1. We were extremely lucky re: traffic. Left our hotel by LAX at 8, and were in our parking lot by 8:40. Got right on 210 after the game for the drive to Vegas and other than a short initial slowdown, we were on our way.

2. Lots of things to do in public tailgating area.

3. Chuckies tenderloins. Nice to see an Iowa vendor.

4. I'm sorry, but not all that impressed with the Rose Bowl stadium. I am as big on history and tradition as anyone, but that stadium is showing its age. Unless some updating is done, it will shortly be on its way to becoming a dump. Definitely looks much better on TV than in person.

5. Took forever to get into the stadium 2 hours before game time. Terrible job by the security people.

6. Awful game plan by coaching staff. Looked like they didn't watch more than 2 minutes of film on Stanford. After the shellacking the Hawks took in last years' bowl game, yesterday was inexcusable.

7. The players looked like they had no interest in being there. Granted, I was watching from the stands and not on TV, but I can't think of more than a couple players who actually looked like they were giving 100%. I understand the disappointment and emotional letdown from losing the Big 10 championship game....but other than the playoffs, the Rose Bowl is still better than all the other bowls, and winning it still means something to most of the country. The Hawks were in the center of the national stage, and put out a disgraceful performance. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Someday these players are going to look back and regret not putting forth a better effort. I don't mind losing....not bothering to show up does.

8. I never used to have anything against Stanford, but yesterday showed how classless they are. There is no excuse for your starting QB to be throwing bombs when you have an insurmountable lead and only 2 and a half minutes left on the clock. And their band.....nothing more needs to be said about that.

9. Although I am disappointed with the bowl result, I am still proud of this team and what they accomplished this season. It is great to be a Hawkeye!

As for your point of #7. On television it looked like they wanted to be there. But after the pick 6 to go from a possible 14-7 to 21-0, the wind had left their sails. After the first quarter they looked like they couldn't wait for half time.

Otherwise, thanks for sharing.

I agree with you. That's what I saw on TV. Nobody came to win the game. Players or coaches. If an emotional loss is still bothering you after a month and you have the Rose Bowl as a reward for a great season and that doesn't take away the sting then something is wrong.

Enjoyed your post.

The only thing I struggle with was the offensive game plan was fine. No execution. I wish Wadley would've played earlier but that feels like splitting hairs.

As for the defense..... They looked freaking lost. Still trying to understand that.

And agree with #8. I'm not mad or offended - I'm disapointed. They don't and shouldn't care but I thought they were better than that

For the most part, I can't really disagree with any of your points. I like the setting for the Rose Bowl but the stadium needs work. The game was just brutal. It was over quickly. Extremely disappointed in the performance and I have no idea how to explain it even though I try.

I don't really agree with number 8.

If we hadn't done an onside, I'd agree. Clearly they had put the offense in nuetral until then. We had no business doing an onside kick with a few minutes left imo. I usually say "anything can happen"...but that game was OVER.

re:Gameplan.

Appears nobody on staff watched Nebby vs UCLA or Wiscky vs UCLA.
IF we think we can pass or protect vs what they see every week we're nuts. They see extremely complicated pass schemes every week. On offense they see blitzes or zones all day.
Plan needed to be run it up their AXX and play action short stuff.
Defense as usual committed to stop run vs WR's and rb's catching on run.

First off, Shaw never called for a pass on that play, Hogan audibled into it. He didn't want his college career to end with an interception. Considering the success he has had, he earned that right. Secondly, as another of your fans pointed out, YOUR TEAM WAS STILL IN FULL THROTTLE MODE! Never mind we had our second and third string defenders out there for most of the second half. If Ferentz was still playing to win, why shouldn't we? Lastly, even if the game was 70-0 at that point, it is your job to stop the other team. You think passing for the end zone is insulting? What do you think pulling starters and running kneel-down plays is to the opponent? That's like saying "You don't belong on the field with us...here is the mercy rule." Get a grip man and save me the classless, disrespectful argument. This is big time college football.

Probably because most Stanford supporters know what to expect out of them, and just ignore their antics. They're the drunk uncle at Christmas. Yes, a bit embarrassing, but harmless, but it's still their uncle so they just let him stay. It's about time for Iowa to let it go.

