Analysis: Is Iowa good enough Defensively to win a National Championship? On March14, Per KenPom: Offensive efficiency: #2; Defensive efficiency: #50

Interestingly enough, Iowa’s overall DE is better than the Buckeyes at the moment. Likely a high scoring game between the two on Sunday..

Ohio State scored 89 in their win over the Hawks on the 4th.Hopefully the Hawks can keep Michigan / Ohio St under 80. We'll see if more man to man is the miracle cure.
This is such a huge week for the Hawks. Right now we are a projected #2 seed and will be playing two projected #1 seeds on the road.

Like @TheTruthTheWholeTruth said above; these will be like Elite 8/Final 4 type match ups.

Does Kenpom at the end of the day ever mean shit? Ever?

Actually, he/it does, if you want to win a National Championship.

From the Sep 23 original post:

* On average, teams that win the national title rank in the top ten of adjusted offensive efficiency and the top 15 of adjusted defensive efficiency entering the tournament.

* Last year was the first time since the 2016 fade that the Hawkeyes had finished in the top 100 of adjusted defensive efficiency.

those are just associations, not causations, even he will tell you that. The most important thing is your overall rank/rating. That is what predicts the wins and losses in the tournament. It is just that most elite teams tend to be great on both ends of the floor. It is possible to be so completely dominant one on end you can be far less impressive on the other.

Hey, I am all for winning a national championship with the 74th best defense ;)

IMO, if you want to beat a Gonzaga, a Baylor, a Michigan, etc, you are gonna have to get stops. When we played Gonzaga, we simply could not do that. When you score 88 points you'd think you would win. Not when you give up 99 :(

Generally yes, but UVA recently won a championship with a stifling defense and a 'meh' offense. Iowa is basically the reverse of this, but the defense has improved over the past couple of weeks to the point where the "luck" factor won't be as significant (and Iowa tends to be below-average to piss-poor luck-wise and that goes for all sports)

You might want to check your numbers. Virginia was elite on offense the year they won it all.

Yes. I still feel this team doesn't guard well enough to win it all, but would love to be proven wrong and that a team can basically outscore their way to a title.

This team's ceiling? A run to the Elite 8, sure. Final Four? Maybe. Winning the FF once you get there? That's another matter entirely. All depends on match ups, though. I remember MSU winning that title in 2000, and other than MSU, the other teams were two 8 seeds and a 5 seed. Probably the softest Final Four I've ever seen. Can't count on that - you're probably going to have to beat a 1 seed, if not two, in the FF to win it all. Need to be able to get a few stops to pull that off.

Per sports-reference.com

UVA was 1st in the nation defensively (~56 PPG given up)
UVA was 210th in the nation offensively (~71 PPG scored)

I don't think that qualifies as 'elite'.

LOL

2019 Virginia was #2 nationally in OFFENSIVE efficiency on KenPom and #5 on defense.

They were better on offense than defense, they just played at an insanely slow pace.

The real question is.......where can we get one of those oversized foam fingers with a 74 on it?

We're #74, we're #74, Woo!

i think small sample sizes should not change your opinion much at all as they can be drastically influenced by luck.

My opinion of defense (and to some degree offense) is mostly based off the quality of shots attempted. It really doesn't matter if they go in or not. You can play great defense and your opponent simply makes shots. There is no defense for that. But at least you can make sure those shots aren't a bunch of dunks/layups and wide open 3s.

both are so correct, wide open catch and shoot turn ordinary guys into CJF-type shooters...

and M2M also provide much better rebounding accountability

KenPom had them as the 5th most efficient offense.
