After the Wisconsin game, the After the Game Show on the
BTN had some comments about the Iowa Hawkeyes style
of play. One commentator said: "Iowa was not disciplined on
offense or defense. However, Wisconsin was and that was the
difference in the game".

It seems obvious that the Hawkeyes are not well-coached,
as their present team displays no game plan whatsoever
Keegan Murray needs a stronger supporting cast. We need
to rebound better and have a higher percentage of made shots.
We are not headed for even a .500 record in the Big Ten.

Right now, Iowa is playing pickup basketball with a little structure to it.

We can call it "pickup basketball", or "playground ball"
or "free lance hoops", yet it still comes down to an
absence of any coaching plan for victory. Where does
the Head Coach Fran have any input?

Iowa went 1-3 in 1st 4 conference. 20 game conference schedule, right? Do they continue the trend and finish 5-15 in conference?

All 3 games were expected Hawk losses beforehand. Next few games are more winnable. Better discipline is needed. No rhyme or reason in play a couple times last night as the team concept went awol.

I don't pretend basketball expertise.....but it is common knowledge and easy to see (even for regular fans) that Fran is a high level OFFENSIVE coach. It has been obvious that his style is fast paced and free flowing on the offensive end.....I don't think that equates to undisciplined. This seems like the typical over reaction to a bad loss. It also seems obvious that when playing a team like Wisconsin, who's style is very structured, that it would appear that Iowa's style is undisciplined in contrast...but that would just be a superficial appearance.

Defensively it is a different ballgame....certainly Fran has left himself open to criticism about defensive issues. It seems as though a lack of discipline to defensive assignments and principles is a problem.

We might well finish below .500 in conference play...I really don't like that as a fan, but I also knew coming into this year that this was an inexperienced team (showed it last night at Wisconsin) and that we were in a rebuilding mode.

If Connor and JBo don't play more than ten combined minutes we'll get better defensively.

yes rebuilding year, yet Keegan growth from Freshman year is off the charts. Wisconsin with basically 1 star and 4 meh players is way better than Iowa with 1 star and 4 meh players. It is up to Fran to get the 4 surrounding pieces to work better around Keegan.

At this point based on how they are playing, I suspect Iowa is an 8 B1G win team. Wisconsin looks like an upper division team...so maybe 12 B1G wins. The difference between the two teams is one team plays better defense and rebounds.

There is no reason Fran can't get this group to play better defense/rebound better. The fact that he can't/won't self evaluate himself and is off the charts stubborn is why he is meh as coach. Season is still early....Fran can turn it around....I think 0.500 in B1G is what he should be able to do....if he fails, then why isn't he fair game for crticism as a high paid public figure?

No wonder we're not looking cohesive. Defense fuels the offense, especally the transistion offense Fran loves to play. Anyone who has played basketball knows that. The bottom line is that there are very obvious fixes but Fran refuses to betray his loyal seniors. A switch up in a starting lineup needs to happen now - we need to establish physicality and defensive rebounding!

I don't necessarily disagree with your assessment....but coaches and teams often develop or play at different levels than what we think they should. Michigan is currently a good example of that. They were very highly rated before the season and just have not played well in spite of having tremendous talent on that team. Howard's coaching? Maybe....but last year was pretty damn good for them.

MSU and Izzo.....continually have talent and athleticism....and this year they are doing pretty well, but not so much last year.

Last year Wisconsin had a veteran team and good talent....and yet Iowa beat them 3 times. Was Guard a bad coach last year? Was Fran a better coach last year? The answer appears to me to be that it's not that simple to say so and so is a bad coach, just because at that time things aren't going well OR because a season wasn't good.

I like it! I think it’s time to let Big O loose and see what he can do. We have no inside presence at all.

A think a problem with this team is that no one outside Keegan truly has a role on the court. The minutes dispersed are so sporadic. A player haveing a very good game may sit long periods of time for no apparent reason. Example is Toussaint sitting I believe last 6-7 minutes of a very close Maryland game when he had 9pts and 9ast at the time.
