I'm a long time wrestling fan, have had season tickets since I was a kid, been to NCAA's 7x, Big 10's, Midlands etc blah blah blah.

I know folkstyle very well.

However, I know very little about freestyle. I have my tickets to AGON V, and cannot wait to see some of the great matchups. I would enjoy it more if I knew some of the differences, what to watch for etc.

Can any of you help a newbie freestyle fan?

Thank you in advance!

Here are the main differences:
- just prior to the match, freestyle wrestlers are frisked for weapons by the refs; folkstyle has an honor system - guns and knifes are left at home.
- in folkstyle the crowd will either boo or cheer - sometimes both; in freestyle fans look at each other and ask "what happened?"
Other than that, they are the same.

and ties aren't really ties...so even though the score is tied...there usually is a winner and a loser...sometimes they grab balls (hopefully their own and not their opponents, NTTIAWWT)

I was thinking the undercard/ future Hawkeyes would wrestle folk and the pros wrestle freestyle. No clue though. Can't wait to be there with the family!

Did I read somewhere that the AGON matches are a crossbreed?
Nope, it should be all freestyle. No hybrid, so these matches actually count for something.

Pretty sure the high school guys are wrestling free as well, at least that is the impression I got when the Mejia match was first announced.

RULES FOR AGON WC ARE GOVERNED BY OFFICIAL FREESTYLE RULES OF UNITED WORLD WRESTLING

- BOUT CONSISTS OF TWO THREE MINUTE PERIODS WITH 30 SECOND BREAK BETWEEN PERIODS
- WINNER IS DECLARED BY ADDITION OF POINTS AT THE END OF REGULAR TIME
- EVIDENT TECHNICAL SUPERIORITY OF 10 POINTS AUTOMATICALLY LEADS TO VICTORY AND TO END OF THE BOUT
- FOR MORE INFORMATION ON RULES PLEASE SEE FOLLOWING LINK

Spicolli,

I believe those are the old rules for Freeco (before the FILA update a few years ago). I believe that TD's are now worth 2pts and technical superiority (tech fall) is achieved when you have a 10pt lead. Also don't have to win 2 out of 3 periods anymore, it's cumulative scoring in both periods.

Oh, so it is exactly like folkstyle in that regard?
