That Kemerer may participate in? I'd love to see him get a few more wins under his belt, hopefully vs better competition.

The UNI Open would be one.

Iowa hasn't sent anyone to the UNI open since they moved it from early December to mid-December. The UNI open is now the weekend before finals at Iowa which is why they don't send anyone (It's on 12/12 this year).

The BV Open is the only one I can think of in Iowa, and that is on 12/5.

I don't get all the complaining about which bracket people wrestle in. I've always considered Dan Gable a pretty good wrestling coach. In my freshman year, guys like Eric Juergens and Doug Schwab wrestled in the 20 and under division with the rest of us at the UNO Open.

Unless you know the guys personally, I'm not sure why you'd want to determine what tournament they wrestle in. I hope that competition for red-shirts is primarily aimed at helping them develop as athletes...I'd prefer that the people deciding what the right schedule of competition is are the same people working with the athletes every day. It's one thing to wish you could see them against higher competition or even to say you'd do it that way if you were coaching...its another to belittle their accomplishments to date by comparing them with a junior high meet.

I think Kemmerer pinned or TF'd everyone except the tournament director. For you literalists, he didn't actually wrestle the tournament director.

We have a number of posters on here that like to second guess every decision our coaches make. Nobody is above criticism, but we have a large contingent that truly believe they are smarter than everybody else. If Kemerer doesn't develop, it won't have anything to do with not wrestling Mayes this past weekend.

And Brent Metcalf as a true freshman wrestled the Open Division at Kauffman Brand and lost on a penalty point to Ty Eustice in the Finals, while Dustin Schlatter won the 20 and under (and later went on to win a National Title that same true freshman year).

So there is precedent from Tom Brands to wrestle True Freshman with the Big Boys. Didn't seem to bother Brent all that much.........................

Just to clarify, I'm sure Tarp wasn't intending to belittle Kemerer's accomplishments at all. To the contrary, he's excited about seeing him take on tougher competition because he believes he can excel at a higher level. He's just as impressed as the rest of us by Kemerer's accomplishments to date, I'm sure.

As for which division is best for our younger guys in these open tournaments, I have no idea. I can see the logic behind starting them with the other youngsters and getting them some college-level wins under their belts before moving up to take on the big boys. That said, I, like everyone else, am looking forward to seeing Kemerer step up in class. I think he's going to make some serious noise in Evanston. Can't wait to see it.

I'm not belittling Kemerer's accomplishments, Gogel, I'm belittling the level of competition he's faced.

The same issue was just discussed on the podcast, so I'm not the only one puzzled by it. It's great that we have a redshirt who is talented enough to be pinning and TF-ing his way through tourneys. I was really hoping to see him in the open tourney last weekend, because I wanted to see our thoroughbred run with other thoroughbreds. From a development pov it probably doesn't matter--he's going to be great regardless.

We have a variety of viewpoints on this board, which is healthy and keeps the discussion lively. I think we all agree with the opinions of the coaches at least 90% of the time, and we're probably wrong the other 10%. It doesn't mean anything other than that we're avid fans and this is a message board.

Wouldn't wrestling top guys let you know what you have to work on? As hard as Brands' drive their wrestlers mentally and physically, it's a bit surprising to have Kemmerer avoid Long. I'm sure there is a method to their madness. There is stuff the Brands' do that I question, but even though I don't understand it, I don't have a huge problem with what they are doing with Kem.
