Nice list. This has been covered in a thread in the past and also covered in an article in AWN. So many great wrestlers who did not win a title. Gable has mentioned before that Mike Deanna was the best 4 non champ AA.

Unless Sorensen beats Retherford for a title this year, he'll be on this list, probably even 'first team'. (4-2-3-2)

I know Zaputil was only a three time all american(three time finalist), so he doesn't belong on this list, but I cant recall who "kept" him out of the lineup his freshman year. Can anyone remember?

Great list BTW. Love this stuff. Duane Goldman came close but 2-2-2-1, but got there his senior year. Which was awesome.

GO HAWKS!!

Mike DeAnna was a great guy and a great coach as well. On top of the two times as runner up, he was also an Olympic alternate as well. :(

Steve Martin, who also kept Terry Brands out his freshman year.

Nice try. Never finished a season with a win.

Whoa...

So, HWC is taking off. How about the Hawkeyes- Mc D, Dennis, Gilman...not finishing at DI! Job isn't getting done by Iowa standards.
Guess what I am saying is Brands X2 aren't getting the results Iowa wants and is expected to get. I think both Tom and Terry will agree.

McD didn't finish? Who's pipe are you blowing?

Hope this isn't hijacking the thread but your post made me think of this. Who has won it as a freshman and then never won another one? Schlatter? NATO if he doesn't win this year? Others?

Penrith if first year in lineup (sophomore year) counts instead of freshman.

In 1965-66-67 Mike Caruso from Lehigh lost in finals all three years to Bob Fehrs by 1 or 2 points. Freshman were not eligible. I think those were Caruso's only NCAA wrestling losses.

It must be Opposite Day. Mike won all three.

Was it Fehrs that lost all three? Getting old, memory gone. I saw the 67 finals at Kent St.

Don Rohn (Clarion) won as a TrueFR. He ended up a 3x AA (1,3,dnp,6)

Matt Reiss, NC State 1980 from Bethlehem, Pa. Never even won a state championship.

They are having a similar discussion on FRL going weight-by-weight the last 10 years. Very interesting discussion. Gilman was the popular pick at 125 and Marion at 141.

The best wrestlers (not AA's) to not win a title are the dads of kids. Kids often tell me their dad could have been the state champ, but they had to ........ instead.
