Well, hell. Now what? (Dog bit me) - 2nd Update: #353

I joined the dog bite club a couple months ago. Next door neighbor got an overweight rescue Rottweiler and it goes crazy anytime I am outside, which irritates the owner. So one evening he told me to come over to the fence and we would put this to bed. I asked him if he was serious and he said yes, the dog wouldn't dare do anything with him around. He told him to sit and he did and I stood at the fence talking for a bit and then he said to pet him. I didn't want to but I reached my hand over and he was on it so fast. Two big bleeding holes, one on top and one in the palm. His GF is a nurse and she said I had no choice but to go to urgent care and that they would have to report it, so they knew that. I went in and they said the bites were too deep not to stitch, so they scrubbed them out like crazy and stitched them loosely and put me on an antibiotic. By the next day the pain was unbelievable and my hand and arm started swelling and the hand was unusable. Could barely work. Finally went to our onsite clinic and they told me to go straight to an ER, that infection was spreading up the arm. So I went to the local ER, was there from 2:15pm to 9pm and the IV drip was 3.5 hours. The police had forgotten to make sure the owner had proof of rabies, so the ER doc called the cops and they got the proof and took it to the ER, otherwise they were starting rabies shots. They also put me on a second antibiotic. Everything went well after that. The dog is still next door and still hates me. Goes nuts if just he is out but if the owner is, he is pretty good.

Fill us in on the sequel when it finally gets out of their yard.

While I understand what I’m typing is probably illegal I would have zero remorse about personally putting that dog down

Saw Joey the other day. He's doing great in his new home! No MDKs to report.

Handsome boy... glad he's doing well. Those dogs don't have a shortage of crazy among them, however.
Understatement of the year. Three of them within two blocks of my house, including next door. Hyper doesn’t cover it.

So, the family dog bit the crap out of me last night. He'll be 2 this June and we've already got like $5k into this Golden Doodle (he's part of the family). He's extremely well trained--leash walking, house broke, tricks, heck he can open and shut the back door.

However, he's always had a resource guarding issue and last night I did not read him well. In hindsight, I now recognize he was pissed his friend (another doodle) was eating his food. Joey (my dog) jumped up on the couch, tail stiff and showing me his teeth. I sat down with him trying to figure out what was going on. I noticed the other dog eating his food and commented on it. As I sat back on the couch, I patted my chest for him to come over and he stepped on my crotch. When I went to move his paw he mauled my dadgum hand. I had to go to the ER last night (hence the late night posting).

Now, I don't trust him. What if he were to ever bite my son or another kid? Do I hire another trainer (more $$) to see if we can break him of this? I love this darn dog.

There are a total of 7 deep punctures (the others are on my palm):

Animals can be unpredictable…which is the reason we didn’t have pets in our house when our kids were toddlers.

Sing it with Milo.

I hear the train a comin', it's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when
I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone

We already had two German Shepherds when our son was born. The male did nothing but growl at him and he got under the crib and tried to overturn it. The female was fearful and resentful and started pooping inside to show her opinion.
Nope. We gave it a chance but I was in a constant state of fear even when they were gated out of his room. They just wouldn’t accept him and we eventually had to put them down. Very sad - but your child always comes first.

Didn’t get another dog until our kids were in primary school. Then we got a female Golden Retriever puppy and she was so wonderful - as Goldens always are.
We’ve had two Goldens, a black Lab, a Shih Tzu (she dominated our Golden and our Lab 100% of the time the 3 of them were together) and now I have Buddy, who’s a “Schnoodle” (Schnauzer/Poodle) rescue and he runs the house. The vet says he got the Schnauzer personality - very bossy. 😏
Dogs add to your life but so many people get a dog and fail miserably at being a dog person and a dog parent.
The dog deserves better.

I got bit in the wrist and my knee while walking a trail yesterday by a boxer mixed breed. Broke the skin, but no ligament or muscle damage. Scary as hell, though.

The dog walker had two dogs about 50 feet from me when we first saw each other. Dogs started jumping and he was pulling them away when one of them broke free. The walker gave me his number and then his roommate (that's how she described herself), the owner of the dog, called. She provided me the vaccination record. I got treated at an urgent care, which amounted to me getting a tetanus shot (my last one was 5 years ago) and prescribed an antibiotic.

A rep from Nebraska Humane Society stopped by last night. The dog is to be quarantined for 10 days and the owner is to be cited.

The dog walker was claiming the dog has never bit anyone, but gets excited around strangers, which is why he tends to keep him away from trails (this was near the very end of a trail). He was also defending himself, saying the dog was leashed; he just got himself loose. And the owner was saying that the guy didn't have permission to take the dog out. So much deflection between the two of them, though the walker did offer to pay the medical bills.

But why the hell do people own dogs like that? If you know he's a potential threat, why even risk having it around others? Why would you want something like that in your house?

Feelings.

Sorry to hear, good to hear it wasn't worse.

I had a Border Collie mix and had to walk him on a very short lead if anyone was around. I made sure to keep him away from strangers. He nipped my cousin who thought he could charm him. He was without a doubt my dog. One day when my youngest was standing of my feet I reach over lightly swatted their butt playfully. The dog leaped over our Jack Rat Terrorist Alpha and grab my arm and explained that I was not to lay a hand on the kid. That's why you keep animals like that in your house.

Not sure what all I have posted in this thread, but over Christmas a friend/former employee was within a centimeter of losing an eye. A German Shepard bit him unprovoked. My brother was bit by a Great Dane a month or so ago getting off his bike. A friend of a friend lost his toddler to a dog attack a couple years ago and one of my closest friends neighbor was attacked by her dog and almost lost her arm. I’m not anti dog, but man I’m awfully weary of them.

You see that as a good thing? What if that was an older sibling?

That dog would have been out of my home forever before the end of the day.

What I don’t understand is when people have dogs or walk dogs that they can’t control. It’s pathetic how often you see it. One of my dogs has been bit before because of this.
While out walking, some tiny female was walking a boxer/bulldog looking type dog and it pulled her over to my dogs where it nipped at our golden-doodle who was just out enjoying the weather.
I shouldn’t have to try and protect my dogs and myself because you can’t overpower your own dog. I get they might have it for protection but is it really protection when you can’t control it?

I agree...and just another reason rehoming Joey was so hard. When we walked him, he was always 1/2 step behind us and if he got excited and started to pull a simple command ended it instantly. Heck, we taught him to close the back door and was working on opening it. :(

I love dogs more than most people but if that encounter happened as described, it needs to be put down.
