Alford to Nevada

I don't care for Alford either but some of this is kinda, should I say, stupid
Absolutely not. He is a heartless narcissist. You can’t get much lower than using faith as a weapon to obstruct justice and try to browbeat a rape victim into not pressing charges—see the Boyd report. Hiding behind Jesus because it might save your player. That poor girl on the basketball team was further traumatized.

He also intimated Pierce was a victim too and “grew from this.” He ignored the attempted rape of Pat Harty niece and called Harty an enemy of the program. He didn’t pay for goods and services provided for him.

The OJ comparison was mostly hyperbole, obviously, but he sure as hell would be less miserable to be around for 4 hours a day for 4 years.

I never had any problems with Steve in the time he was in Iowa City. He lived a few blocks from me so we'd cross paths from time to time. I understood he's got a bit of an ego and was totally opposite of Dr. Tom... but in talking with him he was very personable and humble. I often stated then and still do now... a lot of Steve's problems come from being thrust upon a pedestal as a young person playing basketball and being treated like a God in the state of Indiana.

I don't care for him at all, but I do have to give him a bit of credit. After cutting down the net at the United Center in 2001 he let us, Cheerleaders, Herky, and Pep Band, cut down the other net. No TV cameras running, only a thousand or so fans left in the arena, and he personally came over to thank us for our hard work over the four days before offering the other net to us. I still have a piece of that net.

But as they say the true tale of your character is how you behave when things aren't going well. And in that vein Steve wasn't good. Nothing was ever his fault, the players always didn't work hard enough or make enough shots. He never took responsibility for assembling a sub-par staff when he came to Iowa. And it almost sickens me that the great 2006 season, and the careers of some greats like Brunner and Horner, ended like it did in the tourney. As great of a player as Brunner was throughout his college career, the way it ended really detracts from many people's opinion of what he accomplished. And that really is Alford's fault for not doing everything possible to stop that collapse that should have never occurred.

I know a lot of people who encountered Alford during his years here. Not everything I heard was awful or anything, but these 2 posts contain literally the only nice things I’ve ever heard about him.

Humble? LOL, no.

Keep in mind, my story is from 2001 before it all came crashing down. At that point he was the good hire and we all were wondering when Ferentz was going to get fired after 4 wins combined in two seasons, 2000-2001 had a sold out CHA for every game, and it was packed with butts in the seats for pretty much all of them as opposed to empty seats sold. WBB had just fired a Big Ten championship winning coach in Angie Lee and replaced her with a coach from Drake (Bluder). And wrestling had recently replaced a legend with Zalesky who was never going to succeed long term. Alford was the face of the athletic department much like Ferentz is today.

We all attributed the 2001 end of season collapse to the Recker and Hogan injuries and the BTT championship cleansed the bad thoughts away for us. The following season with a preseason top 10 team and 2 All American candidates that ended up in the NIT was the first sign that people recognized of Steve’s coaching limitations. Then the Pierce incident a couple years later was the early beginning of the end.

They say, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" - certainly not true on HR.

I dislike Alford. I think he is arrogant and won't accept that anything is his fault. The PP situation is the headliner, of course, but there are many examples of his personality that have been shared here.

But, Jebus, the guy is not a monster. He's an unlikable, average coach that plays off his fame. Big deal.

All I can say is I’m 100x happier to have Fran than the 10 year contract of Alford today.
Fran may have a temperament when fighting for his players, but Alford has repeatedly demonstrated he is for himself first, second and third.

Nevada is going to need to buy its athletics department an extra bus, for when Alford throws his players under it.

Funny how this seems to be the opinion where ever he goes. Granted I don't know much about his time at New Mexico because I really didn't pay attention. I do remember those idiots from the Lobo board coming here to defend him at every turn and that he really screwed them with the UCLA deal.

