. It’s amazing already. The rest could use some small adjustments.

The new normal with the transfer portal. Guy isn’t happy with the compensation he is getting at current school, enters portal, sees what other schools are willing to offer him, comes back to his current school and says match this and I’ll stay. Don’t and I’m gone.

I used to be more sympathetic, but this guy is a jerk who can’t be taken seriously. He has an obvious agenda, which is fine for a fan but not appealing for someone who wants to be taken seriously by the wrestling community.

I thought Nagao said he had four schools: Iowa, Cornell, PSU and Minnesota. When did ISU enter the mix?

This is how it works in business. It’s common the best way to get a promotion/raise is to go somewhere else. Which is crazy because the original company usually ends up paying more for the replacement. Why not pay the incumbent more and not have to mess with training and transitiin

I'm sure these 19 year old kids just love this grown man(?) speaking for them on social media. Its blatantly obvious he is searching for clicks with his anti hawk agenda. Unfortunately, a lot of Iowa fans can't help themselves but to engage with him.

I think because it's a net win when most stay without looking elsewhere combined with management thinking they'll learn a minimum to match vs ever overpaying to retain.

Additionally, management tend never to spend current dollars on the chance of one leaving for only a hypothetical benefit, especially if they see the reward vs risk as low.

Management also seems adept at rationalizing that a new hire will have newer skills and be able to bring in a fresh perspective.

IDK but they would be the clear worst choice compared to the other schools listed for a light weight to excel.
