Any suggestions on how to handle it? Seem to get into a different joint every couple of months.

I'd recommend going to your Dr. and getting a prescription for Allopurinol. I'd get a major gout attack at least 2 to 3 times a year that made life miserable for weeks at a time.

I haven't had an attack since I've started taking the, one a day, pill. Do I love taking medicine for it? No, but it's worth it to avoid having an attack.

Definitely go to a Dr and get prescription meds. I don't get it often but when I do it's in the base of my big toe. Dr gave me indomethacin which helped clear it up for me. You may need something different seeing as you get it so often

I’m usually able to walk it off but this weekend it got into my knee and had to go to urgent care. I will talk to my doctor. Thanks for the advice.

Yes- it can be controlled with meds like allopurinol or colchicine.
Definitely need to adjust diet by avoiding sugars, beer and shellfish. Foods with high purine content should be moderated. Buy the book “End of Gout”

Yes. When we were pinned down for 3 straight days in the hills of Afghanistan, we had goat. It was the only thing around to eat. Wasn't awful but it wasn't good. Considering our circumstances then, I was fine with eating it.

Nevermind. Misread it. No, never had gout.

Gout in just a precursor to death by old age and alcoholism. Nothing to worry about, just rub some tussin on it, drink a beer and eat your spinach.

Prednisone works for me. I get 2to3 flare-up a year and that is what iam prescribed.
My doctor was reluctant to put me on alpurinol or chochcinene saying he didn't feel like a daily med was worth the few flare-ups a year I have. Not sure I agree. It has been over a year since my last bout.

Hmm I wonder if that’s what I’m dealing with. A couple times a year I get a sharp pain in the base of my big toe. I’ve had to get stitches in my hands a couple times and this sharp pain in my toe feels exactly like the site injection of local anesthesia. I writhe in pain for a bit and say naughty words, then it eventually goes away. CSB

Get medication immediately.

For anti-inflammatory I prefer Indomethacin or Naproxen.

For the actual gout med I like Mitigare or Colchicine. Take these in combination for the proper amount of time and go lay down putting an ice pack on the impacted area off and on. Any teledoc can prescribe these things.

Pain meds are a great bonus if they are available to you.

Once it clears up, get on a daily dose of Allapurinol. It works best for prevention.

Good luck. Unless you’ve had gout, you don’t understand gout.

I had one about once a year recently. Started taking allopurinol and have not had one since.

I was having gout attacks in my ankle, toe, and knee. I was seeing a specialist and he didn't want to put me on daily meds either.
I went to my regular Dr and explained the situation. He said each gout flare up causes joint damage and erodes cartilage.
Once on allipurinol, my knees feel better all the time. I likely had a minor case of gout constantly. My Dr also gave me a standing script of prednisone of 5 pills for me to take when I feel an attack.
For diet control, I personally have found I am not sensitive to any food specifically, but I am extremely sensitive to water intake. If I drink soda or beer instead of water a good portion of the day, I am likely to have a flare up. At the first sign or a flare up, I chug water and take 3 200mg advil. This has been very effective for me.

I food/water journaled to figure out water intake was my personal key.

Also, if I was not active for a period of time, then did a lot of exercise I tended to have a flare up. Constant exercise also prevents a uric acid buildup. I have lost 35 lbs this year and that has seemed to have an effect also.

I have struggled with it for a long time. First flare-up was when I was around 30; I'd never heard of it but it hurt like hell. Didn't have another for around 12 to 15 years but then got to where I was having flare-ups once a year or so. About 3 years ago I started allopurinol daily. It has helped, I have had one flare since going on it.

Good luck. I have always had a very high pain threshold but gout is unbelievably miserable.

I keep prednisone on hand for flares for 2-3 days....that and chochcinene for a couple of weeks until everything is “settled spdown”. I take 300 mg of Allperinol daily to maintain and its been a while since I have had a flare.
( Caution ...for me, the chochcinene initial does upsets the hell out of my gut , so I just take 1 tablet daily.)

I think I was in a perpetual state of slight dehydration. Being hydrated has helped me a lot too.

Stop or reduce the following, red meat, alcohol, food’s sweetened with fructose and lose weight. Gout tends to be diet and health driven.
Otherwise you are only treating the symptoms not the cause.

There is a huge genetic aspect of it, too. You might be able to lessen the frequency and/or severity of flare-ups, but not totally eli.inate them.

I definitely don’t understand it - and sounds like Im glad I don’t have it! This guy I know does and he somehow knows when a “flare up” is coming on and he’ll do a bunch of stuff (take pills, rest / ice, etc) and swears it eliminates weeks of pain. I don’t get it the whole thing of what triggers a flare (the way he talks, one day of tailgating could do it) and how it’s managed.

I think I can “sense” an impending flare, too a few days in advance. Doc tells me I’m nutz but he wrote me an RX for some prednisone (which I take for a few days when I sense an impending flare)...The allperinole seems to keep everything in order...red meats (organs...liver, tongue, brain) and “rich foods” are carefully avoided.

He says the same thing…the sensing part. Such a weird condition. Between this and Tom Paris’ kidney stone thread I’ve upped my water intake 10X!

I definitely can tell when it’s coming. The first sign is I feel a tingle in my foot when I pee. Swear to god that’s the fist sign.

Imagine someone pulling a hot poker out of a fireplace and managing to jab at your bone marrow from inside out. Causing so much sensitivity that when a door closes and the air pressure in the room changes it feels like three more pokers were added to the marrow at that moment.
