We bought a chorkie puppy last weekend and while he is pretty much the cutest thing I have ever seen, I am at a loss as to how to train him. He eats nothing. I bought training treats and no interest. He won't eat his food. We have kibble and wet food. We bought a kong and put peanut butter in it and he hasn't touched it. He barely drinks anything. He did like the tenderloin steak I made for dinner last night but I'm not feeding him something that expensive. I am hoping as he continues to acclimate he will start eating more but he's all of about 2 lbs so he doesn't have room to lose weight. He is 3 months old today. So what do you do to train a puppy that is apparently not food motivated? Specifically house training and crate training.

And this isn't him but looks a lot like him.

We just say “No Bark” and our girl goes quiet. I say “No Lick” and she doesn’t lick. Same with biting. It just takes time and consistency.

We love our girl to death and she lives to please us.

Good luck.

Puppies need to eat. I'd take it to the vet asap.

Definitely a cutie, too.

Yep. Not eating can be a sign of GI distress/medical problem.

Almost any dog will eat treats.

Training-wise, limit the training words to simple one/two word vocabulary.

'Bites' for chew toys and things to chew. 'No Bites' for stuff to not chew.
'Speak' to bark for a treat. 'No Speak' to not bark.

I have people over all the time who try to "reason with" my dog, when he won't bring a tennis ball to fetch. "Hey....you need to bring the ball to me so I can throw it....come and drop the ball over here" - he mostly ignores that. It's all "blah blah blah ball blah blah blah"

Me: "Hey.....Come & Drop. Fetch the Ball"; he runs up to drop it pretty routinely, when you limit the verbal commands to JUST the words he knows.

He also may just be traumatized by the transition from where you adopted him.

I'd make sure you have someone with him 24 hrs/day; keep his crate in your room, or put a sleeping bag on the floor and sleep next to the crate, so he's not left alone until he's fully acclimatized to the new place. Get up every 3-4 hours and take him outside to pee, because the sooner he learns to pee outside the less likely you are to have accidents inside. When they are that small, take them out to pee at 2-3 hr intervals.

No, seriously, brah, we need dog pics.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours...

Our girl looks similar to @lucas80 's avatar. But she's a Jack Russell. Our second one. Smartest, most sensitive dog we've ever had. Smart beyond belief. She's sleeping in her office bed right now.

Mrs. Herk and I are major league dog lovers.

This pic would be pretty close but ours has a little brown around one eye.

What is a chorkie? How much did it cost? Where did you get it.

I chorkie is a chihuahua and yorkie mix. We got it from a dog groomer here locally. I think she may breed them. He was $300 which is pretty cheap I guess. I am stunned at what my friends are paying for dogs and even the rescue places were more than this. But, some of those dogs are already trained.

Rescue dogs (at least in Iowa) have to come with their shots, spay/neuter, and a microchip. The rescues I follow usually charge $250-300 for a young dog. Some go $150-200 for an older dog.

Backyard breeders often have dogs that have a lot of problems. Hopefully this isn't the case with yours. A dog that won't eat for more than a day is extremely concerning.

So....what's your update on the little guy?

Back to eating? Or vet time and surgery?

What is with all these new mixed breed "breeds" like labordoodles and Chorkies or a Frenchton?

If you look at what dogs are in shelters in Iowa, its almost all Pit Bulls or Pit Bull mixes. The White Trash dog of choice.
