B1G- Session IV Thread

Not landing Hoagie Hidlay or Bouzakis rank pretty high up there as well. Although, getting Hidlay was a very uphill battle with his brother already at NCState.

Still, if Iowa had 1, or even both, now they would be right there with PSU…
We were in on Mendez too and blew that although maybe he will reconsider. I didn't think he wrestled up to potential there and Paddy has been a complete bomb

Our final places compared to seeds

Spencer: even
Teske: +1
Woods: even
Murin: +1
Cobe: -2
PK: +1
Nelson: +2
Assad: -2
Warner: even
Cass: even

I know I thought (hoped) we would perform much better in comparison to seeds, but it's not like we fell apart completely. I believe we also scored the most bonus points as a team.

We just don't have the high-end power to stay even with PSU
Your last sentence sums it up.

We wrestled fine compared to our seeds. The disappointment is in how poor our seeds were compared to hopes an expectations at the start of the season.

Yep, it's tough to expect big ten championships from guys seeded 4 or worse.

Looking at next year who are our legit big ten finals contenders?

125- Drake. I'd say yes.
133- Teske/Schriever - No
141- Woods, Yes
149- If Chittum hopefully yes if not then No.
157- See 149.
165- Yes
174- No
184- No
197- No
285- Yes

We shouldn't be ok with that many No answers.

Who do you think has truly disappointed this year? It’s really only Warner (2nd to R12) and Assad (I think we all thought he’d AA this year finally, still can but not likely at all).

Everybody else is right where any honest wrestling fan thought they would be.

20% of the lineup being a disappointment is pretty bad.

There also was a hope that Teske might have been a little better.

Unfortunately and in reality hope is the only thing that would lead one to believe Teske would be better than he has been. He has been about what you would expect him to be based on past history.

What's the solution? Is there a coach out there who you think we should fire t and t for?

Ideally they do their jobs better on the recruiting front. It will make their coaching job easier. I'm not saying it's a scenario but I have been impressed with what Pat Pop has done. Outside of him or Cunningham I don't see much on the head coach front that would potentially be an upgrade. I do think there are a lot of areas to improve on the assistant front to diversify technically.

Decent showing overall. No huge surprises. 10 to NCAAs. Spencer looks fine. Real looks great. PK looking like he can AA in a tough weight.

133, 149, 165, 174 wrestled above seed. Only 157 and 184 wrestled below.

If Warner would wrestle like Allred instead of Cash Wilcke, he'd be an NCAA champ. Otherwise every match at NCAAs is gonna be a coin flip.

20% maybe. Biggest thing is one of our finalist turned into a R12 guy for whatever reason. That and I don’t think anybody has really turned a corner to be a top 5 guy.

Sucks this year though because they’re not that far off. If Warner was the same guy as last year and we had a guy or two really rise to the occasion, Iowa would be right there with a chance to win. It can still happen, but it’s not likely at all.

It would be awesome to see an unsuspecting Iowa guy run through a bracket this year, kind of like Warner did last year. Not holding my breath though.

Well, probably because he was high school aged and can still take a RS.
Which is why he said "like" a redshirt. No one can deny that spending a year in the PSU room is infinitely more valuable than wrestling your senior season at your high school. Snyder and Lee benefited a TON and were ready to go right away as true freshmen. Without doing what they did as High School seniors, there is no way any of them would have been near as good that early on...

I never claimed he couldn't. I never claimed he took an official redshirt. But he did spend last season basically doing what a freshman would do while on redshirt and it was obviously a good plan to have him ready for this season.

Here is the data on Warner.

49 of his 137 career matches have been decided by 2 pts or less. That's a 36% career avg. Of those 49 "coin-flip" matches, he has won 25 and lost 24 (about as you'd expect from coin flips).

2018: 4 of 19 matches were "coin flip" = 21% (went 2-2)
2019: 9 of 28 = 32% (went 5-4)
2020: 6 of 24 = 25% (went 3-3)
2021: 6 of 17 = 35% (went 2-4)
2022: 14 of 27 = 52% (went 9-5)
2023: 10 of 22 = 45% (went 4-6)

His win percentage against top-8 opponents has remained relatively consistent, and never >40%.
2018: no top-8 opponents
2019: 1-3
2020: 2-3
2021: 2-3
2022: 2-4 (both wins @ NCAAs)
2023: 1-2

His past 2 seasons have had the highest % of coin-flip matches.

This season is the first time he has lost twice to non-top-20 opponents.

In short:
Instead of opening up as his career has progressed, he has tightened up...i.e., wrestling not to lose instead of wrestling to win.

What happened between last year and this year? Nothing. He's simply less lucky this year (4-6 vs 9-5 on coin-flip matches).

But he was a high schooler doing it.

So what? What claim are you making that he didn't have the experience of an unofficial redshirt last year? Saying he was taking highschool classes doesn't contradict anything. I stated he had the experience of being in the PSU room last year and wrestling in college opens which is like taking a redshirt. Saying he was highschool age doesn't change that fact.

Was really feeling it for Assad this year.

I am going to post what I said several years ago, when I felt the coaches needed to do something to motivate him to be more aggressive on his feet. Apparently whatever they tried did not work.

Poor kid's body just hasn't kicked into manhood yet, so every match is going to be a battle. Also, if I were his coach before every match I would tell him he owes me 1,000 push-ups the next day, but I'll subtract 200 for every offensive move he makes on his feet. He's not going to improve at Nationals without scoring on his own attacks, so they need to find a way to motivate him to do it.