My uncle was on the hiring committee at UNM which hired Alford and has a parking place outside The Pit with his name on it. Pretty big booster of UNM basketball. We had lots of interesting discussions regarding Alford. DUring interviews, Alford claimed to have "learned a lot of lessons" from his time in IC and told UNM that he'd grow from those experiences. Said that Iowa was a different environment from that he was accustomed - lots of focus on football. Said that he'd do things differently with benefit of hindsight. My uncle claimed that he came off as genuine and, while Alford was the coach there, liked to remind me about how well Alford was doing and how much the fan base loved him. He was extremely popular all the way up to . . . the press conference in Westwood. My uncle doesn't like to talk about it anymore.

I can't stand Alford and I don't wish him any success but I'm anticipating that he'll do well in that conference. Admission standards are likely more lax than Pac 12 and B1G which will allow him access to some talent that wouldn't normally land in either conference. That written . . . any success in the NCAA tournament will be fleeting and consistent with prior performance. Since leaving SMS, his teams have consistently underachieved.

As much as I hate to say it I always felt like Alford was a good fit at UNM and would have continued to have success there and agree at Iowa's expense he benefited at becoming a better coach. He was the big fish in a small pond at a school as you allude to cares a lot more about bball than football just as he preferred. But of course his ego couldn't keep him away from UCLA and ruined a good thing he had going at UNM. I think he will win but won't be as successful as he was at New Mexico.

I wonder if he could talk Noodles into coming back to coach for him?

Alford is 54 years old and said that this will actually
be his last coaching job. Thus, the 10 year contract.
He is excited to be with such a strong program at Nevada.

Do you actually believe a coach's contract is worth the paper it printed on and that Steve won't be inclined to jump if a bigger name comes calling?

Didn't Alford agree to a 10 year deal less than a week before he took the UCLA job? I think the only way he got of it was he technically hadn't officially signed it yet.

He also said he wasn't leaving UNM about 2 days before he left UNM.

No excuses at Nevada. The Mountain West is tough but Nevada have been proven winners in the past. He has thrived in mid major environments. Not so much when the xs and os force you to win games that your recruits can't.

Ouch. Sounds like a Nebby or IA State contract.
His first contract at Iowa, back in 1999, was about $900k per year after adding in camps, shoe/broadcast contracts, incentives, etc. and would be worth $1.5MM today annually adjusting for inflation. Can't be good for his ego to sign a contract with an average of $1.16MM per year 20 years later. Not to mention being fired as an abject failure at UCLA too, the first mid-season firing UCLA ever did in the basketball program.

I would gladly take that hit to my ego for the remainder of his contract.

My god, how coddled these prima donnas are...

It's crazy to think that over the last 23 years universities have been paying the Fraud close to / at least $1,000,000 a year.

For 6 seasons, UCLA was paying him $2.5M/year.

Earnings over the last 23 years:
..$7,450,000: 8 years, 2000-2007 (IOWA)
..$5,805,000: 6 years, 2008-2013 (New Mexico)
$15,000,000: 6 years, 2014-2019 (UCLA)
..$3,480,000: 3 years, 2020-2022 (Nevada)
.....................................................................
$31,735,000 TOTAL
===================================

A look at the last 23 years:

In March 1999, Iowa hired Alfraud to a 5 year contract.

--Base: $350,000

--With camps, shoe-and-clothing contracts and broadcasting contracts, that # could swell to about $600,000.

--Additional, incremental incentives would have put Alford in the $900,000/year range

he found his correct spot in New Mexico, but his Ego made him think he was UCLA material.
Also had to be a blow to his ego when IU was passed up by many of their top choices forcing them to settle for the 63 yr old alum Mike Woodson who hadn't been a HC in 7 years and never coached in college. Makes me wonder how many people would've had to pass on IU job for the golden boy to ever be considered. The one job he always wanted he could never get. But totally agree NM was perfect place for him. Mid major where b-ball was the top sport at the school.

Didn't Iowa look at that 5* center transfer from Texas that plays for them? Wonder what he thinks of that decision now. 🤔

Crazy extreme hatred preferring a murderer to SA ...not really rational...he is not Hitler. A jerk?Yes, but not a mass murderer.

Not a mass murderer but enabled, defended, and advocated for a sexual predator. The Pierre Pierce saga is the darkest stain on Iowa's legacy in ANY sport.
