I get that. But does skipping a year cost you a year of eligibility, while a prep school year doesn't?

It shouldn't. There's a kid in the '24 class that Iowa was briefly looking at, but never ended up offering. He's a mormon from Utah and is planning to do his mission year right after high school, so he would be taking a gap year as well. Have not heard of him losing any eligibility for doing that.

One scenario that would make sense is that Hutchison enrolled in a college but ended up not playing there. His eligibility clock would start because he was enrolled, but because he didn’t play, he could claim it as a redshirt year.

See he was defensive all conference in high school. Definitely will be a big help in practice. And possibly future scholarship player. Certainly no Austin Ash look to him.
