Baer

On talk radio yesterday they had on Chad Lysico(?) talking hawks and he seemed to think that there would be another transfer. Of course, he also said he wasn't sure they would give a scholarship to Baer. He also seemed pretty sure that Jok would be on the Hawks next year.

I think the kid plays hard but he's already on the team. Why not use the scholly to help make the team even better. Congrats to Nick but I don't agree.

I don't really think it would benefit the team to have two extra guys who are essentially "scholarship players" playing not on scholarship (Baer and Fran's sons). As we've already seen, it's just too much competition, especially if we want to see an uptick in recruiting. Iowa isn't currently enough of a name-brand school to hold that many high quality guys competing for playing time.

So why not just let them battle it out and the cream rise to the top? Because I think that it would be detrimental to team chemistry personally. Competition is good, but I just don't see that much competition within a team being that great of a thing.

So basically, I'm glad Fran gave Baer the scholarship, and unless we are bringing in very high quality players (like Tyler Cook, Malik Williams, Jordan Goodwin caliber players), then I think his sons should probably get them as well.

Congrats to Nick. Even if he is never a superstar, he seems to have guts and not be afraid to take big shots or perform when it matters. Iowa could use more guys like him, and I believe he'll be quite valuable for the next three years.

How do you not reward him with a scholarship? He stepped up in multiple games when our starters were flaming out and likely we lose a couple more without his contributions. Absolutely deserving of the scholarship in my opinion and glad it worked out for him. I would rather see a kid who truly appreciates the opportunity vs. the entitlement mentality of many. The kid can play, so this is not a charity offer.

I think Fran needs to step up with the final offer. If he banks, I will be very disappointed. There is somebody out there who can help this team next season given we have so many question marks, another potential transfer, and Jones rehabbing from his second ACL surgery. Unlikely, but Jok could opt out for Europe if he thinks that is a better training ground for the NBA. He is going to get a lot of input in the coming weeks.

This is a very stupid sentence.

Baer, as Fran rightfully emphasized, wasn't GIVEN a scholarship like Hutton, Fleming, and others, he actually came in and EARNED it. It is ludicrous to suggest Baer shouldn't have been rewarded when a scholarship opened. If those other guys played as hard as he does and had half his b-ball IQ, Iowa wouldn't be losing all these close games and going into late-season slumps.

If anybody on this Iowa team deserves a scholarship, it's Baer.

If Jok doesn't return, Baer might be our leading scorer next season.

We simply won't find two players at this point who will provide us with more than Nick would next year.

This is why we need to lower expectations next year. It is a complete rebuild. Doc and Moorehouse had very objective outlook next year that Iowa making the NIT next year would be a positive to build from. If they land a grad PG then bubble team is ceiling. Iowa has nice players but it's potential at this point and not much on returning production other than Jok. Iowa's 2nd least experienced team returning in Big Ten and not like they are bringing in 5* studs either. Doc said don't be shocked to see PSU, Nebraska, and Minnesota ahead of Iowa as they bring back more experience and have more talent.

Why is this a stupid sentence?

Outside of the Greek who left ISU to play professionally, who else has left college early to play in Europe? There's some merit to the idea but I can't think of any players who have done this.

Kellen Thomas from kent state put up 12.2 and 3.1 he reminds me of a bryce cartright would be a good 5th year guy until we get McCafrey and bohannon up to speed

betting that means Fran was unable to find a difference maker to come here as a transfer, really to bad...Iowa needs a couple!

Right, particularly since Fran had two open scholarships to work with and has been saying since early in the season that Baer had earned a scholly. You're such a troll, not a very good one but a troll none the less.

Do the math here Ace. Jok could get some interest from a couple teams and possibly be a late 1st round or middle second round draft pick. I doubt it, but the NBA loves shooters. He could also garner little / no interest and realize another year in college isn't going to change this. At that point, is going to Europe and making $125K a better / worse option than returning to a rebuilding Iowa team?

I have never gotten the vibe from Jok that he is a team above me guy. I think he believes he can play at the next level and will do what it takes to put himself in the best position to achieve this goal. If he returns and the team struggles, likely his numbers decline and he is not on anyone's radar. He seemed to be in / out of favor with Fran quite a bit as well, so who knows?

For those that don't agree that Baer deserved a schollie, I don't agree with you. But, you've already made your stances and Nicholas has already gotten the free ride, so moot point.

I'm not doubting the logic but there's little precedence in college players with remaining eligibility heading to Europe.

Do you understand hypothetical scenarios? To help connect the dots, if Jok does not see returning to Iowa as adding value to his resume, he may consider other options. I don't know what those options would be, but he is likely garnering more interest after this season than he would playing on an NIT Iowa team where he is the focal point of every defense without Uthoff.

The flip side, he could return, work on his dribble drive game and be the man next season and raise his stock.

Not one thing about a scenario of Jok going to Europe would make any sense unless he was not going to be able to graduate.

You don't leave college to go to Europe to get nba exposure.

You don't leave college to go to Europe at all, you end up there after you've exhausted other options.

Here's why Baer got a scholarship, because he deserves one.

When you don't give people what they've earned it creates a toxic environment that effects everyone. Similar to giving people things they haven't earned.

When you reward people for achieving it creates an environment of healthy competition that effects everyone.

There's a ton of it. Many more players declare for the NBA each year than there are actual spots for them. Some were just ill-informed about whether they'd be drafted, but a bunch of them just wanted to start getting paid somewhere.

Maybe Joks in a leisure study and getting a degree is not a high priority? A degree means more to some people than to others. He can make decent money in Europe or play for an average iowa team and risk injury. Not as dumb as ppl think

Good for the Baer. His play certainly earned a schollie. A lot of playing time just opened up and the Baer will have a head start on taking a big chunk.

He really does seem like the ultimate kind of havoc creating 6th man who can hit 3s. The kid has shown surprising agility around the basket on both ends. He also seems to have a very good nose for loose balls and long rebounds. Good a finding open players too. Probably not sufficiently strong to ever be a good rebounder. Just the kind of guy that fills up the stat sheet very nicely on quality minutes, though. A guy that breaks up the tempo of the game almost immediately.

Why don't you agree???? Should Baer and his parents shell out 10's of thousands of dollars, spend the next 20 years paying off student loans all while players behind him and on the bench are getting a full ride. It is not always about wins and loses....whether you agree or not (which shows your character) it is obviously the right thing to do

How many career ending injuries do you ever hear of in basketball?

Giving up a free degree to take a chance on a few hundred thousand is ridiculous when A. that same opportunity will almost certainly be there the next year and B. you're trying to get a shot at millions in the nba.
