"Yanjun Xu and Ji Chaoqun, who were both convicted of espionage, were granted clemency last month, along with Shanlin Jin, who was convicted of possession of more than 47,000 images of child pornography"

Bro downloaded the entire hunter biden laptop apparently. Did we get another drug abusing wnba star for these guys?

prisoner exchange is ok but is it customary for them to receive presidential pardons?

Who'd we get?

“Three Chinese nationals were traded for three Americans held in Chinese custody and accused of being spies: Mark Swidan, Kai Lee and John Leung.

Families for the three Americans say they are due to land in San Antonio, Texas late Wednesday evening.”

Weird how China wanted someone in possession of 47,000 child pron photos

That’s how prisoner exchanges work.
No it isn't. A president doesn't have to pardon a prisoner to exchange them. They should still considered criminals in this country, and if they were to be found inside it again, they should face whatever remains on their sentences. In fact, they should face additional espionage charges.

Mark Swidan is an American designer, artist, photographer and businessman[1] from Houston, Texas. He was detained in China from 2012 to 2024. In 2019, Swidan was charged with drug trafficking in China and sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by a court in Guangdong.[2] on April 14, 2023, the Guangdong court upheld the sentence.[2] The U.S. government and the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention considered Swidan wrongfully detained.[2] He was released on November 27, 2024, as part of a prisoner swap with China.[3]

Kai Li was born in Shanghai, and he was returning to the city for a ceremony to mark the one-year anniversary of his mother's death. However when his plane landed, he was met not by his family, but state security agents -- beginning a years-long ordeal that resulted, in July 2018, in him being sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage.

— John Shing-Wan Leung
Beijing claims an American citizen jailed for life in China earlier this year is a decorated spy who had worked for US intelligence for more than three decades, as it ramps up a campaign warning citizens to guard against foreign espionage.

John Shing-Wan Leung, a 78-year-old US citizen who also holds permanent residency in Hong Kong, was sentenced to life in prison by a Chinese court in May on espionage charges.

Moral of the story.....NEVER GO BACK
