Look at Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin, those teams are always thought of as "good defensive teams" that's the reputation they have, so it seems like when we play those teams, they are allowed to clutch, grab, yank, tug, and any other obstructive adjective you can name all without fouling for the most part or at least without being called for fouls. What can Iowa do to change their reputation?

So are you saying since our reputation is that of a shitty defensive team the refs hold it against us? Am I reading that right?

sort of, but more like since other teams have a reputation for being good defensively, they get away with being more physical, or grabby etc

The physicality of play increases like this every year in the Big Ten because as the season unfolds refs begin to accept what they see game in and game out as normal,.. Add to this the fact that all of our conference opponents are smart enough to scout the opposition and game them accordingly,.. Both of these things will ease drastically when tournament play comes around...
