B1G West win 4 today over vaunted East

And NW did it with their back up QB. MSU got screwed, but it is good for the west.

There were several very bad calls and no-calls that went against the Huskers. Seriously, we were getting boned up till that last play. Without those, it's very possible that the final series isn't needed. Great win!!

I agree.....Huskers had quite a few calls go against them (a couple PI's that should have been called earlier, one on a TD). While there was not 'major' contact to knock the receiver out, he was behind the DB and was angled out as the DB slid toward the sideline. A tough call, but not a horrible one.

Michigan State and Penn State go down. Hmm, maybe we're not the bad division?

Heck, even Minnesota is within striking distance in the Horseshoe.

Baloney!!! Blasphemy!!! Crap!!!

The Big Ten East has handed the West WAAAY more losses so far this year! They are FAR better....that is why their overall team's records are a combined 18-19 in conference play, and the West teams are a combined 19-18!!!

Essentially, MSU's philosophy is to force the officials to throw the flag on PI so often that eventually they will just decide to keep it in their pocket. It's basically the same as MSU basketball with hand-checking.

Don't kid yourself. The BIG East is by far the stronger division. Keep in mind, you guys dodge OSU, MSU, PSU, and Michigan. C'mon now !

lol! Good call on the hand-checking.

That's actually a pretty good analogy.

Sorry, but Iowa would beat the snot out of psu. Mich, and msu? Iowa can play with and beat both of them. Osu is the only one that should strike fear.

Big Ten Team records vs. opposing division:

EAST
OSU 1-0 (Illinois to play)
Michigan 2-0
MSU 1-1
PennSt 1-1
Rutgers 0-1 (Nebraska to play)
Maryland 0-2
Indiana 0-1 (Purdue to play)
(5-6 overall vs West)

WEST
Iowa 2-0
Wisconsin 2-0
NW 1-1
Illinois 0-1 (OSU to play)
Nebraska 1-0 (Rutgers to play)
Minn 0-2
Purdue 0-1 (Indiana to play)
(6-5 overall vs East)

It's a fairly decent bet that Illinois will lose to OSU, Nebraska will beat Rutgers and Indiana will beat Purdue. That would leave the East vs West head-to-head records at 7-7. Utter domination....

Just like last year...

And yet, the conventional wisdom in the off-season will be that the East is stronger. Rinse and repeat.

Maybe it's those teams that get to dodge us?

OK. If you say so. But the two teams as a Buckeye that I really do not look forward to playing is MSU and Michigan. We had a very tough time with the other teams in the East last year before we got to the BIG CCG against Wisky - which was a 5 1/2 point favorite with a lot of it to do with the Buckeyes starting their 3rd string QB. We all know how that turned out.

You guys have done a great job this year but believe me, and I mean this sincerely, I fear both MSU and Michigan more than anyone that comes out of the West - IF we're fortunate/lucky enough to make it that far. Oh,by the way, Wisky, the other West team drawing national attention and also undefeated against the East (as pointed out), has also dodged OSU, MSU, Michigan, and PSU (although they're a stretch).

Really? If cook is on msu is certainly very tough but Michigan has Ruddock at their helm and as Iowa fans we know he's not bad but not an elite qb. Their offense just isn't good enough against a good d and above average o. And osu is hands down the most talented team that can take anyone to the woodshed if they show up but from what I've seen they truly do not look significantly better than Iowa the way they have been performing this year... Psu got beat by a team Iowa beat by 30 points! Msu lost to a team that has lost to every west team except pounding a team osu struggled with. Don't act like the east is THAT good.

Don't kid yourself. Iowa has won 4 of last 5 off Michigan and Penn State is KF's bitch.

MSU & Iowa is a coin flip, but then again MSU just lost to the worst team in the West that can barely field a team. What does that say about the East??

by far? how about not even stronger.

those teams are dodging Iowa this year.

Care to explain how OSU and MSU got to dodge playing at least one the best teams from the west? Iowa, Wisconsin and NW?

Funny how that worked out?

It's easy to make the claim that you fear MSU and Michigan more when the other top teams from the west are not on your schedule. I'd be willing to bet that if any one of those three teams from the west are on your schedule, you'd fear them just as much.

Good point. The west helped Iowa out a little bit yesterday. NW remains ranked, Wiscy should be ranked this week. MSU is probably out of Rose Bowl discussion (lose to osu on the 21st).

As the saying goes, you don't have to be the better team, just the better than the team you play that day.

The way the teams are playing this season it wouldn't be unreasonable for OSU, Michigan, MSU, or Iowa to be the better team that day.

...even if Nebraska HAD NOT pulled off that upset, the records would be separated by one game at this point, East vs West. And it'd still be likely they'd end up 7-7 or 6-8, either of which is HARDLY 'one division dominating' the other side.

People are stuck in the mindsets of traditional powers; Nebraska, as bad a season as they are having, have played almost everyone on their schedule within a FG of being undefeated. They are not an elite team, but they are still a solid team.

There are only a few plays' difference (or the efforts of one or two players) that separate many of the teams in conferences nowadays. Maryland came within 1 pt of beating Penn State. Minnesota, with ANY semblance of clock management at the 1 yard line, should have beaten Michigan.

The lopsided scores we see are when one team has an advantage and a player or two to 'pick on' who cannot cover a certain scheme of plays. And teams like TCU/Baylor do that vs. weak competition to ring up big points. But when they actually play a team (like OkSt) that DOES NOT have that glaring weakness, they do not have the ability to hang with them. TCU had opponents who's record was like -13 in W-L; Baylor is like -23. Both are good teams, but not great teams the media thinks they are. TCU was barely 1TD better than a middle-of-the-road Minnesota team.

I like Iowa's chances to get to the BT Title game undefeated, but each of their remaining opponents has shown the ability to stay with a very good team during the year. Purdue gave MSU a good game. Nebraska has given just about everyone a good game. Minnesota COULD EASILY have beaten both Michigan and TCU.

None of these games are 'gimmees'; Iowa has the ability to beat them all, but they may not be the easy wins that people expect.

Hey, R1950. I think you mean OSU, MSU, PSU, and Michigan dodge Iowa. Those teams had better tighten it up when the Hawkeyes meet them next season. And if you did a crazy thing like look at Iowa's record against those teams over the last five years, when Iowa was down, you'll find it ain't a pretty picture for the so-called powers of the East. So, yes, there's that, ya fool.
