Anthon ranks Big Ten coaches for 2018.....

No one is claiming Kirk to be a genius and better coach like Fitz ...the "golden boy".

So, no, I won't play the "insert Kirk's name" game.

Again, Kirk wasn't pursued by other high profile programs like Fitz, so he didn't turn any down. Fitz did...cuz he knows deep down he's nothing by a "purple blood", a 6-7 win and mediocre bowl invite guy. While he is worshiped for it at NW, it wouldn't fly for very long anywhere else. Not even at Iowa.

I'm not trying to pick a fight LaQ, I just noticed the wording sounded a lot like what many say about Kirk. He's happy at Iowa because he gets a lifetime contract from people satisfied with 7-5.

Fitz is definitely a fit at NW, he'll be there as long as he wants. He wouldn't be received the same way at another school.

Ummm Frost turned a team around from 0-12 to 13-0 in two seasons. He won every single coach of the year award in the country last year.

Kirk has proven to be a great developmental coach but unable to win consistently or win the big games. He averages 7.5 wins a year...Bo Pelini averaged 9.3 wins a year and was 3-1 against Kirk. Until Hawkeye fans accept that you CAN do better than Kirk and actually strive to be great, you'll be average forever and have one good season and one bad season every 3 years for eternity. I honestly respect your program but I'll take a team that strives for greatness than one that accepts mediocrity. Kirk is a great guy, a fantastic OL coach, but an average head coach. 8th might even be too high...BIG has best collection of coaches in the nation.

Frost has done ZILCH in the B1G.

By all intents and purposes, Frost HAS to do with Nebby what he did in Florida or he's gone in 4 years and you'll have like your 3rd canned coach on the payroll and PJ Fleck will step in.

Nebraska will NEVER return Nebby to the 80s and 90s. Not in the B1G.

Good. You have one.

I suppose we could argue about whether Iowa is a mediocre football program or not, but Neby is the poster child for "striving" for greatness. Maybe Frost is the guy to bring the Huskers back to greatness, but it's been a lot of coaching turnover to get here. As an Iowa fan, I think our chances for "greatness" are just as good with KF as Iowa could do with an unknown replacement.

Now, if Iowa had a hot commodity with Iowa connections waiting in the wings to coach, like Bob Stoops, I might feel differently.

Lol he won’t be canned in 4 years. Only Iowa people have made that narrative up and continue to pound it.

You may want to scroll up and find the origin of this particular Fitz discussion.

His success is tied directly to his "purple blood" ...and if he were somewhere other than NW, he wouldn't be nearly as effective.

That's why we were discussing him vs Ferentz.

Ferentz could be just as effective at NW as he is at Iowa, but the other way around for Fitz ...not so much.

You have zero way of backing that up. Face it, Fitz has the competitive fire that fans often wish KF had (although this may be perception more than reality).

Personally, I'd take KF in a heartbeat. But Fitz is a good coach and has done a good job.

If you are comparing the two straight up, it’s not even close. We’re getting to the point where Ferentz’ name is being mentioned alongside all-time great Big Ten coaches - and while I realize that tenure length has a lot to do with it, it’s impossible to deny the success that KF has had

Wut?

Head-to-Head

Fitz has beaten KF 7 times

KF has won 5 times

Fitz and KF may both end up in the HOF. But I would say Fitz had a bigger mountain to climb.

Head to head is a dumb way to determine the “better” coach. Joe Paterno was 3-8 against Kirk Ferentz but I’m not out here proclaiming KF is a better coach than JoePa... that said, I’m not really sure what your “wut?” is about

Frost will make Saban and Meyer look like jr high coaches he is that great .

KF is getting rejuvinated with his new hires. after the 2005 of a 11th rated recruiting class the Iowa staff was picked over and KF had to replace them, he made some good hire as well as some very bad hires, cough cough Kaz comes to mind. now with 7 new coaches on staff and their connections things are looking better
WR Coach Copeland ties to Florida
RB Coach Foster ties to Georgia and Alabama
RC Bell connections to the SE and the MW
OL Coach Polasex upper MW
KOK is back and as ties to Florida and Texas.
ST Coach Woods is working Missouri,Texas, Georgia and various states
OC/TE Coach BF connections to Illinois and Ohio

Yes, Fitz has won 10 games three times, but he’s done it beating only two ranked teams in those three years. His overall record against ranked teams isn’t very good. In KFZ’s 5 double digit win years he has beaten 13 ranked teams. So while Fitz deserves some credit and he’s won some games, he’s never really competed well against the upper echelon whereas KFz has had some success. That’s the difference between these two coaches and it’s why I would put KFz above Fitz.
