Truth is, he’s not even close to the same player he was as a sophomore. No junior film and a season missed because of injury. He’s a legit 6-5 250 lbs now and an incredible athlete for that size. The 5.6 rating isn’t accurate, and will improve.

He also fits the mold of the rare outside pass rushing presence that’s big enough to stop the run but mobile enough to disrupt in the passing game. There is a reason why he was coveted by Notre Dame (visited twice), and had he not been injured there would have been much more competition for his commitment.

Iowa, and even more so ISU (but they’re the little brother in the state so not really), let one get away here. I realize the Hawkeyes have 7 Defensive Ends committed, but looking closer at the list, only Logan Jones appears to be someone who was highly sought after.. the other 6 are your usual Iowa recruitment battles of ISU and Minny and KState type schools, then a bunch of MAC or Dakota or FCS types.

It appears Nebraska will continue to have a presence cherry picking the best talent out of the state each year. TJ Bollers has already visited Lincoln four times.

Yawn, Nebraska troll comes over to tell us what isn't true. Looking for affirmation and praise for accomplishments in the 1990s.

Oh boy, he visited ND and didn't get an offer.

Look at the current 247 composite rankings.

13. Jones
30. Lois
34. Gunnerson
35. Black
36. Witt

We're also still in on Deontae Craig, ranked 27th.

Pretty sure we won't miss Gunnerson. He was a bigger loss for ISU.

Black is the guy that is underrated. Kid has the size and athletic ability. If he was down south he’d be a much much higher rated guy. He’s probably the guy I’m most excited about so far in the class. Craig will be a good addition as well when we land him. Gunnerson would have been a guy I’d have liked to get but never really seemed all that into Iowa and Iowa seemed to move on rather quick to other guys. He won’t be missed. Iowa state really missed on him though

Those are based off Gunnerson’s film as a 195lb 16 year old sophomore who missed his entire Jr season of high school football....... he’s now 6’5” and 250 lbs but moves like an athletic OLB. That’s a specific and highly coveted mold in today’s game.

Want to make a friendly wager that Gunnerson’s composite, and Rival’s ranking, are better than every DE you just listed when the final 2020 Position rankings are released?

Gunnerson will be a 4 star. He will be the #1 player in Iowa.

He won’t jump Jones. I’ll take that wager. You guys are all happy in the pants that he got invited to the all American bowl game. Jones has been invited to that for months. Fact is Gunnerson has the build but hasnt done anything in high school even yet. He had like 20 tackles and 4 sacks as a sophomore and missed all year with an injury his jr year. So what did he do? Got bigger! Good for him but let’s let him get some productivity first before you just look at his size he put on and think he’ll be an all American.

That’s funny. Because I have Gavin Williams transferring, adding 10 pounds, shaving .18 off his 40, and increasing his bench 8 reps this summer catapulting from #4 to #2.

The only reason he won’t get past Logan, is because Logan is a legit “one and done” - although we both know he has to stay in school for two (or three of you listen to MepoDawg, who is, apparently, a draft guru ;) )

Anyhow, our talent, development, depth, sending players to the NFL [EARLY] will still be here. Our phase two improvement [Kirk 2.0 with Brian OC] is just starting to kick into third gear.

We’ve also changed our off-season workouts to further maximize our lead in the strength and power department. Which will translate into crushing the pathetic, fat, underdeveloped lines that NU continues to throw out year after year.

Seriously, too easy. NU will be the 5th or 6th best team we play this year. We’ll be your 2nd or 3rd.

You need to go into the hip hop recording industry, cause you're a Spin Doctor. Not the first potentially good player Debra had had and won't be the last. "Cherry picking the best talent in the state", what a joke. You must be a member of the fake news establishment. Dumbass.

Notre Dame coveted Gunnerson so much they never offered him an athletic scholarship.

Its a common phenomenon: recent commitments are hyped, sometimes over-hyped, by their respective fan bases - the OP is engaging in the latter. Conversely, prospects who commit elsewhere are sometimes marginalized, even downgraded, once the recruiting battle is lost - some Iowa fans will engage that way.

Bottom-line: high school rankings are not determinative on how a prospect will perform in college. Except for a handful of exceptional athletes, everyone agrees that development is the key to future success. That would include Gunnerson who is indeed a very good athlete. So whether his final Rivals rating is 5.6, 5.7, or 5.8 really doesn't matter in the long run.

Not to nit pick but football players have to be three years removed from high school to be draft eligible.

The difference is that I didn't run to the Cornholer board to school them on anyone that committed to Iowa, ever. It IS totally normal for fans of the same team to talk to each other about future players. Trolling another team's site to rub a recruit in their face is so pathetic only a Nubby or Clone fan would do.

But that doesn’t fit the narrative of the fuskers and their priority in winning the mythical tri-state recruiting trophy.

We’re not losing Bollers to Neb.

Either he blows up and goes to a blue-blood (Michigan, Alabama, Ohio State), or Iowa proves to be the best program for the development of an undersized, potential stud DE.

Or our coaches decide that, despite his four star ranking he’d not exactly the fit they’re looking for and pass - as they’ve already maxed out recruiting 2021 DE and are focusing on their 2022 and 2023 classes.

