The Big 10 was partner in the grand-daddy of all bowls, The Rose Bowl.
The Big 10 decided to add Penn State almost 30 years ago and that started a seismic shift in college sports.
The Big 10 was the first to start it's own television network.
The Big 10 has been a forward thinking conference since its inception. The schools themselves being inclusive in the realm of ideas; gender and race.
The U of Iowa helped reinvigorate the Big 10 in 1981 when Iowa broke the stranglehold Michigan/Ohio State had on the conference. Soon after 1981 the other schools were getting their moment in the sun, which strengthened the conference as a whole.
Nebraska jumped from the Big 12 to the Big 10 when given the chance. Why? Cuz they could see who was ascendant in the super-conference sweepstakes.
So, let the debate begin as to which conference is better and how that affects a given school's history!?!?
