Any Thoughts on Scrimmage?

Still several dropped Passes.
Petras has a cannon.
Toren is a beast when he gets moving.
Kysaun Bryan fumbled.....
Harrell is quick and catches the ball well.
The safeties are solid.

I thought the team looked much better this year than last. The DL looked solid, DBs were solid and the D in general was excellent. Mansell looked good and had a great touch on his passes. Geno Stone played well and Hooker was great. Nice catch by Drew Cook.

I keyed on WR the whole time. Really like ISM & B. Smith, but Max Cooper is going to play a lot. Very very good route runner, very quick, and very good hands. Although he does have the speed to stretch the field occasionally, I think he is the perfect slot receiver for this team. He is going to catch a lot of first down balls. Very impressed with him today, he just gets open.

I wasnt able to focus on it as much as I wanted. Did the pass to BSMITH, early for what would have been a TD, hit him 8n his hands or was it an overthrow? Also, really wish K. Bryan would not have fumbled.

Cook was a 4-star athlete coming out of high school. I really hope the coaches find a way to get him on the field.

Doesn't Cooper play the same position as Easley? If so, I'm not sure how he gets a ton of plays this year.

Don't know where Cooper is listed, but we only list 2 spots on the depth chart and they are outside. ISM is behind Easely too I think. When we go 3 wide, someone has to come in from one of those listed spots. I believe Cooper will play a lot in the slot in those 3 WR sets. He looked great there and ran very good inside routes last night. I would be shocked if he doesn't play a lot.

I feel much better about the QB position now, If Stanley was to go down the Hawks are more than fine with Mansell, not as big an arm but a defense will have to account for Him taking off , something that Iowa needs more often, think of how many drives Beathard kept going with a run after plays broke down.

2k, maybe. Iowa sneaks one out they shouldn’t. 1-11.

I'm far from an expert, but this was my post (edited) from the other thread:

One outcome is always predetermined. The defense is always ahead of the offense.

This said, the way the scrimmage was held last night, you could see the O line getting worked. And yelled at.

Friday night is a perfect time for this from a fan's (this fan's) perspective. It leaves the rest of the weekend free for other activities.

The O line is a work in progress. The D line should be good, but no real way to know this from last night. The kicking game is improved. There is more speed at WR. That is obvious. The LB's are a concern, and hardly solidified. The secondary looked good, but I suspect this was largely a function of the DL and OL being a work in progress.

They rotated. But from what I recall, Gersonde and Rastetter aren't a settled matter. And I don't remember who kicked first.

But they would run an entire offensive series, punt, and then line up in punt formation after all of this, and rotate all the punters. When practice ended, the staff kept punter through one more series/rotation of punting.

They did the same on FG's, and in the case of FG's, he who kicked forst was not the starter.

Someone else probably paid closer attention than I did, and can answer this with more specificity.

Nice. I say that because I have a cpl Neb guys I know think the better the spring game is and the more butts in the stands the better the team is. It's worked for them the last 3 years....lol. Basketball down, baseball in the dumster... I guess that's all they have....

Kickers: Miguel went first, making a 30-ish yarder. Keith and Caleb did not rep on that one. The rest of the way, all 3 guys rep’d the same distances. Miguel finished 6/6, Caleb 4/5, and Keith 3/5.

Punters: Colten and Ryan traded reps the entire night. I was in the south end zone, so I couldn’t gauge distances well, but each guy had a couple clams (30s), a couple boomers (50+), and a couple decent efforts (40s). Each probably took about 6-7 reps each.

That's the detail that I lacked.

eta I think kick offs and fg kicking are in good shape for the foreseeable future. Also, I don't recall one rugby style punt.

I know exactly what you were saying. Just playing along.

Offense: Stanley showed good command, and generally placed balls where only his receiver could make a play on them, both Stanley and Mansell made good use of their check down receivers, Mansell is a dangerous runner, line blocking (1s) looked pretty good in both run and pass, ISM and Young had some good runs, Cooper showed good hands. Petras showed promise with good fundamentals but slow decision-making (to be expected in a true freshman). At this point, Mansell is the clear #2.

Defense: I focused mainly on the backfield, but the DEs looked like disrupters, Hooker looked really good as it was clear he’s been watching tape and has excellent knowledge of his role in the overall scheme as he made his presence known frequently (1 interception, one tip which Gervase intercepted, multiple tackles and pass breakups), Gervase looked very good as well, LBs never looked out of place.

ST: kickers looked good, overall. Miguel looked like the leader, finishing 6/6 with a long of 48. Punting was about the same - a mix ranging from poor (30s) to outstanding (50s), with Rastetter having the slight edge.

I’ll post endzone view videos, soon.

Punters were inconsistent, as usual. 3 safeties stood out. Max cooper was the most consistent receiver. Dom Dafney made plays. First 2 running backs look like B1G backs. Recinos is our kicker. Not many penalties, guys played fairly clean. O-line depth should be a concern. Linebacker depth also concerning. Corners ok but not great. Recruits not looking very engaged during the actual practice.

I think Your Son looked outstanding, He will win Iowa a game or two this year .

Something I have not seen discussed yet is the Wes Dvorak injury. I dont know much about the young man or potential PT but it sounds like he might be done for awhile.

Dafney seems to get very little ink, but he looks good to me.

Might he be a surprise?

I think we caught everything thrown to him. One good catch over the middle where he got up ended and held on to the ball.

That's good news about Mansell.

I much prefer a qb that isn't afraid to take off when he sees an opening, and has the athletic ability to do it.