All the while Nebby is on to plan C with their 2020 class.

But Bollers is nobody’s plan C, so I’m pretty sure you don’t get him.

So why did the Blue Blood programs not recruit him? You only need MAC type players to beat UNL.

Agree OP. Will be shocked if Blaise doesn't end up a 4* top 250 recruit and 1# player in Iowa (assuming he stays healthy). Writers on Husker Online think he'll be borderline top 100. He did get and invite to the AA Bowl.

Not sure what's going to happen with Bollers, but he seems to have legit interest in Neb. I'd give Iowa an edge atm, but if Neb has a good season...who knows. Wouldn't be impossible to end up with 2019 and 2020 #1 Iowa recruits in Lincoln.

Iowa did try to get back in it with Gunnerson late...clearly someone they would have liked to have.

Yeah, that made ZERO sense to me as well!
So they have no tape of how he can play in games, but he's a straight up baller? OK LOL

Hope he has a good season this year, or he better have some backup plans. I'm sure frosty won't have a problem kicking him to the curb if he doesn't show up in his games......

Jesus, is that 3 Husker posters here to brag at us about beating Iowa State for a recruit? Decades ago Nebraska played for National Championships (give a Husker fan 3 seconds and he’ll have told you about it 11 different times). Now they’re thumping their chests on a Hawkeye website about their recruiting coup over the Clowns.

Weird.

Well when you are 8-16 the past two seasons and have lost four in a row to your conference rival, you have to claim victories where you can find them, even if they are imaginary.

Agree. Bollers is bigtime. The world won't end if he leaves but it will definitely be disappointing if that happens.

I agree, but man if Nebraska gets a top legacy recruit in Iowa’s back yard that would be quite the blow. Imo regardless of how many DE we take this year he needs to be priority #1

This guy is one of my favorites over here because of how boisterous his predictions are...ya gotta love it. But this is rich, stating “Nebby is on to Plan C” with the ‘20 Class.

LMAO - did you just attempt to talk sh*t about recruiting? Iowa’s whole class is made up of kids that Nebraska (or most successful Top 50 programs) haven’t and won’t offer. That’s 80% of your class; we wouldn’t even bother...and we offer 400+.

I know Iowa thinks they can develop their way above their 8 win regular season ceiling, and once every 10-12 years that happens, but that’s quite the cute little comment there, @HawkNole09.

You’ll long wish for the days of Mike Riley, when things were so much fun for that stretch of 5 years. The truth is that Nebraska owns Iowa. Always have. 29-17 overall. Iowa has 2 wins since WWII against coaches not named Mike Riley.

Do you all really think that suddenly a team that can’t recruit better than 80% MAC level prospects, despite developing them very well, will ever truly compete with a Blueblood like Nebraska that lives in the Top 20 range.

I know it’s a tough, tough pill to swallow; but recruiting matters. It matters as much as development. Iowa might develop with the very best of them, but you’ll never break the ceiling of 7/8 regular season wins (beside once every decade) unless you find a way to recruit better than you have. 39th place....51st place...it’s all the same, equals 7/8 wins on the regular season schedule, with a weak non con lineup none the less.

Nebraska owns Iowa, save for the three years your favorite coach Mike Riley did his best to destroy the program.

Osborne owned Iowa. Solich owned Iowa. Hell, even Bo Pelini, as inept as he was still almost went undefeated all four years against Iowa. 3-1 should have been 4-0, but turnover Tommy Armstrong found a way to throw 4 interceptions that day despite the Hawkeyes going 0-11 on third down, and Iowa lucked out to win it.

Nebraska recruits better. Osborne consistently beat Iowa. Solich consistently beat Iowa. Pelini consistently beat Iowa. Wanna know why? Because they recruited better.

Riley sure his best to instill some confidence in the Hawkeye nation that they’ll never lose to Nebraska again, but Riley is gone. The first coach that didn’t own Iowa, is gone.

In comes Frost, with a true freshman QB and not a single draftable player, into Kinnick vs a Hawkeye team loaded with draft talent and it takes a walk off field goal to get it done.

Nebraska has always owned Iowa. They recruit better. That’s how it works. Now, Riley is long gone. Things will return to the way they were, before Riley. Where every coach prior owned Iowa. Osborne. Solich. Pelini. All owned Iowa.

Frost, who is by far and away the best recruiter of the bunch, will continue to do what every coach prior (besides Riley) has done to Iowa. Owned them. Tick tock, friends. That 4-8 team and the leftovers of the Riley era are in the rear view mirror. We have always recruited well at Nebraska, and have always owned Iowa...except for the Riley years. Now Frost will return to doing what every coach has ever done to Iowa. I will truly miss the bravado on this board, though. You guys and your ever optimistic off season Kirk-is-gonna-get-it-done-this-year, to the fire-Kirk-he-sucks when you ultimately win 7 or 8 regular season games, is so much fun to watch unfold.

Man I love this board.

It won’t be any more of a blow than O-Mart — and our record against Michigan is just as good as it is against Braska.

No worries here. We’ll get all the studs we need. Bollers just needs to figure out if he wants to be part of a solid player development, winning program — or a possible upstart with a history of underproducing in the trenches.
