College Hoops Today National Player of the Year

Iowa’s Luka Garza: Illinois’ Ayo Dosunmu was a close second for this award, but it ultimately goes to Garza. College basketball hasn’t had a player this decorated over a four-year career since Tyler Hansbrough was at North Carolina. The 6-11 big man has gotten better every season, as evidenced by his ability to shoot a blistering 45.5 percent from three-point range this year as a senior. Garza shot just 29.2 percent from long distance as a junior. He also has had nine games this season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

All Americans
First Team

Jared Butler, Baylor

*Current Stats (17.1 points, five assists, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals)

Ayo Dosunmu, Illinois

*Current Stats (21 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.1 steals)

Cade Cunningham, Oklahoma State

*Current Stats (19.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.4 steals)

Corey Kispert, Gonzaga

*Current Stats (19.5 points, 4.9 rebounds)

Luka Garza, Iowa

*Current Stats (23.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.6 blocks)

Second Team

Jalen Suggs, Gonzaga

*Current Stats (13.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, two steals)

Davion Mitchell, Baylor

*Current Stats (13.6 points, 5.6 assists, 2.7 rebounds, two steals)

Drew Timme, Gonzaga

*Current Stats (18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds)

Evan Mobley, USC

*Current Stats (16.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.8 blocks)

Hunter Dickinson, Michigan

*Current Stats (14.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks)

Third Team

Collin Gillespie, Villanova

*Current Stats (14 points, 4.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds)

James Bouknight, UConn

*Current Stats (20.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals)

Cam Thomas, LSU

*Current Stats (22.8 points, 3.4 rebounds)

Chris Duarte, Oregon

*Current Stats (17.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.9 steals)

Kofi Cockburn, Illinois

*Current Stats (17.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.3 blocks)

Cockburn is better than Dickinson.

What a name combo.

Just when I get comfortable poo pooing Gonzaga and convince myself they’re overrated...I see a list like this that shows them having 3 of the 10 best players in CBB.

Winning will do that. If Iowa had been ranked in the top five last March , Luka would have been NPOY last season.....

I just saw Gonzaga struggle with Loyola Marymount in 1st half---they definitely look beatable. Suggs is around 14ppg and 33% 3pt shooter...he is an NBA lottery pick on potential, but he is not All American based on performance. Kispert is a legit shooter. Timme reminds me of a thinner, younger version of Garza, with
better footspeed but not elite athlete. Ayaya is pretty tough.

They've been coasting against terrible competition. Will see if bad habits formed the last 2 months.

OK with most of those but in my eyes Cockburn had a better year than Dickinson.

Jalen Suggs is terrific, but is he really 1st team all American? Definitely an up year for big men and maybe a down year for point guards?

Jon Rothstein clearly knows his stuff. One of the best in the biz.

One of the very few 'talking heads' who hasn't gone out of his way to try to pimp Dosunmu as deserving the NPotY, ahead of Luka.

All this Cockburn vs Dickinson debate....... too much of a sausage fest. I'm out.

These NPOY awards for Garza feel more like the lifetime achievement awards in Music. And Rothenstein alluded to it in the article, “one of the most decorated players...”
