Best Game I've Seen Iowa Play This Year

That was really fun. Good job to the small crowd that was there. Fantastic passing and that zone is a possible solution IF we stay active in it.

I said a week ago that I thought Dix should move into the starting lineup. I feel good about that :)

It was a well played game offensively. However, tons of defensive lapses and issues the 1st 25 minutes. Going to zone definitely seemed to help us defensively. Have to improve overall defensive effort as the shots won’t always fall like tonight.

Except for Michigan game, play well at home, struggle on the road. Next game at Minneapolis.

Against Michigan (who sucks ass btw and has lost 5 straight), Dix and Freeman only played a combined 33 minutes for 7 points. In this game, they played 59 minutes and scored 38. I think if Iowa wants any shot at the tourney, they're going to have to give Bowen, Harding, and Dembele almost no minutes just like this game. They simply dribble into trouble too much and aren't good enough 3 point shooters to keep teams from sinking into Freeman.

The Top8 in BPM has Dasonte 6th at +2.0, PMAC 7th at + 1.1 and Harding 8th at +0.8.

Teams will full court press Iowa at times, like Rutgers did,and there is a role for Bowen/Harding at PG.

Freeman has best BPM on team at +9.4.....but because he is only good post defender Iowa has, foul trouble, especially the 2-foul jail in 1st half will mean he's probably 30 mpg. What do you do when he's out? I think Braun at center makes some sense---assuming Braun progresses---he's too foul prone right now, but he does rebound very well.

Krikke can play some backup center---but that probably means Iowa needs to zone with Payton Sandfort at PF and PMAC at the SF.

Fran has to avoid his bizarre lineups where he has mostly the backups on the floor at same time, like Dimbele, Harding playing together. All the bench players beyond Harding have negative BPMs.

Harding and Freeman have very good 2-man game....It does seem like Harding could surpass Bowen this season if Harding's shooting improves. Harding was sold as a scorer, but his shooting form is disappointing and he's tends to hurry his shots as he is adjusting to better athletes at college level.

The shots won't always fall, but it also makes it really difficult when the ball stops moving, which Iowa has had a penchant for in most years, let alone this year.

They got good looks tonight because they kept the ball moving on offense, whether it was willingness to dribble drive and kick, make the extra pass, whatever the case, they never really got stagnant in that aspect and that led to better offense.

You can live with missed shots if you know you're still running good offense.

It's the sh** that Nebraska was falling into, and that we've seen our guys do before where it's, pass/catch/hold 3 or 4 times around the perimeter and out of boredom somebody chucks a 3 and everyone retreats to not play defense....................that's the sh** that kills us and ultimately pisses off the fans.

As others said, nice game on offense, but interior defense is awful. Lucky to see Nebby come back to reality. I don't think they are a top tier team in the B1G.

Nice to see Dix getting more minutes. He plays all aspect of the game well, and Iowa can't say that about very many players. Bowen seems to be in Fran's doghouse. I hope that is very temporary, because they will need him the next couple of years, and some this year. Dembele seems to be kind of lost, but not surprising with short minutes. Harding is also floundering some, and his shot is off. Patrick seemed to be playing with more effort than I have seen, which helps given the minutes he is getting. If the defense isn't somehow improved inside, it is going to be very hard for Iowa to finish in the top half of the league. Need to beat the Goofers, who also should start coming back to reality.

This was a nice win to boost our chances of making the NIT.......

Hopefully we can take some of this home court shooting on the road. Need to beat weak teams on the road to finish in upper half of Big10 and sniff a dance invite.

Harding needs more minutes IMO because he can break down a defense with his dribble penetration and he can create assists.

If you want to cut minutes for players who dribble into trouble then PMac has to be top of the list. How many times have we watched teammates hurriedly work to bail out PM after he has picked-up his dribble with no where to go?

Based on his last couple of games, Harding needs to watch more and play less.

This is a really good analysis. I’m not that knowledgeable about basketball but this makes a lot of sense to me. I think what you referenced at the end with Iowa retreating and never trying to hit the glass just so they can chill and not do shit on defense is why they are so inconsistent.

You can’t really expect to amass a lot of wins if defense is always an afterthought.

No.
