Four in the morning and my phone starts making that sound that they do on tv for the warning system. It's an amber alert. I mean I get it, but wouldn't a text suffice, as opposed to this foghorn waking me up? I mean if I'm awake, I'll know I've received a text. If I'm sleeping it's not like I can do anything, so isn't the sole purpose to wake me up? This happen to anyone else or is just my provider, T mobile?

Some how you can shut this off, seems like every few months I google how to do it, get it to stop and then it randomly comes back. Annoying as hell.

I have US Cellular and the same thing happened.Scared the shit out of me never did get back to sleep.

Verizon customer did the same thing. I thought our alarm in our house was going off cause my phone and wife's went off at the same time!

And of course all that noise woke the baby, so Ive been up since 4 in the morning as well. I agree a Text Message would do just fine, no need for these alerts.

hmm... I only got the text. That said, my phone is always on vibrate, so perhaps that's why I didn't get the loud siren sound.

Yup, Verizon customer.i had mine on vibrate but the buzzing woke me up.

Jefferson, IA I think

Taken from Jefferson and found in Des Moines. I get the point of the alert, however I have a huge day today and am exhausted now. Couldn't get back to sleep. Gonna pound SF red bulls till 9pm. A beep with the text would suffice imo.

Both our phones went crazy. I thought the fire alarm was going off.

Both Mrs. Lucas and I were woken up by our phones going off. I offered a way to fill the time since we were both up, but didn't find a taker.
I wondered if this is geographical, or what? Obviously it's set up by law enforcement, but, what radius? I am not opposed to the information received. A missing child is worth a wake up to me. But, it seems random and inefficient at that time of the day.

This is the first thing we talked about at work this morning. I assume tens of thousands of people were awoken at 4 am by this.

Count my wife and I as two of the many that got the same obnoxious message at 4:00A. I then read at about 6:30A that they already found the kids. Do we really need a system that freaks out at 4:00A?

Send a normal text, no matter what time of day.

I think this assumption is quite correct, it scared the hell out of me. Thought it was some kind of fire alarm at first.

Woke us up as well. My wife (no pic) fell back asleep. I couldn't get back to sleep. Finally got out of bed at 4:45 and worked for a few hours.

Bunch of selfish assholes in here
What is the point of sending the siren? Were we supposed to assemble a posse and head out to find this car? Otherwise I don't understand why a text couldn't be sent for when we get up in the morning and check our phones, as most do.

So why not shut your phone off if you don't want anything to wake you?
I should shut my phone off because a contrived emergency should outweigh a real one? As it happens, my father is in the hospital at the moment. You are suggesting that I should turn my phone off, and potentially miss an emergency call, because I don't need a siren going off about something I can do nothing about. What purpose does it serve for people who are sleeping to be awoken for something like this? Not only awoken but panicked about it, as I was. Judgement was lacking in this thing, especially considering that it was a (divorced) mother mad because her kids weren't back on time, as it turns out. They were found two hours later. Wake up thousands of people for that?

I know for me my phone is also my alarm clock, so I cannot turn it off or silence it. I don't get calls or text in the middle of the night, so it's not a problem I have often. The Amber Alert is very obnoxious, a simple beep with that text would suffice. As someone mentioned before I'm not organizing a search party at 4am to go look, and anyone awake will get the message on their phone when they look at it. No need for the alert they use now.

Well you can't seem to handle the concept of shutting off the alerts themselves
This should be an opt out? Shouldn't it be an opt in? Like almost everyone in this thread, I had no idea it existed in the first place. Congrats on you prescience.

I agree that it was annoying...but you know what, deal with it. If it saves one kid, it's worth all of us losing an hour of sleep...even me.

I won't be getting an iPhone anytime soon. I'm sure my phone has the same function and I'm to stupid to find it.

If I'm driving along and see the truck fine. I doubt I'll see it at 4 am when I'm asleep, however. Again, what should I have done? Am I a volunteer child finder all the sudden? Why can't the professionals handle it, as they did? Why do I have to go to the trouble to not receive these alerts? Why don't all you do gooders opt in, save us all the exhaustion. You can jump in your car and go find the perp, Mr. Zimmerman.

For iPhone...Under settings, open notifications, then under Government Alerts slide Amber Alerts off.

Likeliest scenario, but here is a more fun solution: go on hrot and complain, multiple times, rather than figure it out.

I thought you had a HUGE!!!!!11! day today? What are you doing posting on here now? Better hurry up and get to the store for another six pack of Sugar Free (look how healthy I am!) Red Bulls so you can continue on with your HUGE DAY that was basically ruined by an amber alert.

Trying too hard. You're doing it.

Actually the sugar free tastes better, all red bull is horrible for you. And I do have a huge day as well as a very busy next 4 days. Up at 4am and won't be in bed till at least 1 am. Back up at 6. My job requires no manual labor, however I need a sharp mind. Lack of sleep doesn't help that.

I think it is fairly unusual for an Amber alert to go off at 4am, at least I don't remember seeing on that time of early morning. The tornado warnings can be equally annoying but I think it is great they can send these alerts. If a child gets rescued from some creep then I don't care if someone lost a few hours of sleep.

I wonder how long it will take some hacker to send out pron to everyone's cell phone in the country all at once via the amber alert system.

Agreed. It can be a little annoying, but it's rare. I'd hate to miss one about a tornado warning because I turned off the settings. And, if there is a .05 percent chance the alert helps find an abducted child I'm okay with it