Disagree - not harmless.
Unlike the drunk uncle I think of them as the drunk sophomore. Cut off their $$ and maybe they will shape up.
Stanford continues to fund/endorse them.
I'm a huge ND hater (long story). Their skits on them have been brutal and really bad - including making the Irish famine a joke - it killed many.
If they played a Jewish team they'd bring up the "cleansing".

Yeah, I agree. It always kind of annoys me when fans get offended over something like that. If you don't like it then play some defense.

From what I could tell, it's basically impossible to see what the game plan was on either side of the ball because we didn't execute anything. Having a plan of attack is great, it's even better if you can do the fundamental things like block and tackle and iowa did neither.

I thought the refs missed a couple calls that hurt Iowa early when the game wasn't completely out of hand...the non pass interference on Smith, the guy was draped all over him, that should have been a first down, the non face mask on CJ when his helmet was basically ripped off.

CJ's QB clock was obviously still on central time because even when there was enough protection for him to at the very least get rid of the ball to avoid a sack he couldn't even do that. There were at least a couple possessions that went from first and 10 to second and 16 because CJ took sacks when the protection was good enough but the coverage was there.

Iowa looked lost because our style of play just isn't meant to overcome long down and distance. Since the running game wasn't moving, and the passing game was often going in reverse, the game plan didn't matter.

I have no problem with the late score....I thought our onside was bush league. We were in no way winning that game yesterday and when someone kicks an onside kick you are telling everyone "game is still on." Why would we ask Stanford to stop playing?

People that complain about the late score are the problem with sports. If you don't want the other team to score, stop them. And if you can't ..STFU.

And who cares about a bunch of band kids....if they were really that smart they would have realized that California has way more bovines than Iowa does. They looked like idiots...acted like pre-teens...those kids are nothing to lose a thought on.

What yesterday demonstrated is that we have a lot of growing to do before we can be taken seriously as a national program....

i disagree, I don't think we hurt our national perception with that loss, frankly it only confirmed for some what they already thought, and for everyone else, they aren't going to let one bad day taint their view of an entire season.

Thanks treeboy, you justified your manhood, now run along.

P.S. Try not to act like such a Husker.....

First, the Hawkeye fans were incredible. They showed up big time. The stands appeared to be almost 2/3 Iowa fans. I didn't think it was as much a matter of the team not showing up as it was just that Iowa didn't have the athletes to compete. While I knew Stanford would be faster, the disappointing part was that they were also stronger and more physical. Iowa's OL got manhandled and the DL got no pressure on Hogan. Iowa looked like an 8 win team that somehow won 12 games and Stanford looked like a legitimate 12 win team.

Agree, we sent a clear message with the onside kick " game still on " so they put us over their knee for more spanking.

Just got back from the Rose Bowl, been an Iowa season-ticket holder for decades, fan since the age of 2, basically.

My thoughts:

At some point, a team/university decides to conduct themselves with class...or they don't. It's not illegal to act stupid, or immature, or even like an a-hole. Go ahead, do what you want.

On the other hand, Stanford lacked in the class department, which surprised me, when it came to the band's "performance", and in the throwing of the 50 yard bomb with 2 minutes left. Again, not against the law, not a penalty, not a huge butthurt for me. Just a surprise to come from Stanford. I expect that stuff from teams like the old Miami, and sometimes Oklahoma, when it comes to scoring late.

But Stanford? I thought they were classier than that. Guess I was wrong.

When it comes to the band, specifically, I was offended not as an Iowan, but as someone who appreciated witty comedy. The pre-game had some witty moments ("...that patriarchic social construct we call gender", in reference to the Iowa pink-locker room controversy), but the halftime with the FarmersOnly.com and so on was VERY low-hanging fruit kind of stuff. At some point, the administration is likely to pull the plug on their antics, and I think a low-class showing like this AT THE ROSE BOWL (!) would be a not-inappropriate time to do that. If you can't bring a little class TO THE FRIGGING ROSE BOWL then I think you're beyond hope.

When it comes to the stadium, it IS a dump. Bathrooms are a nightmare. Concessions in the stadium are a nightmare. Security line was a nightmare (the "Express Lane" for those without bags took twice the time as the normal line!). The sound was tinny and crappy. One video board, few replays. I was really disappointed that the "atmosphere" of the so-called Granddaddy of Them All was less-than-awe-inspiring, to say the least. The place needs serious work.

Also (and this did not affect me, as I was on a bus tour), why the hell is there no Metro stop within reasonable walking distance of a major sports and entertainment stadium? Really ridiculous. On the positive side, the food at the outside vendors at the public tailgate was quite good, if pricey.

