You have to hire outside the current staff and I think Beth will.Maybe not, but he’s next in line if titles mean anything. Who else on staff? Lester?

Is there an obvious candidate out there that is vastly superior to the coaches/staff we have in place? In basketball I feel there are obvious candidates - but I'm not so sure in football. But I'm open to ideas. You have to hire outside the current staff and I think Beth will.
Just read the print version in the Press-Citizen, and I didn't find anything significant in it, with the possible exception that Beth sounds like a huge KF fan, so unless something shocking happens, it sounds like we're stuck with the grand old man for many more years. Speaking for myself, I found that greatly disappointing. And there wasn't much said about Fran, but I also came away with the impression Fran's here at least until his contract expires. No buyouts seem remotely on the radar in either football or men's basketball. Beth, somewhat surprisingly to me, sounds like she's just fine with the status quo while admitting men's basketball attendance is a problem.
So buckle up. KF may stick around until he's 90, and it sounds like Fran will be around til he walks away. Not exactly what I was hoping to hear.
Iowa would be mentally impaired to let Tyler Barnes leave for any reason Coaching change included. He does a outstanding job and Iowa is lucky to have Him and any incoming Coach would retain Him unless He Himself is mentally impaired. at any rate I would almost Guarantee the next Iowa HC is either Tim Lester or Seth Wallace to keep Program and roster continuity and culture . and Barnes will stay in His present role and Kirk will have plenty of time with Grandkids and Family close. Bringing in an outside Coach would be very risky and I see Iowa doing what Michigan did when pool boy left and promoting from within,I think BG can expedite KF's departure by hiring someone already on staff so Ferentz' son in law keeps his job.
I really think that's one of a few reasons he's still the HC.

2 conference championships, 3 division titles, 4 conference coach of the year, 2 national coach of the year and our only BCS level bowl win in the last 65 years.....oh, and 204 games. Other than that, not much.....Just curious, what has he won?
I know for a fact this is not true in the business world. In fact, quite the opposite. IMO it is a roll of the dice either way unless you have totally incompetent internal staff.Successful Organizations promote from within
We’ll see. Based on what we’re seeing now, it seems he is changing his recruiting style some.I don't think NIL is the problem with Fran. He wasn't getting it done before NIL became a thing. I doubt more NIL will change the status quo much and I think most fans believe the same. The hope is gone with men's basketball unfortunately.
Lol. That was my first thought as well. Is she really going to say something revealing or scandalous in an interview like that? It’s really shocking she didn’t come out and say she didn’t like Kirk and she was looking to fire him.
Just shocking.
Hoping Kirk sticks around to get 300 wins. Assistant coaches may not have a choice. A head coach may come in and bring his own coaches. Some outside of Iowa may not hold PP with the same love as some Iowa fans. Why not? He’ll be in his 60s with a great career of achievement. If Wallace takes over I could see him staying on a couple of years but he’s not going to start over somewhere.

I get what you’re saying but there’s candidates all over the place. Coordinators, guys in the NFL, etc. there’s no surefire guy for most programs when making a change. IU hired the coach from James Madison. Is there an obvious candidate out there that is vastly superior to the coaches/staff we have in place? There isn't much need for other entertainment during the NCAA Wrestling Championships. You literally have a few hours between sessions to grab lunch/supper. The rest of the 3 days are spent in the arenas watching the 6 sessions. Restaurants and hotels are pretty much all that's needed.Des Moines and Omaha are the only metro areas under 1 million population to host the NCAA Wrestling Tournament in the past 20 years. And both of those are much larger than Iowa City/Cedar Rapids. It's my understanding they moved to larger cities not just because of the arenas, but because of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options as a whole.

