And So It Begins

I believe Tom Kakert or perhaps the Gazette had an interview with Dailey after the first PTL game.

Bottom line is Dailey said he has grown to almost 6'8".

It sure looks like he did.

I almost hate to do this, but I was high on Williams before he committed, when he committed, and all through his freshman season. And I know he didn't produce last year, and was passed by Jordan. (My goodness...caught myself after typing Gordy...I'm getting old!!!) But dang it I think Williams can at least be a very good back up to Bohannon and maybe better than the avg. Big Ten backup, though a backup is were he should stay as good as JBo is.

If after surviving the trials of it sure not looking like it...Christian has a breakout year, what does that do for the potential of a 6'8" Dailey battling for minutes in the wings?

I too had high hopes for CW but watching him last year what exactly does he do well outside of getting in the passing lanes with his length? I believe Dailey can do anything CW can do and more. Better shooter and has better feel for the game. Has size and length.

I hope they both develop excellent games. I am just not done thinking Williams could have two great years as a Hawkeye. I'm not trying to convince anyone so no..no scouting report. We've all watched Williams for two years now.

My observation: Williams is at his best when leading a break. He looks more fluid and is good at getting all the way to rim. However, In half court sets he seems excessively hesitant (or overly cautious) and he doesn't show much skill handling the basketball with a defender right on him. He is very good at running the floor but not quick with a dribble.

His first year left me thinking that he just needed to develop more confidence, relax, and the improvement would come. Now I'm beginning to believe that he may not have the natural PG skills or instincts you see at this level. My recollection is that he played quite a bit at Forward in high school (or am I confusing him with Dailey?) which would explain the difference you see between him and, for instance, Jordan Bohannon.

I hope Christian takes a big step forward this year. He is the man if JB goes down.

Both Dailey and Williams played off the ball. Both have the assets to be fine combo guards. Williams just hasn't put it together yet, and for that matter Dailey is "ahead' of Williams in only one way, he hasn't played much yet to be measured.

The back is my main concern with Williams. Seemed to be a problem several times last year.

DL you are correct that Dailey has not had the minutes to be scrutinized but in limited minutes he showed a broader range of skills. The fact that CW cannot shoot a lick outside maybe 14-15 feet is a huge issue for a PG. He's a terrible FT shooter. He's not a break you down off the dribble guy either. I just do not see it with him. The other night in the PTL compare the offensive numbers between him and Dailey. Yes it's the PTL but you'd think CW would score more than 9 points!

Dailey can handle, pass and shoot it. He has a much better feel for the game. He also provides similar length and greater size along with good lateral quickness to defend. Yes he's probably a combo guard but I'd rather see him on the floor backing up JB than CW.

How is there going to be a radical transformation in CWs shooting and play in one off-season? Man I hope so.

I'm not going to try to persuade you with any points on this. Like I said, and I knew, I probably shouldn't have said anything to begin with. Call it a gut feeling. I'll go out on a lib once in awhile...don't expect to me explain why...I just have that feeling that Williams puts his nerves aside and starts playing in 2017/18 like he's capable of playing.

I hope you are right! We really need both CW & MD to step it up this year if we are going to contend. We need guard players for certain. I know this is only game 1 of PTL, however Tom made it sound like Dailey had something going on, but Williams was rather lethargic(back issues??)...

It will be interesting to follow Maishe and his playing with Garza this summer. I would like those two to get very familiar with each other. Develop a nice pick and roll, and feed off of each. I have a feeling they will be playing a lot of minutes together.

take one look at the Indiana replay at home last year and one would never question whether CW has the capability of being an effective player in the rotation. By the way in this same game Mr JBo was not so good...in fact Fran put him on the bench more than once. We dont win that game without the efforts of CW.

now doing it a handful of games doesnt cut it...I'm going to assume being consistent will be part of what Fran will be looking for. Course JBo will put up impressive offensive numbers...the game is played on both ends. CW involvement in trapping & his role in pressure defense 3/4 or even half court is also effective. Course those efforts dont show up in the box score. Thus we get some of the Woody is a Bust syndrome.

JBo played well into 20 minutes per game...plenty of minutes to make up for mistakes or getting beat on the 'other' end.
CW played less than 15 ...not so much time to play make up...this is not a knock on either player. CW can helps us win..its just not easy playing less minutes. For the record I thought the minutes distribution last year was fair.

I do agree that was a nice game. Dailey at 6'8" with similar length and quickness may be as effective on the 3/4 court press given those same minutes. CW also had a series of games where he missed easy layups after breaking away on steals or was fouled missing both FTs which is an effective turnover that does not show up in the stats as a turnover. I'm pretty certain we lost some of those games in a close fashion and those were critical plays in the flow of the game.

Again there are so many holes in his game that Dailey offers skills for already. I wish I had your optimism on a CW bounce back and skills improvement (shooting the ball). If that happens more the better for us but iit wiill be effectively wasting minutes that could be very costly. It's the PTL only but I need to see some offense, outside shooting and assists to elevate this hope proclamation.

I can understand your point. I'm not really much into comparing one Hawkeye to another. Especially when one of them basically played a small amount of minutes. I like the potential of Dailey alot but will wait til fall. Shooting the ball is one aspect. I think we all agree that we lost plenty of games on the other end of the floor.

I know the offensive box score is the determining factor for some. I'm all for the final score...we need balance on both ends. We are not always going to out score & out shoot our opponents. If Dailey can play both ends better than CW...so be it.

Is dailey really 6'8 now? Would love to see that confirmed now.

If so, that is really long to be a pg as a few have mentioned they thought he might be a good back-up.

Just so you understand, and you probably do anyway, when I express my gut feelings on Christian putting it all together this year, I have nothing to back that up. Just something that I've felt about the kid since his days in Decatur. He missed half of his senior season due to transfer issues. His first season at Iowa he was behind Gesell and Clemmons.

I take some hope from him starting until Bohannon took the job last year...and that perhaps the back issues slowed down Christian's development as well.

I have no issues with either Dailey or Williams ending up as Bohannon's backup. In fact, I prefer they both become challengers for minutes at the 1, 2, and 3!

I've probably got two background type reasons that sway my thoughts...cause this feeling I get that Williams will turn out a good player. 1) I've seen guys put their games together later than others. So, I know it happens. 2) I'm rooting for the kid ike I do all the Iowa guys...and I admit I'm biased towards wishing for success for all of them.
