****** Iowa vs USC Game Thread******

USC is a bad shooting team against someone that actually plays defense. A mens city rec team could swing the ball side to side a few times and end up getting a decent look against Iowa

Yeah, I want to say it's a fluke because that's a bad and very ugly shooting USC team that just hit 65% from 3, but it's obviously not a fluke.

When a team can do whatever they want they make a lot of shots.
Their last road game they gave up 116 to the Badgers...set a Kohl center record.

USC just had their season high in pts.

Apparently the Hawks forget to play D on the road. :(

USC averages ~4k fans in a 10k seat arena. With the fires in LA, I would guess a smaller crowd tonight so we shouldn't be rattled by the fans.
This turned out to be true….most of their fans seemed pretty disinterested….(a la CHA)

T’s and P’s to LA though…🙏

Continue to blame Brock for the loss, it makes you so dumb, yes USC did take advantage of Brocks height early in the game, but so did they against Drew, Dix, Payton, and even Owen. Why aren't you complaining about Dembele or anyone else other then Brock? Surely you see others making mistakes that contributes to Iowa losing these games, why aren't you calling out those players?
What was the rebounding discrepancy 37 to 20, Brock is not out there for rebounding and again it doesn't appear no one on Iowa was on the floor to rebound either. Why haven't you complained every game about that in your rants or the defense from the other Hawks....
Oh, that's right, you only concentrate on Brock while he's on the floor, he's only a sophomore not a senior so yes, he is going to struggles in some games.
Notice Iowa doesn't have a 7 foot center for the other teams to concentrate on during the game, and our forwards love to take 3 point shots instead of driving to the basket, Iowa is a jump shooting team and when the shots don't fall it makes everyone look bad.
He'll get better despite you and others ragging on him during and after every game whether he deserves it or not. Yeah, you're not racist, you're just pissed that Brock beat out Drew for the starting point guard position, admit it and by the way how's your favorite player that left the team and went to St. Bonaventure, he must be injured because he not even listed on their roster.
If you have read through these forums you'd realize I consistently call out the poor rebounding, Payton's shot selection, team defense, etc. And I previously stated, I single out Brock's issues more due to your constant bragging about his skills. I'm your counterbalance. You're a whiny frickin cry baby. "Quit picking on my boy Brock. He's mr. Illinois. He's the greatest. He's mr. moline. Stop or I'll take my ball and go home!" Waaa Waaa Waaa

And Drew has definitely been out playing Brock as of late. If he wasn't Owen's best buddy would he be starting? How many Big10 teams or Power 4 teams could he start for? Not many. How many P4 offers did he receive? Not many. "he's only a sophomore, he's going to struggle". That's inexcusable. This is the Big10, not Moline HS. Play smart or sit down. As another coach stated, he's not doing what I'm paying him to do, he's going to sit. Get it old man?

Conference road wins aren't easy to begin with, but I'm sure the long travel, late start, & unfamiliar surroundings added to the difficulty,... Shake it off, long season ahead.
USC sucked hard at 3pt shooting and rebounding before the game last night.

Yet, somehow looked like the NCAA leaders in both during the game.

Combine that with the @WISC game and this isn't a blip. Its a pattern.

Mostly it is, he's the head coach and the last time I looked he's getting paid lot's of money to coach the players, he's a very good offensive coach, but doesn't give a damn about defense and rebounding or doesn't have the expertise or assistances to teach the latter 2 important aspects of the game. He should have been replaced with a younger coach and one that values all 3 aspects of the game, but like getting the students near the floor of Carver, replacing Fran is not on Beth's agenda any time soon.
So are the players. How many 18-22 year old college students are getting paid $100K+? They need to be held accountable as well. I don't care who the coach is, players can and should take defense and rebounding personally. Both are about effort and fundamentals. Obviously Fran doesn't spend enough time emphasizing this, but the players can do something about this themselves by boxing out, hustling and playing smarter. Not totally deflecting away from Fran, but players need to take some pride and hold each other accountable as well.

But you probably want Moling HS coach on the staff, huh?

USC shot 65% from three. I could be wrong, but I'll say they don't shoot that well again from three in a game where they take 10+.

Brock Harding provided a clear illustration as to why Iowa's 3pt defense is so disgustingly bad, or at least inconsistent.

On one of USC's many 3pt makes, he was stuck out of position at the top corner of the paint as the ball came around to his corner behind the arc, and instead of showing any kind of hustle to at least provide the shooter the distraction of running at him, he just stops and watches the complete wide open guy hoist and splash it. To be clear, he never would have gotten there or affected the shot in any way, but he completely quit and just stood there like he was a robot and something cut his power.

To make things worse, he didn't even attempt to get into position for a possible rebound or even to look at leaking out for a fast break opportunity with a miss + Iowa rebound and getting the ball going the other way.

Just completely stopped all motion and stood rooted there.

USC (10-6, 2-3) is a tough team to figure out. They just won at Illinois but previous to that game they had only one P5 victory. Looking at the stats they are not a great team either. They are 5-5 in last ten games and they do not shoot or rebound well.

All that said, they best Iowa 88-79
I don’t think I have ever bet on basketball, but I am kicking myself for not taking SC at that line! Talk about a betting gift from Heaven….

I'm guessing teams like USC going forward are going to look forward to playing us to the point their confidence will be through the roof before they even get to the arena. Just knowing you're going to get open looks all over the floor would get me pumped to play. Eveyone has seen the scores/stats and knows we shouldn't even really bother going to the other end of the floor.

Hey now. That could be the answer. Just use the Grinnell game plan. Don't worry about defense at all, and try to score 125-140pts/gm. Well shoot, Payton would need to play two complete halfs to make that work..

I get it, but USC is a football school. And LA is more of a pro sports town than a college town. Especially when USC football & UCLA basketball haven't shown much recently.

My point is more about the Poster's that say Lack of support by Iowa fans is reason why the program is so-so. We just got beat by a team that nobody in LA area cares about and has about 1/3 the fan support that Hawks get. They have a young coach with past success and he brought in more stud athletes ins his 1st year than Fran has brought in to Iowa in 15 years. Our guys looked like skinny wimps.

I think it takes a mix of Iowa native players and outside talent and FRan has not yet figured out that mix and how to coach them up
to be more than 0.500 B1G team over 15 years. Nothing he has done in past suggests the future will be different.

Not too difficult to recruit kids to come to LA. But yeah, I get your point.

I personally am just tired of the same s*** season after season and being pounded on by anyone on any night. McCaffery really needs to go IMO.

Worst game by the Iowa backcourt this year, especially in the first half when Dix and Thelwell seemed to be totally passive and almost not there. Owen played pretty well, but USC's centers are their weakness. When you give up layups and wide open 3s almost every time down and don't rebound, you just can't win. The Sandfort bro's spend more time following their man to the basket on defense than doing anything else on that end. A week or so ago, Fran mentioned how well Pryce plays on defense. What is he looking at?

Not much positive to say, except that Freeman is finally playing with a lot more energy. The game was made worse by the announcers who didn't know a damn thing, except facts they were being fed during the game. The officiating, where every reach was a foul whether there was any contact or not, made the game even harder to watch. Sure would be nice to see a better effort Friday against UCLA.

Ladji needs a little more Tadjo aggression in his game.
Chris has a little bull in the China shop style..ladji needs to break some China.
