What do you make of it?

Are we linking arms to show unity with our team? Is it to show solidarity with Colin Kapernick? Are we supporting the flag and what it stands for?

I think this whole thing is being muddled.

It's the "in" thing to do ... Give it a week or two and everyone will forget about it ... and many who participate really won't know why they did.

It's to show unity with all.

I've been a Packer fan since 1971. 15 years ago I watched every game every week, but over time I've lost interest in the NFL overall. Now I might watch the Packers but nothing else. I've played drop in hockey during the last 4 Super Bowls. This whole protest thing has effectively finished me off for good.

Found this picture of Bleeder on the interweb

Why aren't they showing unity for the thousands shot by their own? Why aren't they showing unity for the cops that were murdered (oh that's right the NFL was going to fine them for that).

Let's interlock middle fingers and show the NFL where they can go.

America can live without the NFL
The NFL can't live without America.

This whole thing has divided even the teams. It appears there is almost no true leadership in these locker rooms. The Steelers were so worried about it they forgot how to play football. Then Big Ben couldn't sleep that night because he was haunted by how they handled the anthem. This political bs from the left is even destroying sports now. The left realizes they don't have the outreach with the news anymore so they are spilling over to sports now too. As soon as this starts hitting the players pocket books I wonder just how dedicated they will be?

Please tell me how this is political BS from "the left". This was a fairly minor issue until Trump made those ridiculous comments last week. Now a majority of players are kneeling because they hate the president more or less.

I don't think I've ever seen a "does your president embarrass you" poll before this year lol

The valknut has to be considered in context, but one use is definitely by neo Nazis. It's an interesting conversation. Does this individual have the right to come here and express neo nazi views?

Absolutely. Doesn't mean I have to respect what he spouts though.

Defending our national anthem and calling out athletes that are supposed to be role models to our kids for disrespecting it, is not a rediculous comment. Period.

Do you think the president should be a role model for our children? Because I have never witnessed a more petty and thin skinned person in my entire life. And since when have we needed professional athletes to be role models for our children? Many of them have done very questionable things on and off the field. So to claim that Trump was finally standing up for our children is ridiculous.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather not have a bunch of children running around that hate America and think our country is fundamentally flawed. This is what many on the left want and believe. Maybe you do too.

The gesture is an extension of what Rodgers and several teammates did this past Sunday on the sideline, which he explained after the game was about “love over hate and unity over division.”

Shot be their own??? Isn't all Americans 'our own'? I love you racists. The people who are against this protest are all just racist hiding behind the guise of Patriotism.

Are you actually surprised? Look at the neo-nazi symbols in his user pic. He's very up front on his troglodyte racist views around here.
Looks like your herky is giving the hile hitler salute - you nazi lover you.

If you don't know the history of the symbols, don't speak - you sound like a fool.

I am fine with gestures of love over hate and unity over division but make then before, after but not during the national anthem.

SO you are inferring I am talking only about blacks - you can't hide your racism behind your patriotism very well Muskie.

I copied this from Hawkeye great Julian Vandervelde's FB page. If at least one of you 'get it', it will have been worth the effort.

For those who want to better understand what led to #taketheknee, this is the backstory:

Aug 14, 2016- Colin Kaepernick sits for the national anthem.....and no one noticed.

Aug 20, 2016- Colin again sits, and again, no one noticed.

Aug 26, 2016- Colin sits and this time he is met with a level of vitriol unseen against an athlete. Even the future President of the United States took shots at him while on the campaign trail. Colin went on to explain his protest had NOTHING to with the military, but he felt it hard to stand for a flag that didn't treat people of color fairly.

Aug 30, 2016- Nate Boyer, a former Army Green Beret turned NFL long snapper, penned an open letter to Colin in the Army Times. In it he expressed how Colin's sitting affected him.

Then a strange thing happened. Colin was able to do what most Americans to date have not...

He listened.

In his letter Mr. Boyer writes:
"I’m not judging you for standing up for what you believe in. It’s your inalienable right. What you are doing takes a lot of courage, and I’d be lying if I said I knew what it was like to walk around in your shoes. I’ve never had to deal with prejudice because of the color of my skin, and for me to say I can relate to what you’ve gone through is as ignorant as someone who’s never been in a combat zone telling me they understand what it’s like to go to war.

Even though my initial reaction to your protest was one of anger, I’m trying to listen to what you’re saying and why you’re doing it."

Mr. Boyer goes on to write "There are already plenty people fighting fire with fire, and it’s just not helping anyone or anything. So I’m just going to keep listening, with an open mind.

I look forward to the day you're inspired to once again stand during our national anthem. I'll be standing right there next to you."

Empathy and understanding was shown by Mr. Boyer.........and Mr. Kaepernick reciprocated. Colin invited Nate to San Diego where the two had a 90-minute discussion and Nate proposed Colin kneel instead of sit.

But why kneel? In a military funeral, after the flag is taken off the casket of the fallen military member, it is smartly folded 13 times and then presented to the parents, spouse or child of the fallen member by a fellow service member while KNEELING. The two decided that kneeling for the flag would symbolize his reverence for those that paid the ultimate sacrifice while still allowing Colin to peacefully protest the injustices he saw.

Empathy, not zealotry under the guise of patriotism, is the only way meaningful discussion can be had. Mr. Kaepernick listened to all of you that say he disrespects the military and extended an olive branch to find a peace.

By "shot by their own" he means black people shot by other black people. Predominantly black communities have a big violence problem (significantly more than white communities), and pointing this out is not racist. It's reality. Understand rubberband?

Thanks Muskie, formerly CM?

Yes it is racist. The fact that you and so many others don't understand that is one of the BIG problems we are having with this 'division'. And FYI, even believing their are different races (their isn't, there's one...human) makes one a racist.

I am guessing if you asked 50 NFL players what they were trying to demonstrate with the various actions - you would get 50 different answers. And secondly - I'll bet the majority of the responses would be incoherent. In other words - I doubt they even know what they want to see happen or what exactly "unity" means.

Play football - and if you think your so damn important (and smart) - quit football and go fix whatever you deem it is that needs fixing.

Are you saying the payday loan shark is taking the moral high ground? OH MY OH MY, next thing you know your gonna tell the meth dealer living down your block is vowing to protest going to NFL games. The travesty is just too much to handle
Libs can justify anything (so long as it doesn't have to do with the truth).

I'd respond to Aaron by asking if he would let the Vikings sweep the Packers then if he is wanting fans to do this.....

I'm noticing a theme here, some people try to take a thoughtful, reasoned approach at trying to explain why the protests are happening. Then those who don't agree with them immediately just shout "Liberal" and end the dialogue. This is not how we're going to resolve this issue. At least attempt to understand what the other side is saying before immediately resorting to political name calling

What they're doing is not disrespectful....................it's unnecessary.