Only the organizations with existing, unhealthy cultures. So do unsuccessful organizations.
You also have to be cognizant about the “Iowa situation” and the realities of B10 and college football today. She understands that short of raping a cheerleader Kirk has EARNED the right to walk away when he feels he should. I know that upsets you greatly but that is the reality of the situation. There are a lot of us Iowa fans out here who support Kirk and think there’s a pretty good future for Iowa football in the next few years.Haven't read anything so this is dart-throwing, but could she just be saying what one should say at this point? He is a good person and has done good things for the program, school, and state. We weren't going to hear a "he needs to do A, B, and C or I'm firing his arse!" coming from her. I get the disappointment, but we have to be real about it.
Iowa athletics as a whole is sitting in fairly good shape. It could definitely be a lot worse.
Why hand over a big 10 program to an assistant? Being a head coach is light years different then being an assistant.I’m just going to say it: Wallace ain’t it. My opinion is just that. And may be valueless, but I firmly believe he isn’t, even if we are looking at the current staff.
The facts will prove you wrong. Many men’s and women’s sports at Iowa have improved the 5 years. You are indeed a harsh critic.Iowa athletics has become average compared to what we've had in the past. The CC years overshadowed to a large part the other programs but now the total focus is back on them. Mens football and basketball, womens basketball are average with the womens bball maybe slipping below that.
At least we can count on the womens wrestling team to be dominant.
JFC! Who on this board knows the answers to these questions? Do you? Let's hear what yah got.If it were to be internal:
Regardless of the accolades and respect of the current staff, in recent history, IOWA has had problems. Some are intermittent, or recurring, or long-standing. People complain about solutions perpetually. So...
It really should be easy to identify that, IF this were the scenario. IF TS continues to demonstrate improvement with his assignment, and IF he stays, IMO he WOULD be a serious candidate.
- Who on the current staff has addressed, and is addressing issues, in an expedited and capable fashion?
- Who truly is scratching where it itches?
- Who has CFB head coaching experience?
The facts will prove you wrong. Many men’s and women’s sports at Iowa have improved the 5 years. You are indeed a harsh critic.
Sorry to disappoint you but that doesn’t upset me greatly. I am ready for a change and won’t deny that but also can recognize what has been done. He is a good man, and I appreciate all he has done on and off the sideline. But I’m ready to start anew. You also have to be cognizant about the “Iowa situation” and the realities of B10 and college football today. Looking at 4 wins with some luck next year and probably less in 2026. That is how. This program has no talent. The new qb will help but he was at South Dakota for a reason. There is no way she should let Kirk go. How in the hell is Iowa ever get another respectable coach when you fire the coach that has set all sorts of Big ten records for winning ???
Maybe he was overlooked or developed late? Kurt Warner, Jerry Rice, and Randy Moss seemed to be good players even though they were FCS. The Davey O'Brien winner this year (Cam Ward) started in FCS for two years at Incarnate Word. Seems a bit naive to discount this QB just because he played at South Dakota.Looking at 4 wins with some luck next year and probably less in 2026. That is how. This program has no talent. Johnny U. Arguably one of pro footballs best QBs ever okayed FB at Louisville…long before Louisville is what it is today.Maybe he was overlooked or developed late? Iowa under Ferentz has never had a “QB coach” per se. QBs have always been under the guidance of the OC. Just like they are now under Lester. Semantics might have changed but the facts are basically the same as 1999.Like how Brian was promoted to QB coach?
That would mean he would coach here for another dozen years (at least) and be 81 years old standing on the sidelines chomping his gum (gums?). No thanks!Hoping Kirk sticks around to get 300 wins. But I suspect he does another year or two.
I had experience doing both. It all depends on the personnel. Never got burned from my choices. No, successful organizations fund the best and right leadership from a variety of places. My older brother brother has attended over 40 NCAA's. My boys and I have attended 25 or so all over the country. There is absolutely nothing better in my opinion. That being said, I loved Des Moines because Wrestlefest was in a building next door and because of the skywalk everything was pretty much indoors. Iowa City is Wrestle Town USA. If Carver was bigger I believe we would host it occasionally. I would say 90% of wrestling fans are there for the tournament and couldn't care less about other attractions in March. As a person who has attended a number of tournaments, we have visited local tourist destinations either before or after the tournament.
shut upYeah let’s get rid of a coach that puts us on the map Nationally year in and out almost. Sent as many to NFL as the likes of ND TX MI and LSUs, as well as would have been in the playoffs 3-4 times in today world.
My god what do you all think, we’re goin to take over GA or Bama and be the top of CFB?? Get a friggin clue, yall never left the state of Iowa I assume??
Oh wait he can’t keep up with the times, NIL etc. lol got Cade (best option at time) got Gronk, as well as Jackson and others, again you’re all clueless!! Shut up and donate or you dot get a voice!! Welcome to todays CFP.
“The beatings will continue until the morale improves” school of leadership? You have to fix problems that really exist…. You don’t have to look for problems that aren’t there.I think Goetz is going to turn out to be very much a coaches AD. I seriously doubt she is going to make many waves as she gets settled into a big time job. Too bad. We needed someone with a huge red pencil!
