Awesome Iowa defense

Shutting down Montgomery is the surprise storyline of the game. He never got loose. So different than last year.
So amped for our Defense this year! Djimon started for Welch at Weakside or did he get injured right away?

Colbert started the game. Welch was dealing with an undisclosed injury during the week (presumably it held him out of practice).

It's also interesting to note that there were times when Wade came in and received quality snaps too. These LBs still have a long ways to go ... but they're seemingly doing a lot of good things.

National championship DL. Will that happen, who knows, but it's that good.
The DL pressure not only allows us to get pressure on the QB with just our linemen ... but when we decide to dial up blitzes ... they're getting home more often than I remember in the past. That probably reflects opposing Os double teaming multiple D-linemen ... and that's opening up gaps for guys to fly through.

The defense has been superb. Colbert was awsome in his first real exposure. Niemann was also great again. The front four were the dominating force of the game. They totally demoralized the clowns after the first drive.

I know you saw this because you're smarter than me. Parker dropped his best pass rusher into coverage at least two times, maybe three. And it worked.

Some great team defense going on, shutting down the ISU offense. I'd feel even better if NIU was putting any points on the scoreboard tonight. Hopefully these games can ramp things up to the Wisconsin game for the real test.

Where was Reiff? I don't remember seeing him in there. I'm still not seeing enough from Lattimore.

We will find out how good our D really is against Wisky
Yep, until our D line is up against serious competition it is kind of hard to know how the back 7 will do when they are "on their own".
Like how the season has started for them though!

This is the correct answer. Wisky is a totally different level and the defense will have its hands full all day.
Not saying NIU or ISU's OL is as good as Wisconsin's but neither one is horrible either. Both of these teams will win their fair share of games this year and our DL has completely dominated in both games. I think Wiscy highly touted OL will have their hands full on Sept. 22

Absolutely ... but the Hawks are still a group that is improving through each and every snap. You have to remember that we still have a surprising number of new regular starters on D (both CBs, all three LBs, and 1 D-lineman) ... and yet the D has only given up 3 points during non-clean-up minutes.

The UNI game allows for Phil to tweak more things ... and for the guys to get more quality reps.

With any luck, we'll see the Hawk's level of execution continue to ramp up as we approach the game with the Badgers.

Wiscy's OL is in a different universe from anything Iowa has gone against so far. ISU's O line was really bad. 188 yards bad.
OTOH, Iowa's D line is legit. The LBs have exceeded expectations so far. They will put up a good fight and Iowa has a chance to win that game.

Wiscy's OL will be the best we face all year. Definitely a huge challenge. On the flip side ... schematically they're not a huge mystery to us.

Will their play-action game be able to burn us?

Given the "Kinnick factor" ... Wisconsin and similar teams tend to take a more conservative tack in how they call games. If they take chances and it backfires ... it can give Iowa a little too much momentum. Thus, given this consideration ... I think that Iowa's D has a decent shot to limit Wisconsin's O. However, what they'll likely be relying upon is that the match-up between their D and our O is a much bigger mismatch in their favor. Thus, will they be able to ride that advantage to also own the field-position battle? Given the field position battle ... if Iowa is always pinned ... then that could allow them to enjoy better field position ... and that allows them to apply a lot more stress on our D. Even if they're not scoring a ton of points ... it could leave our D on the field a lot. If that happens ... then they can break the game wide open in the 4th quarter ... just like they have a number of times through the past several years.

I've gotten a few defensive series into rewatching the second half - up until that point I had only seen Reiff line up when we were in our goal-line defensive package (on ISU's first possession) ... but he didn't see a live snap because it caused the false-start penalty.

Lattimore was rotated in pretty early. He's clearly improved compared to last season. He gave us some quality snaps ... and he was pretty close to the ball on a number of plays.

Through the snaps I've watched so far - the only DTs to see live snaps were Matt, Sam, and Ced on "regular downs" ... and then Chauncey and Parker came in on pass-rushing 3rd downs.

We played him far better than I expected us to. Really impressive outing by our run D.
Our DL.

Our Linebackers.

Our back 4.

Where is there a weakness? Right now I don't see one. Or are we jumping the gun? We are just 2 games in. After game 4 I think we will know a lot. Wisconsin has a veteran OL to open holes and to protect for the passing game. If we can shut down (limit) Wisky's offense, that will be making a serious statement about this being an elite defense.

Linebacker group was significantly improved from game 1. In the right spot much more.

The D is in the solid position at this early
point of working on relatively small things rather than having to re-scheme or make fundamental changes.

We need to give props to our kicking game in conjunction with that solid D. We handily won the field position game yesterday.

No doubt. Miguel missed on a couple of makeable 3's for him, but not concerned on him. The Rat man is probably leading the nation in punting, and had a couple nice directional out of bounds inside the 15 as well. Who would have thunk it............
