Of course shooting the lights out does not hurt but, we were so slow to the ball on defense. Most of Purdue's threes were wide open and most of Iowa's threes were with a hand in our face.

Garza can't do it all, maybe a defensive Nunge would have helped?

Would love to have pay back in the Big 10 tourney.

The formula to beat Iowa is simple. Play aggressive defense on CJ and Weezy and limit their production to 8-12 points. Garza will still get his 25-30 points, but no one else on the team is a scoring threat. Kriener has been good most of the season, but he has regressed the last 4 games and has become a non-factor offensively. Connor is also not a reliable scorer. The rest of the team are below average offensive players. Touissant has lots of potential, but he plays out of control and is a horrible shooter at this stage.

Super disappointed in the effort tonight on both ends of the court. We are fine at home but turn into Coe college on the road.

Of our 8 players that Fran uses during games, only 3 of them needs to be guarded by the opposition. The rest of them have no offensive skill to cause opponents to worry about them, heck most of the time they don't even look to shoot and when they do take shots they brick most of them. Yes, we're better at home but on the road, we are very pedestrian.....

Payback will be issued March 3rd @ CHA....

nothing would have helped much last night, but wish Evelyn would kick in a little bit more on offense. when he was announced as a transfer, I sure thought he would be better than this. gotta give him credit for that Cincinnati game though, as we don't win without him.

We need a small but consistent amount of offense from McCaffery, Toussaint, Kreiner & Evelyn to keep the opposing defense honest,... It's a game of pieces, and every team is short a few...

I don't think the opponents can learn much from that game, other than dazzling shooting can beat the Hawks. Yes, they had a LOTS of open looks, but they made .... ALL of them.

Just need to move on ...

I do think teams sagging off Joe T to provide double teams on Garza could be a problem if we don’t adjust.

Double Garza off Joe T...leaves 3 to guard 4. But in reality, only need 3 to guard 2 or maybe 3 if Connor knocking down shots.

Need to force doubles to come from Joe W or CJ side, if at all possible. Or more cutting/screening when those doubles come, to get our shooters open looks.

Iowa’s offense last night was about as bad as the defense. Weak cutting, weak screening, terrible spacing, no offensive rebounding. They let Purdue dictate everything. It was just a terrible game on both ends. Learn from it and move on.

Exactly. We will see if it's more of a 1-off or a trend. The effort from start to finish was just awful, no other way to put it. Yes, Purdue made everything they put up, but when you give a team a ton of confidence by allowing them multiple open looks, layups and dunks, that is what can happen.

As the season has gone on and more data is there, teams are definitely more serious about trying to make anyone other than Garza, Wieskamp and Frederick shoot. Iowa doesn't need the other guys to put up huge numbers, but the occassional double-digit outing from Toussaint, Evelyn, Connor or Kriener would be helpful.

Really, the default play should be a JT entry pass to Garza and immediately sprint opposite to set a screen for CJF or Wieskamp coming across for an open 3.

Forces the opposition to choose if they are sending JT's man at Garza and leaving no help on the screen to get an open 3 point shooter, or if they are respecting the 3 point shooter and leaving Garza 1v1.

A better strategy. Make Iowa play a road game. Oh wait.....or is that how to beat Purdue?

That was a bad game for Iowa, but Purdue was makign threes whether they were wide open or not. I saw several threes go down when an Iowa defender was pressed up against the guy with a hand in his face. Purdue probably won't produce like that again this year. They are tough as hell at Mackey,t hough. Iowa gets them at CHA in a couple weeks and Purdue has sucked on the road this year so we'll see if last night was just an anomaly or if Purdue has finally figured out how to put it all together and they are actually a really good team.

This. For the complaints about the defense, they made a lot of shots when they were really well guarded as well. The biggest glaring issue last night was the number of 2nd and third chance baskets they got especially in the first half.....

It’s that simple, Shon Morris was talking about that last night. Did we ever do it? Nope
C.J. and Wheezy would have a open look every time. Sometimes our guys make the game so complicated.

I'm no basketball guru so I'm not even gonna try to comprehend game plan and strategy :D.

That said, I think it's safe to say it is NOT easy to get 2 of the best shooters in b1g "open looks" every time......

Getting open looks for JT/CMAC....I'll buy that.

Then you probably shouldn’t question what Shon Morris and I are talking about. You clearly are clueless about basketball and do us all a favor and stfu!

Ok boomer! (little old to be an E-tough guy, aren't you gramps?)

Go ahead and name the good b1g shooters that are open every time.

Can't wait to see this list.
