Anyone ever eat ostrich meat?

It's okay, but not really worth the price they are asking. If you just want the novelty of saying you ate ostrich, go ahead, but it's really nothing special. For the same money, you can get some pretty good wagyu beef.

Last week I was looking up emu eggs to see how they compared to chicken, ran down a rabbit hole for how emu's are one of the WORST animals to try to farm and raise, being murder birds and what not. Ended up on this site looking at filets, thinking about placing an order. Really would want my brother to be here to do a taste test with between emu and ostrich filets, and do a big omelette of big bird vs little.

Sidenote, this place is a little cheaper than what you were quoting. Also sold out on 1lb filets tho.

Had a small piece of it 24 years go at a place in NYC. Wasn’t anything special to me and not worth the upcharge over chicken or turkey.. Kind of like when I had a camel burger. Not worth the up charge over beef or bison.

Back in the 90s and early 00s, ostrich and emu meat were relatively popular replacing the beefalo hybrid from the 80s as the meat fad du jour. The local community coop grocery store in Tally called New Leaf used to carry ostrich and emu meat from local farms for about double the cost of typical choice beef. Because the nutritional value was better (120 calories for ostrich and 134 calories for emu versus 214 calories for lean ie 15-85 beef plus the birds had about 3x the B vitamins), I bought it fairly often especially in the 90s. I relatively quickly stopped buying any of the “steak” cuts as it’s relatively bland and flavorless but continued to regularly buy the ground meat versions because it worked well for highly flavored dishes that called for ground beef. So I made a lot of ostrich and emu tacos, sloppy joes, picadillo, bolognese sauce, pastitsio, enchiladas, chili, meatloafŷAmerican-style goulash, cottage pie, lasagna, meatball parm and etc… worked great.

As ostrich and emu are bland but “beefy” I made that replacement pretty of times as they are great as ingredients just not as the star. Now that the price is going way north of triple or quadruple the prices of lean beef it’s not worth it.

If you’re looking for exotic red meats to try keep in mind one caveat, if you like your steak unsauced, barely seasoned and with any doneness over medium rare (including medium) then there is no red meat you will enjoy over plain ole cow meat except possibly brown and black bear.

On the other hand, if you like sauces on your red meat there are a large number of antelope and deer species (like whitetail deer, mule deer, axis deer, gazelle, gemsbok etc…) where the heavy iron and/or musky flavor works even better than beef with the sauce or heavy seasoning or marinade. And if you prefer your red meat sauceless, lightly seasoned and blue, rare or medium rare then I actually prefer red kangaroo, bison, elk, red deer, nilgai, kudu, pronghorn “antelope” and eland. And finally, when it comes to low and slow smoked bbqed roasts, pot roasts and stews, both bear species and moose top beef in my book.
 
We had some medium rare ostrich steaks at a holiday dinner about 20 years ago. Everyone liked them.
