I was looking up images of AJ and noticed some images of him on the Basketball team. How good is he basketball wise? I know our school and coaches do not have the guts, or imagination to have a player play both basketball and Football, OSU did with David Boston. Just curious how he is at basketball. and yes it would be interesting to see Wagner play WR or TE for football. but like I said our school and coaches just do not have that kind of mentality.

Last time I checked he averaged 15 points 11 rebounds a game that was awhile back like midway through the season or it was AAU stats.

Also was number one in the state at the shot put,
0r however you spell it.

His team's ranked #2 in the state of Illinois. They have at least one other guy on the team who's going D1 - in basketball.

I'd imagine he's ready to start focusing on the sport that's gonna be paying him millions!

One of our best ever fball recruits and you want him worrying about bball? lol

Sadly, OP, there was a time--now long past--when AJ would have played both football and basketball at Iowa. But with every sport going 13 months a year and the schedules getting longer and longer, it's just plain impossible these days. But it would be lots of fun to see.

Yes, 13 months a year. And that's NOT fake news. It's just the new reality. :(

Hes going to be way to heavy to play basketball at the college level.

Have you seen Kennedy Meeks from UNC or that dude from TX a couple years ago. They easily pushed 300. But yes, he is a good basketball player (over 1000 points), but I think if he does 2 sports in college, it would be football and track. He is a 200+ foot discus thrower with pure power. If he concentrated solely on that, he could easily be an AA at Iowa and maybe an Olympian, he is that good at discus.

Doyle will get him up to 300 pretty quickly.

Meeks is listed at 6'10 260, thats a big difference from 6'5 280+

Not saying hes overweight but thats to much mass for basketball conditioning, especially the way Iowa plays.

If David Boston did play basketball at OSU, and I don't think he actually did, he put up zero stats so that's a terrible example. Julius Peppers would have been a much better one.

I was mostly wanting info on if he was a decent basketball player. so thanks for the info. the rest of my post was only if AJ or Wagner would even want to do that. and some venting on the lack of imagination our programs/coaches have at times.

Sorry I thought for sure David Boston played forward for OSU. Am i mistaken, didn't a FSU QB also play basketball for FSU.

Good Lord, what next to rail on the coaches about? KF recruited AJ to play football at Iowa. It not his job to find other activities for him with what little free time he'll have. Can you possibly imagine the shit storm on this board if KF was OK with our once in a generation talented DE playing basketball on the side, and he tore an ACL or something? The things that get posted on here sometimes are mind boggling!

It was Ricky Dudley you were thinking of, played tight end for the Raiders I believe.

Wagner would be a fantastic receiver for most coaches but he would probably be wasted on Ferentz for lack of blocking ability.

Iowa actually had a guy in the 70's who after football season played I think his senior year some basketball after football, one of those "we're running out of players" type things where they needed him to play badly.

Nate Washington?

Matt Szykowney and 1960's

I checked out the 1973 football and 73-74 basketball roster. There's a DL named Nate Washington on the football roster, same name on basketball roster. Basketball stats, 7 ppg, just short of 5 rpg.

That would be a heckuva coincidence if it ain't the same person. Iowa played 24 games, "Nate" played 22 - which kinda sounds just about right for season timeframes back then.

The reason I remember this is I remember a game at home against Purdue that was a high scoring game, and looking it up, Iowa won 112-111. I remember reading about it in the CR Gazette the next morning, Nate had a big game that day.

Weird, what a person remembers out of an 8-16 season 40+ years ago. I remember Iowa going to #1 UCLA in January that year, for some reason I think Walton was on that team but was injured and Ralph Drollinger played instead.

Szykowney was before my time...

Iowa ever had a DE or DL able to do this? Even a LB?

A lot of D1 big guys can dunk. Ballard and Clayborn could throw down. What stands out it the explosiveness of his movement. He looks like a mountain lion out there. If he can be a Clowney type talent at DE it is going to be fun to watch.

That was what i meant. The explosiveness and athleticism is probably something iowa has never seen by someone who plays with their hand on the ground

Thanks for dating me. Szykowney was a quarterback. I think 4 starters failed grades and left Don Nelson as the lone starter.
