Ben Kueter

Prolly had to be tough with a name like Sherwyn.
For the folks who have followed the University of Iowa athletics for any length of time, and had the privilege watching Fort Dodge native Sherwyn Thorson, he will always be remembered.

On the mat or on the field, the 'Thumper' resides in a place of honor among University of Iowa athletes, and alumni.

Know I've mentioned it before, but he was my dad's neighbor in FD for a number of years and based on some stories my dad shared, he was quite an entertaining character in his later years. And obviously was an amazing 2-sport athlete. He set the bar high for Kueter. We'll see how he stacks up.

Followed Iowa for any length of time? I have followed the hawks for decades and lived in FD for a year. But I don’t remember hearing about Sherwyn. Evah….

If he excels at football, ie has serious NFL aspirations, he’d be a fool to wrestle, risking injury and a potentially lucrative pro career. Here’s to hoping hes a mediocre football player.
Is this some kinda Jedi mind trick?

This isn’t to say Iowa shouldn’t Recruit him, or that he isn’t talented, but this is a case of a kid being really good in the state, but not a prime recruit in the grand scheme of things. He isn’t ranked in the top 20 at his weight as he hasn’t fared as well nationally as he has locally. He was handled by Kasson’s 182 wrestling up a weight, for instance, who though he’s going to SDSU he’s 19th nationally at 182.
No expert on Hagerty but he did take 3rd at Fargo in both freestyle and Greco. Pretty sure he placed at cadet world team trials as well. To go along with a couple state titles. It’s absurd this kid is not nationally ranked.

edit: Kueter beat Hagerty 6-3 at UWW cadet nationals for 3rd place last summer.

You are correct sir. Hagarty lost to Sonny Sasso in the semis 13-6, dropped down and beat Neves who is now #10 at 220. Willie has Hagerty at #17.

Walrath was in our sectionals & districts most impressive wrestler there by far. Watched him at State and outside of maybe Voelkner he was most impressive 2A wrestler there. Hagarty is another one of those kids my son had the pleasure of wrestling growing up. Watched him a lot he is the real deal just kinda under the radar a bit.

Seems you may be looking in the wrong places. Some thoughts;
  • During your next visit to Carver Hawkeye Arena, check the trophy case/northwest corner. I believe you will find the University of Iowa’s acknowledgement of Sherwyn Thorson’s contribution to the Iowa athletic program.
  • If you have the opportunity to visit the National Wrestling Hall-of-Fame, you will find Sherwyn Thorson’s name and legacy listed under NCAA Champions; the University of Iowa.
  • And I might also suggest the next time you speak with Dan Gable, ask.
Go C-2

Old timer from the 60s I believe. I saw his obituary years ago (maybe 5 or so). If I recall his claim to fame was being the first Hawk to ever win a title at Hwt.

Walrath seems like a 184. I'm guessing Hagarty a 197.

His son's name is Tjeran. Tjeran's son, Asle plays football at ISU
I was wrong anyway. The guy I’m thinking of is Tram Thorsen. From FD and he was our delivery guy for Budweiser when I worked at The Sports Page. Guy was a monster. Think he may have played football at iowa as well tho. It’s foggy.