OK, end of rant.

Agree with your take on the Stanford band. It would have maybe been somewhat amusing at a Stanford home game but "trolling" an opponent at what many consider the most prestigious bowl game of them all was wholly inappropriate. You would expect more from a school that is known for it's intelligent students. Many other high academic programs have demonstrated that you can combine intelligence with class. The Stanford band didn't exhibit either of those qualities.

I'm so freaking pumped about Iowa's great hoops comeback tonight at #14 Purdue that I couldn't give 2 shits about the wackos from the west coast. An earthquake will eventually cause the entire state of California to slide into the ocean. BTW - does Stanford even have a basketball team?

Before the start of the game the camera zoomed in on opposing tunnels. The Stanford team was jumping, dancing, hitting each other and look loose. The Iowa team looked like "deer in the headlights". I mean they looked lifeless and I'm not sure why.

I'm not going to speculate but one head coach was interacting with his players and letting them enjoy the moment and the other was chewing his gum.

I thought this was an Iowa Hawkeye Football board, so that makes you a guest, and guests don't make the rules, so if you don't like it, feel free to leave. As far as I'm concerned, any Iowa fan can talk about anything they want before any Stanford fan can talk about...anything at all, right now.

Stanford looked like a team ready to win a football game. I thought the Stanford band was pretty funny. It's interesting to have the band be a relevant part of the experience. Their antics were juvenile and their message offensive but they didn't know that Stanford would be woodshedding the Hawks by halftime. They were going to do that halftime routine up by 50 or down by 50. Who cares if a bunch of tree-hugging douchebags make fun of us? They are just stupid college kids. I'm more embarrassed for the Iowa football team than anything.

There is little I can find to mitigate the loss. Stanford Had a superior team. I wanted so desperately to be happy for the Hawks... Feel like we were in it as the sun set behind the San Gabriels... Smile at the magnitude of he Rose Bowl. But those opportunities never came. And waiting since 1959 didn't afford me any favors.

But, although the setting for the Rose Bowl is sensational, the structure is inferior. The logistics are embarrassing. The traffic control was chaos. After 102 Rose Bowls and 101 in Pasadena, you would think they would have had a clue about filling and unloading that stadium. They don't. They are fools who don't deserve such a hallowed game. That's my one visit.

Former Stanford Band member and 10 year Des Moines resident here. First, the band does this to every opponent and while their skits have been terrible for quite some time due to AD oversight, most who are familiar with the band ignore it. The only people the band is trying to entertain are other Stanford students (18-21 year olds) filling their narration with inside jokes that Stanford alumni might not even undertand. Second, they are an irreverent, independent student-run group that receives no funding from the university. With the exception of travel which is paid by the AD, the band raises funds to operate. Lastly, did Stanford fans you encountered act disrespectfully? I would much rather you held a memory of those who were sitting in the stands and walking the streets wearing Stanford gear and not a memory of a student group whose purpose is to rile up the opponent. I understand the situation; it was a blowout by halftime and then you had to watch that performance. At best, the show was stupid, but I wouldn't consider it offensive as others have labeled or something worth remembering.

I do understand the non traditional band and its history but it's time for a change. Oh public discourse and basic civics are going to get much worse in your lifetime. I bet you don't even know that once upon a time nearly every school in the USA had a mandatory civics class. That time is long gone. It's been replaced with various versions of this vvvvvvvv

Assembly Bill 420 – signed by Brown on Saturday – eliminates willful defiance or disruption of school activities as a reason to expel students.

Basically in Cali the students are in charge of the classroom. Considering the parenting they're getting at home, how do ya think that's workin out? Considering the teacher's union put Brown in office, I like the poetic justice.

Hmmmmmm, so you are comparing something that happens at every university to raping little boys. I mean it's not like the band members and football players are sexually assaulting woman, getting administrators fired for trying to cover it up, and then hazing and threatening a rape victim to keep quite. I know, that was a long time ago, it's not like the University of Iowa is having protest about sexual abuse issues anytime recently. Oh wait, it only took one day for the first incident in the new school year. The funny thing is that you are so sensitive that you let a bunch of 18 to 21 year olds troll you to death and make assumptions about a school based on that. See how easy it is to make assumptions off a few people.

My guess is if the result's were different we would not be hearing as much about the band.
