Another Commit Tonight 6/26

Smith is a hawkeye it looks like. How many WR's are we taking? Wish we had more scholarships available for 2017

No doubt. In on a lot of great athletes. Wouldn't mind taking more commitments than we have room for. Rarely am a fan but Iowa needs to capitalize on the combination of last year's success and Eno Benjamin's contagious personality. Always have a few leave in the spring and next year will be no different.

I think we only have 5 or 6 spots left right now for the class yet it feels like we are in good position on 10+ guys. Hopefully we can get some of the bigger fish

Mississippi wide receiver Brandon Smith is headed to Iowa.

This weekend was the first visit to Iowa City for wide receiver Brandon Smith, but the Mississippi native says he quickly felt right at home. That is why before leaving town, the 6-foot-3, 198-pound Smith decided not to wait around and gave his verbal commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes today.

“With a lot of thought and consideration, I know would like to announce I have officially committed to the University of Iowa,” Smith said, in part, in a statement on Twitter.

A three-star prospect, Smith traveled up to Iowa with his family to attend the Hawkeye Tailgater with several other recruits on Saturday and then stuck around to attend a one-day camp with the Iowa coaching staff on Sunday.

“Camp went great,” Smith told HawkeyeReport.com. “The coaches really liked me. They like how big I am and how I catch the ball naturally.”

As a junior, Smith used those skills to rack up 78 catches for 1,382 yards and 16 touchdowns at Lake Cormorant High School in Mississippi. That type of production led to scholarship offers from Iowa, Memphis, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas State, and Toledo, among others.

With assistant coach Kelvin Bell, a Mississippi native who played football at Iowa, as his lead recruiter for the Hawkeyes, the Big Ten school quickly emerged as the team to beat and has now secured his commitment.

“It feels great,” said Smith. “I can't wait to become a Hawkeye.”

See highlights from Smith’s junior year at Lake Cormorant in the video below.

Blair, seems like Kelvin Bell is really making a solid difference with recruits. Brandon does look physically developed to have a decent chance as playing as a true freshman.

My guess would be 3. I think Holmes will commit fairly soon, Eno mentioned yesterday that something would be happening on Monday so maybe Holmes will commit then. So that'll leave 1 left, sounds like Maurice Bell is going to Colorado. Only other notable WR's that we've offered that I can think of are Camron Buckley and Oliver Martin.

Some are also predicting Shamond Greenwood to the Hawks. He's a solid 3 star with reported sub 4.45 speed.

There is a post in the Lounge that Brandon Smith just committed.

You are correct. Hawks will likely be in a better spot with more good players than they have in years. Losing a few of the guys lower on the depth chart this spring/summer has not been a huge negative. Hawks need to oversign by a few with this class.

Both look to be great commits. Hard to tell because the film is a highlight and not a lowlight reel, but Brandon looks like he's got great speed and a great frame to develop. Harrel has great ball skills and will be one of our faster players should he make it to Iowa.

Great to have you with us Brandon! You made a tremendous choice for your future! I love your height at the WR position. Can't wait to watch you performing on the field wearing the Black & Gold!

Questions for Blair: How many do you think the coaches will take in this class? I'm assuming they want to take 2 more receivers, 2 more defensive backs/corners, and a defensive lineman? What do you think the chances are that Calloway, Buckley, and Damion Daniels all commit to the Hawks?
Thanks for all the great work!

Kid looks like he could physically play this year. Apparently the kid can get up as well. Great to get a kid out of a state like Mississippi. This kid was all state as a junior too. Pretty impressive.

I think they could take as many as 4 WRs because if you think about it they lost Harris and Darby plus McCarron and Vandeberg are seniors. They only have Scheel, Smith, Falconer, Parker and Young after this year.

Smith looks physically ready to play as a freshman. Buckley/Bell may also have a chance to be a 4 year starter if they were to sign with the Hawks. Holmes and Oliver

As others have said this kid already looks like he is physically ready to play. One thing I love by watching his highlights along with his build and jumping ability Smith just screams out to be the perfect WR in the red zone you could throw a fade up in the the corner and he will out jump the CB for the ball.

Just have a feeling some other P5 conferences will make a run at him this fall.

As already mentioned a bunch of times, kid already looks physically ready for college. I love that he is 6'3.

All of this, and he actually looks like a pretty decent route runner. Liked his footwork in the film and that was one of the few WR highlight vids I've seen with blocking shown. Should be a great fit.
