Betts to NYG

Ladell Betts is leaving to join the New York Giants in the same role. Steve Ferentz is currently a defensive assistant there as well, so Daboll seems to be utilizing the Ferentz coaching tree.

This is a bummer. It seems that Betts was doing a great job.
Big loss there. He’s done a great job recruiting and maintaining that room. Wish him well though!

Giants are a mess as an organization and the draft picks they make at qb. Dabol might be an offensive genius but he’s no head coach. OC material that’s about it.

Best wishes to Betts. But getting a sad coz betts might've been our best offensive coach / recruiter

This honestly makes no sense to me. Betts is leaving his alma mater, that also happens to be one of the most stable programs in all of college sports from a coaching standpoint, for a lateral move at what might be the most dysfunctional franchise in the entire NFL. He could make that move any year he wanted to, given his pedigree as a player in the NFL and what he's done at Iowa to this point. Makes you wonder what happened behind the scenes. I love Tim Lester, but maybe a difference of opinion happening?

Possibly. But also he feels his stock won't get any higher after coaching one of the best ever at Iowa. Strike while the iron is hot. But to the NYG?? SMH

I just never think of Iowa ever having even average running backs. We’ve always had studs in the backfield since at least like 2012 to 2013. Heck even when we were bad running the ball it was Brian Ferentz and the offensive line, not Kaleb Johnson and co.

What's Sedrick Shaw up to these days?

JK, I always find it a little annoying when a coaching spot opens up and folks here suggest former players. I don't know what percentage of coaches on other staffs are former players. Having a couple is OK but too many seems like it could be a problem. Hawks had 4 at one time and that probably was too many.

Betts did have a pretty great NFL career as a #2/3rd down back. Was the primary guy for only one year I believe and put up really good numbers.

Serious? Not a lateral move, not even close.

The move up to the professional level makes sense from a both a financial and career vantage point ….essentially when you consider Ferentz’ age and impending retirement.

Yeah, I am serious. It's lateral in the sense that it's the same position coach role that he currently has. And he's going to probably the worst run franchise in all of the NFL. That head coach is getting fired next year....most likely mid season. Why go somewhere when you'll literally be out of a job in less than a season. I'd rather stay and make bank until the right franchise opening came.

Wow talk about reading everything negative

NFL pays more.
No recruiting or travel
hard to advance at Iowa
Even if the giants do fire everyone wont be hard for him to get another nfl power 4 RB coach job so little risk

OK I’ll call Ladell and tell him you said he is making a big mistake. It’s possible that he acted irrationally and has not seriously considered the risk of accepting an NFL offer. Stay tuned, he may change his mind.

I'd prefer Shonn Greene.

Think the pay difference isn't huge anymore but a big yes to the other points

You’re crazy to think this is a lateral move. Getting experience in the pros will give him more credibility to come back in a bigger role in the future (OC? HC?)

I’d bet Lester has a big say on who he wants training the running backs. I’d also bet it’s a very in good one.

Yes, cant do much better than recruit KalebJ and work him up to a top RB. Tough loss on the coaching staff.

Iowa usually gets some very good RB recruits so need a very good recruiter and coach to come in and do the jib

Well much more run to go up in the rushing rankings at the Giants than to go down. But greatOLine blocking is out of the control of the RBack coach
