Alford to Nevada

And Nevada had a good season this year. Are they seeking failure? Who would give Steve Alford a recommendation. They'd hang him in Westwood, or West Des Moines for that matter.

Very beautiful area up there in northern Nevada. Alford might do okay at a place like UN. I think he is running out of chances though. If he doesn't cut it up there you probably see him next behind a microphone.

The word was that his players at UCLA could not stand him and wanted him gone. They got him fired just like NHL players do by essentially quitting until the losses mounted and the firing went down.

This guy is a big fake and a Bible thumping fraud. If they liked Eric Mussellman (I do), in Reno, they will really come to loath the feather haired, Hoosier fake. I am not sure Bobby Knight even liked him.

Alford is a “special” kind of horrible person. Probably in the top .0001% of human beings on earth. He’s worse than the poor souls who are lifetime criminals because they are too mentally sick/grew up around violence and extreme poverty.

I’d honestly rather have OJ Simpson be my kid’s coach and mentor than this monster.

Funny how this seems to be the opinion where ever he goes. Granted I don't know much about his time at New Mexico because I really didn't pay attention. I do remember those idiots from the Lobo board coming here to defend him at every turn and that he really screwed them with the UCLA deal.

I don't care for Alford either but some of this is kinda, should I say, stupid

I think Boy Wonder will do well at Nevada. Less competition on a weekly basis. He couldn't make it at Iowa or UCLA despite Iowa giving him about 9 years to learn on the job ...

Steve Alford was a jerk. I personally new one of his players and he once told me players either loved him or they were put off by him after awhile. The Alford years were a bit of a mixed bag. They were highly entertaining with lots of highs at times (B1G Tourney runs). Then we had the underperforming teams and early exits from the NCAA. His personality wasn't a good fit for the people of Iowa. Of the three past coaches I do believe Alford accomplished the most slightly beating Fran out because of his B1G tourney wins. Those were some fun tournaments to watch. However he was a jerk and Iowa fans dont put up with his type very long.

Others might disagree, but I think that is a good fit for Alford. He is just not a power 5 conference coach, but has shown he can win a lot of games at the mid-major level.

I see him doing just fine at Nevada and am curious if he brings on Craig Neal as an assistant.

Alfords hiring by the U of Nevada as their head coach appears imminent.

I met Boy Wonder a few times when I was on the Polk County I Club board. He pretty much is exactly what you are probably thinking he is: All about Steve ... He'll do fine at Nevada ... if they can tolerate the Boy Wonder attitude and everything that comes with it.

I never had any problems with Steve in the time he was in Iowa City. He lived a few blocks from me so we'd cross paths from time to time. I understood he's got a bit of an ego and was totally opposite of Dr. Tom... but in talking with him he was very personable and humble. I often stated then and still do now... a lot of Steve's problems come from being thrust upon a pedestal as a young person playing basketball and being treated like a God in the state of Indiana.

Thanks for sharing ... and yeah, would be tough because he WAS Mr. Indiana ...

I don't care for him at all, but I do have to give him a bit of credit. After cutting down the net at the United Center in 2001 he let us, Cheerleaders, Herky, and Pep Band, cut down the other net. No TV cameras running, only a thousand or so fans left in the arena, and he personally came over to thank us for our hard work over the four days before offering the other net to us. I still have a piece of that net.

But as they say the true tale of your character is how you behave when things aren't going well. And in that vein Steve wasn't good. Nothing was ever his fault, the players always didn't work hard enough or make enough shots. He never took responsibility for assembling a sub-par staff when he came to Iowa. And it almost sickens me that the great 2006 season, and the careers of some greats like Brunner and Horner, ended like it did in the tourney. As great of a player as Brunner was throughout his college career, the way it ended really detracts from many people's opinion of what he accomplished. And that really is Alford's fault for not doing everything possible to stop that collapse that should have never occurred.

I have always hoped he would end up somewhere that would require him to come to Carver. If it happens I will be there and will be booing so much and loud you will think I'm an Iowa St fan.

I know everyone around here hates Steve but I think he will be quite successful at Nevada. Will probably be getting big Time offers in 2 or 3 years. He needs to go out and find some players asap though because the cupboard is pretty bare for next season.

You should share stories with the big I Club donors and activists, the Iowa HS coaching community and the Iowa AAU coaches. You'll find your opinion is in a distinct and small minority.

For example, one of his overreaching demands was for "dry" I Club events when he was present. Even the face man Bowlsby knew that wouldn't fly.

Alford is 54 years old and said that this will actually
be his last coaching job. Thus, the 10 year contract.
He is excited to be with such a strong program at Nevada.
